What can be made from oxygen cylinders. How to make a grill from a gas cylinder? Work order and photos of finished projects. Manufacturing and filling of the case

A large company arriving at the dacha needs a solid grill. Standard thin steel structures offered in stores are not suitable for this.

It is inconvenient to grill kebabs and steaks over a fire, placing them on bricks. Not everyone will decide to build a permanent barbecue structure with a stove and a roof.

Having thought about this, the home craftsman comes to the conclusion that the best option- make a barbecue with your own hands from a gas cylinder.

The thick walls of such a container will last for many years. Its dimensions are optimal for laying out skewers. It’s easy to choose the height to suit your height so that you don’t have to bend your back while cooking.

There are many varieties of braziers and smokers made from gas cylinders. Let's get to know them and talk about how you can bring your favorite option to life yourself.

It all starts with cutting the cylinder

Regardless of the design chosen, the first step in making a barbecue is cutting an old 50-liter propane cylinder. We do not recommend immediately rushing at him with an angle grinder. In this matter, you must follow safety rules. The remaining gas present in each container may explode if it comes into contact with sparks and air.

Therefore, you will first have to manually unscrew the tap. Removing a fitting on an old cylinder is not always a simple operation, since it is tightly “stuck” to the body. You can try to move it using an open-end wrench, hitting the handle with a hammer.

If the tap does not give in, then use another tool - an adjustable water wrench and steel pipe as a lever.

Under the influence of such a powerful force, any thread gives way. To prevent the container from rotating, a stop angle is attached to its bottom on the other side.

To make unscrewing easier, you can apply VeDeshka to the contact point between the tap and the body and wait a couple of hours until the thread loosens.

After this, the container is slowly filled with water. It displaces the flammable gas-air mixture, eliminating the risk of explosion when cutting.

After this, the water is not drained, but the tap is put back in place and they begin to mark the body.

On one side there is a long seam on the body of the cylinder. It will be a “beacon” for the first cutting line. The second line is drawn on the other side so that it is opposite the first and recedes 8 cm upward from it. This will be the second cutting line. If you do not make this adjustment, the roasting pan will turn out shallow.

Having made the markings according to the drawing, they take the grinder and cut through the walls, separating part of the body. It will be used as a hinged lid.

Important nuance! You need to cut the body carefully next to the seam so as not to damage the steel ring that is located under it. It will serve as a stop for the lid so that it does not fall into the fryer.

In the bottom photo you can see a ring on the left side of the container. If the master had passed the grinder next to the seam, it would have remained in place and served as a stop. It is not difficult to correct this mistake: you need to weld steel strips on top of the lid.

The next step is to remove the fitting. It is cut flush with the body.

Burrs are removed with a grinding wheel.

The further procedure depends on how you intend to use the grill: only for frying or combine it with a smokehouse. We will consider these operations after reviewing the finished structures.

Examples of barbecues made from gas cylinders

The easiest way to turn a gas container into a Dutch oven is to cut it in half, drill air holes in the sides and weld four legs to the bottom.

Divide the container in half and get two braziers

The most popular option among craftsmen is cutting out the side of the case and turning it into a door. It will help keep the coals at a high temperature longer during frying.

For ease of transportation, two legs should be equipped with wheels, and the third should be used as a stop. The handle for transportation can be made longer and a board for dishes and seasonings can be attached to it.

The best stand for a roasting pan is made from an old stand. sewing machine. It lowers the center of gravity of the structure, preventing it from tipping over.

Forged decor and side smoke exhaust pipe improve appearance and functionality of the barbecue.

By making a smoke umbrella over the brazier, two tables on the sides and placing it on bent steel legs, we get a more solid structure. There is no particular need for an additional canopy, however, its presence improves the appearance.

Our review continues with a homemade grill-smokehouse made from gas cylinders. It is a combination of two containers: 50 liter and 20 liter. The smaller one is placed below the main one, connected to it through a small window and used as a smoke generator. To improve traction chimney make it higher.

A more advanced option is to install a third vertical container. Products for cold smoking are hung in it. The total capacity of this design is sufficient to prepare meat and fish delicacies in reserve.

Occupying a place of honor on the site, the barbecue becomes the subject of general attention. Knowing this, many craftsmen decorate it according to their imagination.

The most popular option is the design in the form of a steam locomotive. The fire and smoke emanating from the brazier fit perfectly into this image.

The smoke generator can be placed transversely in the “driver’s compartment”, or it can be naturally integrated into the overall locomotive design.

The streamlined shape of the container suggests a submarine. Present to your attention interesting example implementation of such an idea.

For one master, the gas container reminded him of a submarine ship, while for another, the association with a pig came to mind. Implementing it in metal is not particularly difficult.

