Decoupage of candles: master class. Decoupage of candles: ideas and master classes New Year's candles in decoupage style

Decoupage candles is a great way to transform even such an ordinary piece of furniture.

The resulting masterpiece can be given to a friend or left at home to please yourself and your household. Your efforts will be rewarded with a completely unique home accessory.

Every year new ideas for decoupage appear. In this article we will present MK (master classes) on decoupage.

Choosing a candle and design

White candles of sufficient thickness are best suited for decoupage. They are generally easier to work with. Give preference to those specimens that have a dense top layer. This will reduce the likelihood of the paper stencil catching fire. Watch the video at the end of the article, it will teach you how to perform this technique correctly. Of course, you can use other stencils, but their decoupage has its own characteristics and difficult moments.

If you decide to decoupage thin candles, then it is better to use designs with small black and white elements.

Advice! These candles are not suitable for frequent use. Rather, they will perform only a decorative function. This is due to the fact that they warm up too well when ignited. It's not completely fireproof.

Having chosen the desired base, you should decide on the pattern. Many specialized stores sell special types of napkins with a ready-made pattern. Although this method of decoration allows the use of ordinary napkins. Using the decoupage technique, you can make fabulous candles for any holiday, including New Year. Below are detailed instructions on how to make decoupage yourself, as well as a video for it at the end of the article.

Types of decoupage techniques

On the Internet you can find a large amount of video material on how to make such candles, but first we will provide step-by-step instructions and consider each technique step by step. Looking ahead, let's say that you don't need to use glue at all for each of these decoupage styles.

"Cold" decoupage

This technique can be used to transform thin-walled candles. In this case, the pattern will fit almost perfectly to the surface. This type of decoupage is suitable even for beginners. Below is MK.

To decorate using decoupage technique you will need the following materials:

  • candle;
  • napkin;
  • sharp scissors (can be manicure scissors);
  • stick (preferably glass, but you can use any stick with a smooth surface).

First, measure the length of the napkin. Leave a small allowance (about one centimeter in length and width). Attach the design to the candle and align it along the top edge. Iron gently. This is best done with a glass rod, moving carefully from the center. Press the tool lightly for better adhesion to the napkin.

If you glued the design to the entire surface of the candle, then the resulting seam must be carefully processed. First glue one side of the picture, then the other, after cutting off the extra piece (if there was one, of course).

Advice! Avoid overlapping the seam, otherwise the final result will look sloppy.

Finish the top and bottom edges. If you had any extra paper, carefully trim it off. The design will stick to the candle even without using glue.

Apply decorative elements on top, for example, glitter, depending on your idea. And you will get a small masterpiece, as in the photo. If you still do not understand the details of decoupage, then watch the detailed video at the end of the text.

In this type of creativity you can use a variety of motifs.

Hot decoupage

Decoupage in this style is easy to do using a regular spoon. To do this you will need the following materials:

  • candle;
  • candle-tablet;
  • napkin;
  • small spoon;
  • sponge or regular bandage.
  • Advice! Do not overdo it with a spoon, otherwise you may end up with sloppy stripes in your design.

Let's start our MK. Cut out the design you like using scissors, leaving no room for seams. Separate the two remaining bottom layers of the napkin.

Take a teaspoon and hold the inside of it over the “tablet” for about a minute (see photo).

Advice! Be sure to warm up the spoon, otherwise you may stain the drawing with soot.

Holding the design at the edge, smooth it with the back of a spoon, moving from the center. Repeat the procedure of warming up the spoon from time to time.

As a result, the pattern should become almost transparent and be absorbed into the candle itself, as in the photo.

Next, we proceed to smooth out the stripes and irregularities on the candle. To do this, take a bandage and use it to rub our masterpiece until it shines. You can use a fresh new sponge. You will need both parts of it: smooth out any unevenness with the rough side, and polish it with the soft side.

Decoupage with hairdryer

Decoupage can also be done using a regular hairdryer. For this you will need:

  1. candle;
  2. napkin;
  3. scissors;

Having prepared the necessary tools, we proceed directly to decoupage. First, take a napkin, preferably two or three layers. Cut out the design.

Try on and straighten the design on the product and trim off the excess. Turn on the hairdryer to its highest setting. After attaching the design to the candle, direct a stream of air from a hairdryer onto it. Continue until the design is firmly adhered. You will get such a wonderful decorative item, as in the photo.

Acrylic paints in black and white candle decor

You can paint a pattern with acrylic paint to further decorate the candle. If this is required, of course. If you don’t like rhinestones and beads, decorating with coffee beans (as in the photo) can be a great idea for additional decoration of the product.

In mid-May, the Diocesan Cyril and Methodius Readings 2014 took place within the walls of our preschool institution. Teachers, heads of educational institutions in the city of Volzhsky and the city of Volgograd, and clergy of our city took part in the readings. I took part in the readings and held them with colleagues Master Class"Decoupage on candles". I would like to present you with a photo report from my master class. Decoupage(French decouper - cut) - a technique for decorating various objects, based on attaching a drawing, painting or ornament (regular cut) to the object, and, further, coating the resulting composition with varnish for the sake of effectiveness, safety and durability.

Decoupage on a candle looks great even if you have the most ordinary household items candle, although, of course, it is preferable to take good wax thicker candles, preferably light colors, just against a dark background the drawing will seem faded. On a thick one decoupage candle it looks more advantageous, and it’s much more convenient to work with it; you don’t need to look for very small drawings.

Decoupage on candles usually done using special glue for decoupage candles, also, there are special markers and outlines with which you can additionally draw on some elements.

And if I want to decorate a candle, but there is no special glue? This is where the so-called budget option comes in handy when decoupage can be done using a hot spoon.

To work you will need the following items:

Candle

Three-layer colored napkins

Pencil

Additional candle for heating a spoon

Choose your favorite motif from a napkin and try it on candle.

Then we separate the top colored layer from the napkin.

We attach a fragment to candle and smooth it with a pencil, starting from the center, paying special attention to the joints.

Let's light an extra one candle or a burner and heat the spoon, convex side up.

When the spoon is hot, proceed to the next step. Using a hot spoon, begin to slowly move over the design, as if smoothing it with an iron on an ironing board. The paraffin under the napkin will begin to melt, and the napkin will stick to candle.

Very important: Make sure all edges of the design are glued to candle.

In order to the candle became smooth, smooth out all the irregularities with a dish sponge, first with the hard side, then with the soft side.

The candle is ready.

It's so easy and simple to do decoupage candles. All participants successfully completed the task and were happy to receive candles decorated with your own hands. My many teachers master- the class inspired creativity.

Thank you for watching.

The technique is very popular among modern needlewomen. In it they embody the most original ideas for decorating boring household items. With its help you can create a unique gift, a stylish element that complements the interior. Decoupage of candles with your own hands looks very beautiful and festive. It creates a unique atmosphere of a real Christmas fairy tale.

The method was first used in the 12th century to decorate old and tatty furniture in the houses of Chinese peasants.

All you need is a decorative item, available materials and equipment. To ensure that decoupling candles with your own hands at home does not cause difficulties, adhere to the following rules:

  • Process the surface of the selected object. If it is uneven, sand it and apply 2-3 layers of primer. With smooth and even products that have been correctly selected, there is no such need.
  • Prepare your drawing. Remove the top bright layer of the napkin and cut out the desired fragment using scissors. If the picture is too small or is made on thin paper, cut out only large elements, draw the rest of the details with paints and a thin brush in place.
  • Glue the pattern to the surface. Dip a flat brush into a small amount of glue and carefully spread it over the outer layer of the napkin. Make sure that no folds or bubbles form on it - straighten them with a brush. Start gluing the design from the center, smoothly moving to the edges, then wait until it dries.
  • When the ornament is dry, paint on the missing parts and add other decorations - rhinestones, beads, sparkles. Cover the finished work with a special varnish to fix it and protect it from minor mechanical damage. If you apply the varnish in two layers, wait until the first one dries and then apply the second.

If you have a creative idea, you can safely get to work

Cold way

This option is suitable for thin candles - the paper will adhere more tightly to their surface. The cold method is the simplest solution to how to make decoupage candles with your own hands if you are a beginner and not familiar with all the intricacies of this technique. This is done as follows:

  • Prepare the picture as indicated in the rules.
  • If you are decorating a candle with a continuous layer, leave a little material for the seam.
  • Coat the napkin with glue and attach it to the decor item.
  • Smooth it out with a stick from the center to the edges.
  • Trim off any remaining paper to create neat seams.