Having become acquainted with examples of folk “barbecue art,” let’s move on to considering the practical question of how to make a barbecue with your own hands from a gas cylinder and a smokehouse based on it.

Step-by-step instruction

We described the initial operations for marking and cutting the cylinder at the beginning of the article. Now let’s supplement our instructions with photographs and explain further steps.

It is more convenient to weld the hinges to the body of the fryer until the lid is separated by cutting a line on the back side of the body. In this case, they will fall into place without distortion. On the other side, a handle made of steel rod is welded to the lid.

If you don’t put a stop on the hinge side, the door will fall back when opening and it will be inconvenient to get it out. You can use a short piece of corner as a stop, welding it in the middle between the hinges.

Blower holes can be drilled, but it is easier to make them using a grinder in the form of vertical slits.

To install skewers, triangular cuts are made on the ribs of the fryer or holes are drilled in the body in increments of 5-7 cm.

Grill legs can be made in two ways:

  • “In a simple way” from pieces of fittings or pipes, welding them to the bottom;
  • By making a stand from profile pipes and a bent strip on which the cylinder will rest.

To speed up the frying process, the lid should be closed. In this case, to remove the smoke, you will have to make a hole at the end of the container and weld a pipe into it.

A barbecue-smokehouse differs from a regular brazier by the presence of a smoke generator compartment. For this purpose, a 20 liter cylinder is most often used. Having marked a hole for the passage of smoke, it is cut out with a grinder.

The same operation is performed with a large container. After this, they are joined by welding. A large balloon is placed on legs.

Having drawn the contours of the lids, they are cut out from the bodies and placed on the hinges. At the end of a large container, make a hole for the chimney and weld it.

Inside the cylinders, shelves are made from corners and gratings made of thick wire are placed on them. Holes are drilled in the back of the smoke generator housing and a rotary damper is installed to adjust the draft. A similar valve is mounted on the pipe.

Experts strongly advise installing a temperature sensor on the body of the main camera (the upper limit of measurement is +350 C). It will help you accurately control the smoking process and obtain products of excellent quality.

The work is completed by painting the structure with a heat-resistant compound.

If you have a gas-cylinder pneumatic gun, then there are probably a lot of empty cans. The author of the article suggests not throwing them away, but making a durable case for the flash drive.

Attention!!! Before cutting the canister, make sure that there is no gas left in it! The canister is under high pressure and disassembling it can lead to the canister exploding!

So it's in our hands empty a can (or better yet, two) imported from under carbon dioxide(CO?). You can also use domestic cylinders - their wall thickness is even a little thicker (although these are quite thick), but, unfortunately, they are shorter, so long flash drives run the risk of not fitting into them.

Next, we need to cut the can into two parts, of which one will become the body, and the second will become the lid. Although I personally didn’t like the option of a lid in the form of a standard neck, so the lid was made from the semicircular bottom of the second cylinder. I draw your attention to the need for a very precise cut perpendicular to the axis! Even minor errors can lead to the fact that when connecting the body and the cap, the wall will acquire a quite noticeable “break”. Naturally, the ends of the sawn parts must be sanded evenly with sandpaper on a flat surface, for example, glass. In principle, we can end here - the flash drive will turn out to be laconic and brutal, but I decided to slightly embellish the body and made three oblique cuts on both sides using two folded together, hacksaw blades. After which I again leveled the cuts with a file and “sandpaper” (but not very fine - we will benefit from micro-scratches on the walls of the slot) wrapped around a plastic card.

Naturally, it was impossible to just leave holes in the case, so I started thinking about how to cover them. After trying several solutions, I came up with a rather tricky option. To do this, buy a ruler of the desired color from an office supply store - I chose UV-active (fluorescent) orange as it goes well with brushed metal. It is also necessary to check that the thickness of the plastic approximately matches the thickness of the slot, or rather slightly exceeds it.

A small piece of colored plastic is cut out of a ruler so that it can be inserted into this slot with a margin of length and height. Just in case, I remind you that its thickness should be slightly larger than the slot and not fit into it. The end is ground to a semicircular profile - to fit tightly to the “bottom” of the slots.

We will need dichloroethane, which is widely known to modders who love to work with plexiglass, and is usually sold on radio markets. Using a brush or cotton swab, you need to quickly and generously moisten the side surfaces and the end of a piece of the ruler, wait a few seconds until the dichloroethane softens the surface of the plastic and forcefully insert it into the slot until it stops (you can help yourself with a hammer). Check that there are no gaps anywhere.

Now we put this aside and go have tea (not forgetting wash your hands well after dichloroethane). We need to wait until the dichloroethane has completely evaporated and the plastic has regained its original hardness - do not touch it for at least a few hours, otherwise you risk loosening the tight fit. When everything is dry, you can cut off the excess plastic from the outside, being careful not to touch the metal, and sand it flush with the body.

You can also sand the plastic flush with the metal body from the inside, although this is not necessary. Perhaps without this operation the plastic will even stay more securely in the groove, but most likely this will slightly interfere with the installation of the flash drive board.

The plastic adhered surprisingly well and was not going to fly out, despite its small thickness. Since the technology turned out to be successful, I did the same with all the other slots, naturally this time “in bulk.” Of course, after this the body was finally sanded.

Next, it was necessary to think over the technology for mounting the flash drive board in its new case. To do this, three washers were cut from the same ruler to fit the inner diameter of the case, after which slots were made in them for the flash drive connector. Two of them will be glued together and will firmly hold the board in the case, and the third will become a counterpart in the cover.

After this, the question of organizing the lighting arose. It was a sin not to take advantage of the UV activity property of the plastic, and therefore a 3 mm ultraviolet LED was chosen for the role of illumination. When you try to connect it directly instead of the standard one LED indicator on the board, it turned out that there was not enough power for it and it barely glowed. The only power source remains 5 volts from the USB connector, but in this case we will lose the read/write indication function.

Memories of the basics of electrical engineering suggested a solution in the form of a transistor. The first element that came across was found on an old board from hard drive and soldered out from there, I admit - I didn’t make any selection according to the parameters and didn’t even see the markings, but surprisingly the circuit worked! In short, the power is directly taken from those same 5 volts through a resistor, and the “ground” is connected to the transistor, and it appears precisely when the transistor detects the voltage at the contacts of the LED indicator. A simple diagram is attached.

The barbecue is often used in dacha areas, representing a rather popular design. Often, craftsmen make real works of art with their own hands instead of a simple metal box. As a rule, the material used is old junk car receivers, fireproof safes, industrial pipes, etc. Of the considerable variety of various solutions, it is considered the simplest and most affordable to make a barbecue from a gas cylinder with your own hands. The original blank can be found either at a scrap metal collection point or in your shed or garage. So how and in what sequence can you implement such a design yourself, and are there any disadvantages to such a popular solution?

Advantages and disadvantages of using an old cylinder

Choosing a material for a barbecue is easy: the best solution will become a 50-liter cylinder, because the length and width of the container will be 85 and 30 centimeters, respectively, which will be simply ideal for cooking. Of course, you can also use 40-liter containers, but in this case the coverage will be much less, therefore, cooking will not be as comfortable!

The main advantage of the gas cylinder body is high quality metal used. Needless to say, when producing cylinders for subsequent storage of gas under pressure, manufacturers place serious demands on the material, which results in a considerable 3-mm thickness of the casing walls. Thanks to this, when using a gas cylinder, you can count on an inexpensive but high-quality barbecue container.

Main advantages:

  • Ease of use . After cooking, there is no need to sweep the ashes from the dacha area and pour water on the fire - just turn off the draft and you can move on to the meal;

  • Durability . Steel grades 30 KhGSA, D and 45, in addition to the large thickness and reliability of the structure as a whole, will offer excellent resistance to negative factors, thanks to which the grill can last more than 10-15 years without corroding or burning out;
  • Versatility . Under closed or open lid you can bake, smoke and fry any food and product;

  • Mobility . Even if the grill made from a gas cylinder is not equipped with wheels, the dimensions of the structure allow you to easily move it to any convenient place or simply change direction from the wind.

But, like any product, using a gas cylinder to create a barbecue with your own hands also has some disadvantages, namely:

  • High-quality heat-resistant paint compositions cost a lot of money, and therefore, most likely, over time, the finished structure will take on a less than favorable appearance, resembling a faded photo. Remember that with outside a barbecue made from a cylinder burns out quite quickly, so you can’t count on an attractive appearance;

  • In a cylindrical container, it is problematic to achieve uniform heating, as a result, for example, when cooking shish kebab, the edges of the meat for a long time will remain moist while the middle begins to burn;
  • If you want to cook meat in the cold season, you will have to prepare a lot of coals, firewood and patience in advance - the low heat capacity of the metal affects the rapid cooling of the container, which makes the fryer much more voracious;

  • And the most important drawback: even very old and not used for a long time gas cylinder can store remaining explosive substances, so use it as a grill for cooking with extreme caution, taking the necessary precautions in advance!

How to cut a balloon correctly?

Almost always, some portion of liquid hydrocarbons, called gasoline, remains inside the metal container. The danger is that if this substance remains, the liquid can instantly evaporate, increasing the risk of rupture of the cylinder. Therefore, before cutting metal, it is necessary to remove gasoline and other gases from the internal container, and also to prevent oxygen from penetrating from the inside to the cut site!

All of the above is done as follows:

  1. Using an impact load and an open-end wrench, unscrew the valve, thereby allowing the remaining propane to ventilate out.
  2. Fill the gas cylinder with water and leave it in this position for a couple of days. During this time, water will dissolve liquid hydrocarbons. If desired, you can use soapy water.
  3. Pour out the water, then refill the container. Firmly seal the hole with some kind of sealant, then start cutting the metal according to the diagram.

An opened cylinder should only be left outside, away from sources of fire and children, or in a well-ventilated area!

From the experience of many craftsmen, we can say that not everyone can unscrew the valve the first time, since over many years it “sticks” firmly. Of course, you can use a sledgehammer, but that, as a rule, does not always help. There is a simpler, although requiring more patience, method of filling the cylinder with water: unscrew only the tap-axle, below which there is an 8-mm hole. Calmly fill the container with water through it using a dropper, then cut the container.

While cutting, water will flow out - continue sawing the metal as usual. Since the smell of gasoline can hardly be called pleasant, it is recommended to do the work yourself away from residential buildings in open areas. For the same reason, it is worth taking care of a respirator with gas protection! The resulting parts cannot be immediately used to assemble the barbecue; you must first calcinate the components over a fire in order to get rid of the dirt accumulated inside.

Assembling a barbecue with your own hands: complex and simple design

The simplest model is considered to be a barbecue made from half a gas cylinder, which will be placed on any support assembled from scrap materials, be it stones, bricks or just a mound of earth. The time spent will be minimal, but working with such a barbecue afterwards will not be very convenient! Besides, you don’t want to brag to your friends or neighbors either. Having at least some welding skills, you can create an interesting and unique barbecue with your own hands.

Container with lid or barbecue roaster

You can add more functionality to the design of the barbecue thanks to the second half of the cylinder, which can be used as a lid. An air supply system will also be useful, because natural draft in the form of wind often, in addition to uneven draft, creates a lot of additional trouble for the griller.

Work order:

  • Mark the half of the cylinder so that the side parts remained larger– in the future this will prevent the wind from fanning the coals.
  • Make a horizontal cut using electric jigsaw or Bulgarian. Don't forget about safety precautions, which we wrote about above !
  • Immediately weld a couple of hinges, then you can cut out the lid completely.

  • Burn the surface, first covering it with wood chips. If desired, you can use .
  • To avoid a situation where the metal “leads away,” weld a corner measuring 32 by 32 around the perimeter of the cut. Subsequently, it will serve as a support for the skewers.
  • Weld one metal strip in the center or two on the sides to secure the lid.

  • Make a support for the barbecue: for this you can use a steel strip 1 meter long, a corner and a 4-meter profile pipe with a diameter of 15 millimeters.

  • For greater convenience when cooking, it makes sense to weld a small stop between the hinges, which will allow you to hold the lid in the open position. A simple steel strip, slightly curved in the direction opposite the barbecue, will do.
  • On one side, make cuts to place skewers, on the opposite side, drill small holes for them. An 11mm drill will be enough; cuts and holes should be made at the same level!

  • Make holes at the bottom of the container for draft. An 8mm drill bit will be sufficient.
  • For a convenient side from you, weld the handle to the lid, also do not forget about the side handles for possible transfer of the barbecue.
  • Place the structure on the frame, treat the surfaces with a primer and heat-resistant paint.

If necessary, a gas cylinder grill can always be supplemented with a canopy, shelves and other elements. In addition, ideal draft will be ensured if an exhaust pipe is additionally welded to the structure.

Barbecue smokehouse made from a pair of cylinders

Having gotten your hands on making one barbecue, you can make your own “two-in-one” type roaster, which will not only allow you to conveniently fry any food, but also smoke them at your own pleasure.

The following tools and materials will be needed:

  • A piece of pipe about a meter high and about 100-150 millimeters in diameter;
  • A pair of gas cylinders with a volume of 27 and 50 liters;
  • Pipe elbow;
  • Electrodes and welding machine(we also recommend getting a “chameleon” mask);
  • Rods for the frame made of reinforcement or corners made of metal (legs from some old equipment, for example, a sewing machine, will also work);

Similar to the previously described technology remove residual gasoline and propane from the cylinder! Even before starting work on assembling the barbecue from a gas tank, thoroughly clean all surfaces from accumulated dirt and rust. Cut and shape each container the way you want the BBQ roaster to look.

The main difference between the first option and the second is that in the second, a smaller container, acting as a gas generator, will have a small hole in the upper part of the body for fixing a cylinder with a capacity of 50 liters - a hot smoking chamber.

In addition to the above, below working chamber You should place a corner with small holes, which will play the role of a smoke dissipator. The draft in the barbecue smokehouse can be changed using an exhaust pipe with dampers and a blower in the gas generator. To avoid burnout, a smaller container should be placed in the lower part of the cylinder. grate.

This must be done in the following sequence:

  1. At the bottom of the gas generator container, cut a square hole for the blower.
  2. On the opposite side, place a screen with a sliding flap, as in the photo below.
  3. Weld corners for the grate on the sides, and a smoke-cutting corner at the bottom.
  4. Based on the dimensions of the exhaust pipe, cut a hole at the top of the larger container.
  5. All gas cylinders need to have their side sections cut out, with the smaller one at the top and the lower one at the bottom. The holes must be equal in both cases - this is very important!
  6. Connect the containers at the cutouts, then seal them together.
  7. Make a hood, aligning it with the damper.

At the end, all that remains is to place the barbecue-smokehouse on the frame, having previously leveled the position according to the level, and secure the structure with a weld.

Video instruction

Having assembled a barbecue from a gas cylinder with their own hands and tested the design in operation, craftsmen often begin to share their experience, tips and recommendations on what changes can be made for greater comfort and effect. Below is a selection of proven advice from experts who have tested each statement in practice:

  • Temperature is one of the key factors during smoking and cooking, so it makes sense to equip the working compartments of the smokehouse thermometer;

  • You can avoid heat leaks by achieving uniform distribution of heat by welding an additional steel plate at the joints of the body and cover;
  • The bottom of a smokehouse or barbecue can be easily strengthened using reinforcing rods by welding them to the structure. It is important to note that the distance between food and coals in this case was at least 14-18 centimeters;

  • Of course, you can always buy a grill grate in a store, but it’s much nicer to finish the job and make it yourself. A suitable material would be, for example, a two-shelf shelf from a non-working refrigerator, welded crosswise;
  • Do not forget to regularly clean the chambers with a metal stick, dragging coals from the far chamber into the near compartment, and then pouring them into a bucket through the ash pit;
  • When fat gets on the coals, it causes an unpleasant bitter taste, which becomes noticeable even after consuming the food. To avoid this, you should place a tray under the food during cooking;

  • Practice shows that a barbecue made from a gas cylinder usually turns out to be quite heavy, especially when it comes to a double structure. In this regard, it makes sense to install a pair of wheels in advance for ease of movement.

And the last piece of advice: many craftsmen recommend immediately installing another additional chamber during work - for cold smoking. For this you will also need a gas cylinder with a capacity of 50 liters. The container will be placed vertically, and not horizontally as in the first case! The installation procedure is identical to the method described above, but installation of the chimney is much easier.

Most likely, making a barbecue with your own hands from a gas cylinder, as in the photo, will not be as easy as it initially seems. Nevertheless, the invested effort and expense will easily pay off, allowing you to enjoy spending time outdoors with the whole family every weekend. In addition, buying a ready-made barbecue will not be cheap: the cost of a model with identical capabilities today starts at 15 thousand rubles, and, as a rule, the purchased devices offer thin-walled metal as a material. Thus, you should not immediately discount the choice in favor of DIY assembly.

To make a barbecue from a gas cylinder, you first need to understand the device. For cooking kebabs, fish or vegetables on open fire are used different devices: barbecue, grill, tandoor, etc. Barbecue is in many ways similar to these devices. However, it is more similar to a grill. It’s easier to make a barbecue with your own hands, since it is not equipped with a lid and requires the use of skewers for cooking. A mobile barbecue and grill are made according to very similar schemes. Both designs are equipped with a grille and often have a lid.

A high-quality barbecue and similar devices are quite expensive. If you make a barbecue from a cylinder with your own hands, the cost of construction will be lower. As a result, you won't have to spend a large sum. Other advantages of this solution:

  • significant length (about 120 cm), which allows you to cook in one go a large number of products;
  • relatively simple installation process;
  • a minimum of materials used, since the barbecue is made from a propane cylinder;
  • the basis of the structure is heat-resistant metal (3 mm thick wall);
  • the presence of a lid protects food and fire from precipitation; in addition, it can be used to regulate the flame.

However, there are also disadvantages. For example, the volume of the cylinder is quite large, which makes it difficult to use in a small yard. Another disadvantage is the significant weight. It is difficult to move such a barbecue. This work is best done together. Propane cylinders are distinguished by their considerable length and wall thickness.

Another disadvantage is the unattractive appearance. It is not recommended to paint the structure, since it is constantly exposed to high temperatures, but if desired, you can choose Decoration Materials with suitable properties. They also note the impossibility of using firewood. The whole point is that a barbecue made from a gas cylinder is not high enough. Considering that the free space is also limited by the grate, it is not possible to put firewood inside.

Tools and materials

To get an idea of the structure of the barbecue, it is recommended to look at the photo/video. First you need to prepare tools and materials:

First, you need to draw up drawings or sketches, which will indicate the overall and auxiliary dimensions, as well as information about the characteristics of the finished product. Based on the developed documents, the type of support is determined: brick or metal legs. In accordance with this, it is prepared additional material(corner, pipe). If you are making a barbecue from a gas cylinder with your own hands, first initial stage determine the method of opening the lid. For convenience, a metal handle is used.

Preparing for work

Tip: Before you start cutting, you should make sure that there is no gas inside, otherwise the likelihood of an explosion increases.

Vapors of a gaseous substance may remain in the cylinder. To make sure that the container is empty, it is filled with water. If it is necessary to release gas and its vapors, follow the instructions:

  1. The container is turned upside down, then the valve is opened and it is completely emptied.
  2. Condensation remains inside. To remove it, the outlet of the balloon is lubricated with soap. Thanks to this, the process of condensate release will proceed more clearly: the liquid foams, and splashes appear under pressure.
  3. The structure must be freed from gas residues, for which water is poured inside. How to do this safely if there is still a valve installed at the inlet? You need to lay it on its side. Further work should be carried out together with an assistant. So, one person saws off a valve with a hacksaw, another pours water over the cut area, which helps cool the metal. As a result, the risk of sparks and ignition of residual gas is reduced.
  4. Now it is possible to pour water inside. This is done using a hose; it is also possible to use a funnel.
  5. At the initial stage of filling, it is recommended to shake the container, which will allow you to wash its inner walls, removing any remaining condensation.
  6. After filling the container with water, it is recommended to leave it for several days.
  7. The liquid is drained, and this should be done as far as possible from residential buildings due to the unpleasant odor.

If you plan to make a barbecue from a gas cylinder with your own hands, you can consider using a hammer. Use it to knock down the valve. However, this method is more dangerous. Due to the significant impact force, more sparks may occur. It is unlikely that it will be possible to eliminate their appearance by spraying metal.

Cylinder cutting

When the water has been removed from the container, you can proceed to the main stage - making a barbecue. To do this, remove rust from the gas cylinder, if any. Then they move on to cutting. If the hole layout is already ready, cut the metal with a grinder. To protect the flame from the wind in the future, it is better to leave the side rings. The cut should be as close to the weld as possible. Dimensions as in the drawing below.

To make straight cuts, you must first mark them. If you need to get an open one, just cut it in half. In this case, the cut will also take place along the side rings. To make a barbecue from a gas cylinder with your own hands, you need to study the drawings, photos and videos of the entire process before starting work, because such a design is somewhat more complicated due to the configuration of the hole.

All step by step instructions The work can be seen on video.

You should be guided by the parameters: horizontal lines run along the center of the cylinder, along; vertical - parallel to the side rings at some distance from them (10–20 cm). Working with a grinder, move from the center of the cylinder to its edges. Considering that the length of the product is significant, the grinder disc may burn out. To avoid this, it is recommended to not cut the metal completely in some places. In these areas, the walls are removed with a chisel. To create the possibility of blowing the flame, holes (up to 10 pcs.) are drilled at the bottom and in the side rings.

Attaching the support

The barbecue is characterized by a round base, so you need to think about where the structure will be located. If you make a support from brick or stone, you will get a stationary product that cannot be moved when necessary. The preferred option is metal legs; they can be made from pipes or corners. If there is an unnecessary metal thing, for example, a support from an old sewing machine, it is used to install a barbecue.

There are two ways to attach the base to the bottom of the structure:

Or you can use legs from an old sewing machine.

The height of the legs can be any. It all depends on personal preference. You need to be guided by convenience. Legs that are too low will not allow you to stand level at the barbecue; you will have to constantly bend over. It is better to focus on the average height of adult family members. At the same time, we must not forget that the cylinder is characterized by a significant height.

Welding hinges, lids, handles

Having secured the grill to a solid base, proceed to the next stage. To avoid the hassle of opening a hot lid, it is recommended to weld it to the bottom of the structure. If it is not removable, use loops. They are welded or secured with bolts and nuts. Rivets - not too much suitable option, because they can withstand average temperatures and can melt when exposed to an open flame.

If you place the hinges in one direction, the cover can be removed in the future if desired. By welding them in the opposite direction, they act differently:

  • the hinges are fastened on one side;
  • then put on the lid;
  • install the hinges on the lid on the other side and begin to weld it to the barbecue.

In this case, the structure will not be dismountable. To freely use the barbecue grill, attach the handle. It is located in the center of the metal cover. This element can be welded, which is more reliable, or connected using standard fasteners. The second option involves drilling two holes on the lid. The handle is installed here. It is desirable that it be made of metal. Wooden elements They will quickly burn out and may rot, since the finished product will be constantly exposed to the open air.

If the structure is used only as a barbecue, you can also weld a grate. It is usually located directly above the rounded bottom. The structure can also be used as a barbecue, in which case it is better not to attach the grill. A store-bought barbecue with a handle is installed on the ribs of the former cylinder. In this position, closing the lid will be difficult due to the protruding elements of the large grille. It is also made removable, but then you need to weld the corners near the edges. A grate is placed on their lower shelves.

Well, and a video of all the work done.

You can even try to make everything in the form of a steam locomotive, as in the photo below.

To avoid the lid from completely swinging open, you can weld metal rod or chain. Due to this, this element is limited in movement. It is allowed to paint the barbecue, but it is better to do it outside. The inside still remains hidden from view. Use paints that are resistant to high temperatures. They must withstand up to 800?C. It is recommended to apply paint only after the surface has been coated with a special primer.

But really, what can you make from a gas cylinder with your own hands? This has been the case since the days Soviet Union that many products can be fundamentally recycled and new designs can be obtained from them that will perform completely different functions. As it turns out, you can do a lot from a gas cylinder and, mind you, everything will be done with your own hands.

Stove from a cylinder

The first thing that comes to mind when looking for an answer to the question of what you can make from a gas cylinder with your own hands is a potbelly stove. Such a unit has many advantages, as well as the installation principle itself. Firstly, the thickness of the walls of the gas cylinder is 3 mm and this is quite enough to prevent a potbelly stove from burning out already in the first season of operation. Secondly, you will have to modify the gas cylinder quite a bit - the stove is made in one day with your own hands. The third advantage is huge selection designs: you can make a stove from one cylinder or from two, vertical design or horizontal. Use your own imagination or tips from the Internet - and you can make a product out of a gas cylinder that will help you out in the cold winter.

There are also disadvantages. Or rather, these are not even shortcomings, but features that must be taken into account so that they do not turn into shortcomings. For example, before burning wood for the first time, it is necessary to remove the paint from the outside of the parts from the cylinder. Otherwise, the paint will begin to fade and fill the room with acrid smoke. It is also MANDATORY to take care of fire safety. The walls of a stove made from a gas cylinder can become red hot and this is fraught with many troubles. It may seem to you that such heating is only a plus, because it will be warm inside the room. But anything that can flare up from such strong heating will certainly flare up if it is too close to the potbelly stove. And you need to take care of the walls of the room itself: our workshop’s cinder block wall cracked vertically along its entire height after just a few evenings of use. What can be done to protect the wall: install the stove at a distance from it, protect it with a galvanized screen mounted on the wall at a short distance from it, or heat the potbelly stove in moderation. The latter, by the way, is not the best - it will be difficult to “guess” the optimal amount of firewood. And most importantly: a stove made from a gas cylinder with your own hands (or even someone else’s) will cool down very quickly. As long as the fire is burning inside, as long as firewood is being added, it will be warm. But as soon as the wood burns out, the stove instantly cools down. Insulated walls of the room where such a potbelly stove will be used will help, as will the elimination of even minimal cracks in the area of the windows, doors or gates of the room.

Feeders for animals and birds

This is another option that you can make from a gas cylinder with your own hands and still get excellent quality. Such feeders seem to be, if not eternal, then 100% durable. The gas cylinder is cut along its axis and you get two halves, each of which will become an excellent feeder for pigs, sheep or a waterer for poultry. All that remains is to weld the stand, since the lower part of each of the halves will be semicircular and, of course, will not stand on the ground. You can also cut off the top and bottom of the cylinder along the line of the backing rings and get small round feeders. They are suitable for small animals and provided that we are talking about one or two individuals. Or maybe it will be drinking bowls for chickens - it's up to you.

Here you also need to take into account some features so as not to be upset later. Since food will be poured inside such feeders, you should especially carefully clean the inside of gasoline. If the cylinder has been refilled multiple times and has not been cleaned, gasoline will accumulate inside and have a very strong odor. A strong smell plus oiliness over the entire surface - this must be removed so as not to poison poultry and animals. How to do it yourself: a set of actions helps, including washing in boiling water using various cleaning agents, burning with a blowtorch and cleaning using attachments on a drill or angle grinder.

Manual roller for compaction

And also from a gas cylinder, and also with your own hands. A roller is a rarely used thing, but if you really need it, it’s difficult to find. Compact the asphalt surface if you have to do it yourself and don’t have to rely on a roller; tamping the base under paving slabs, soil compaction – there can be many situations. The main thing is that making a manual roller from a gas cylinder with your own hands is even easier than the previous crafts that we mentioned above. A U-shaped pipe with a diameter of about an inch, the ends of which will be attached to the center of the upper and lower parts of the cylinder by means of bearings and a handle of a shape and length convenient for your hands - that’s the whole structure. Water or sand is used as filler. Water is lighter, sand is heavier, so the choice depends on the purpose of the skating rink.

The main thing is safety. Since parts will be welded to the gas cylinder, you should take care to clean it from gasoline to prevent troubles. At the end of the article we will talk about this in more detail.

Other crafts from balloons

If you thought that a stove, a feeder and a roller are the entire list of what you can make from a gas cylinder with your own hands, then you are mistaken. There is no limit to ingenuity: various containers for storing something, a smokehouse, a barbecue, a feed cutter, an autoclave, a compressor and even a boiler - that’s relatively full list crafts. Another thing is that some of these designs are not always justified and it will be easier to purchase (purchase) a ready-made unit for safety reasons. If the master knows what he is doing with his own hands and it is so safe for use, then the issue is removed. But if you don’t have enough intelligence, then you can either kill yourself or your loved ones. We don’t want to offend anyone, but cases are different.

How to disassemble a gas cylinder

We promised above that we will teach you how to disassemble the cylinder safely and we keep our word. First of all, don’t think that everything is so simple and safe - if you act incorrectly, you can get burned in the literal and figurative sense of the word. Let's give an example from our youth. This is precisely the period when there was little experience, there was no Internet, but there was a burning desire to use the gas cylinder for other purposes. Logic dictated that we should be wary of even that small amount of gasoline inside, but we didn’t want to get too dirty. Therefore, having knocked down the valve with a sledgehammer, we began to fill the container with water, shake it off and drain the liquid. After repeating this five times, we decided that there was no longer a threat. Using a grinder, we started sawing the cylinder along the axis and were already 90% done with the work. And only then (!) the remains of the gasoline flared up and the master was engulfed in a cloud of flame. Nothing terrible - just burnt eyebrows and hair all over the exposed body - but it’s unpleasant.

The instructions will help you disassemble the cylinder (cut it) without consequences:

  • Even if you are sure that the cylinder is empty, you must open the valve. By venting even that small amount of gas, you will once again protect yourself.
  • The valve must be removed. Here everyone tries according to their capabilities and imagination. Some knock it down with a sledgehammer, others cut it off with a grinder or a hand hacksaw, and still others twist it out. The last option is the safest, but difficult to do at home. Clamping the cylinder so that it does not rotate under the force of the key is difficult. If you use a hand saw to cut the valve at the very base of the cylinder, ONLY! No cutters or angle grinders!
  • The hole that appeared after removing the valve is small in diameter, but it is enough to pour water inside. Why is this necessary? The water will displace the remaining gas and nothing will flare up when cutting. Here there is a slight difficulty, or rather inconvenience: you need to cut the bottle with water inside and water will definitely flow out of the resulting cut. There is nothing you can do about it - this is a feature that you need to be able to adapt to. For example, the area where you will be working with your hands should be such that spilled water does not collect and you will not have to kick the dirt with your feet. Naturally, this operation should take place outdoors and not indoors.
  • If an abundance of water cannot be avoided, then you can risk rinsing the cylinder several times, washing off the remaining gasoline. Just note: we specifically wrote the word “risk”, since we cannot give guarantees of safety. in our case, as you remember, there was almost no gasoline, but it flared up at the end of the cutting.
  • Cutting with a grinder is the most in a fast way. Mark the line with a marker (the pencil graphite will quickly fly off the surface due to vibration) and start cutting. Since the gas cylinder is round, it is better to place something under it on the sides so that it does not roll during operation.
  • Cleaning the internal surface is necessary even if the cylinder structure will not be used for poultry or animal feed. The smell is strong and persistent, so you need to remove it. To begin with, you can wash it with boiling water using various types of cleaning products. This will help partially, so burning follows. Blowtorch or fire – decide for yourself. Both options will help 100% and all you have to do is complete the cleaning with a metal brush. It is better to use the appropriate attachment on a drill or grinder to make things go faster.

Instead of a conclusion

As you can see, the question “what can you make from a gas cylinder with your own hands” has many possible answers. The main thing is your safety, because you are going to work with your own hands, which means you are risking them. Any design you make from a cylinder will serve you for a long time. Reason: high quality steel, which is rare now. But we also advise you to think through everything thoroughly - is it worth doing the thing yourself if the store-bought option is more reliable. For example, we would not risk working homemade compressor from a cylinder or a boiler - life is more expensive.