Hot method (using a spoon)

For the hot method you will need two candles, a napkin or card with a pattern and a spoon. Next, follow the instructions on how to make hot decoupage of a candle with your own hands step by step:

  1. Cut out elements from a napkin.
  2. Separate the two bottom layers and apply the pattern.
  3. Heat the spoon over the fire of the second candle.
  4. Use the convex side of a hot spoon to smoothly move from the center of the design to its edges.
  5. Do not leave it in one place for a long time to avoid paraffin streaks.
  6. The paper will instantly become saturated with wax and adhere firmly to the workpiece.
  7. Go around the circle with a soft sponge and sand the surface.

Using a hair dryer

An ordinary hairdryer can be a good assistant for a master class on how to decoupage a candle with your own hands:

  • Prepare the necessary equipment in advance - white candles, napkins with pictures, scissors and a ruler, a brush, a paper knife and don’t forget about the hairdryer.
  • Decide on the size of the design - add a centimeter of napkin to the height and width of the product.
  • Separate the top layer with the picture and firmly attach it to the paraffin, with the pattern facing up.
  • Turn the hairdryer on to the highest setting and let it heat up.
  • Direct a stream of hot air at the element to be decorated and hold it in your hands.
  • Then heat the napkin itself with a hairdryer, slowly moving it over the surface of the object to be decorated.
  • Hold the air flow in one place until it sticks, press it with your fingers, but be careful not to get burned.
  • If necessary, turn on the hair dryer, let the candle cool, and then repeat the process.
  • Use a brush to smooth out any wrinkles or folds that appear.
  • Cut the paper edges at the base and bend their ends, fix them with hot air.
  • Use a paper knife to cut off the remaining tissue from the wick. If they start to come off, heat them again with a hairdryer until they are soaked in wax until they are completely glued.

What is candle decoupage?

Handicraft art is based on working with paper applications, which can be applied to almost any surface - ceramics, wood or glass. To ensure that the design remains functional, it is coated with several layers of special varnish.

A lot of time has passed since then, new decorative elements have appeared, and do-it-yourself candle decoupage has become a popular activity. For it, multilayer napkins with various patterns or special cards made of rice paper are used.

The design method is accessible to anyone; all the necessary products can be easily found in the store.

How to choose a candle for decoupage?

The secret of beautiful and effective decoupage is the correctly selected wax blank. It is recommended to give preference to thick and white candles with a smooth surface. The color is considered neutral and is well suited for implementing any creative ideas.

When choosing it, you should pay attention to a number of the following nuances:

  1. Density of the top layer. The denser and smoother it is, the less likely it is that the paper fragments will quickly heat up and ignite.
  2. Work surface color. To work with colored products, you should choose prints or cards that are close to their tone. The colors of the picture transferred to them will be less bright than on a napkin or card.
  3. Thickness of candles. Thin and small wax objects will be difficult to use for their intended purpose, since they heat up immediately and completely. For them, you should choose a small pattern, small figures or notes.

Necessary tools and items for decoupage

As with any hobby related to handmade, decoupage cannot be done without special tools. The minimum set includes:

  • sharp scissors for cutting out appliqués;
  • palette or plastic plate for mixing paints;
  • synthetic brushes and acrylic paints;
  • insert file for transferring the design to the workpiece;
  • cards, placemats, and picture printouts;
  • universal acrylic primer and varnish-glue for decoupage;
  • special finishing varnish.

A more serious hobby and participation in master classes will require additional items:

  1. Varnishes with different properties - craquelure, gold leaf, mastic, shimmer.
  2. Table and dessert spoons - for hot decoration.
  3. A smooth cylindrical stick - preferably glass.
  4. Skins for surface treatment - making them smooth.
  5. Thermal tapes and adhesive-based rhinestones, other decorative accessories.
  6. Wax blanks with which you will work.

Decoupage candles for the New Year: do it yourself

Winter holidays are a great opportunity to show your imagination and realize your inspiration. You can realize almost any idea for decoupaging a candle for the New Year with your own hands, using various elements and designs for decoration.

New Year is one of the most favorite holidays of every person.

Wax products decorated in red, gold and silver colors, decorated with sparkles and decorative braid will look original and stylish.

  1. In the first case, you will need a white candle, a napkin with red, yellow and green shades, a small sponge and an acrylic golden outline. Prepare and glue the drawing using one of the above methods. Apply acrylic paint to the background using a sponge and let it dry. Draw the outline of the Christmas stars and leave the craft to dry for 5-6 hours. To create a festive atmosphere, use scented products with orange, cinnamon or pine scent.
  2. The second option differs in color scheme - replace the gold outline with a silver one, choose a thematic picture in cool colors and add a little sparkle upon completion of the work. Fix them with varnish and let the entire structure dry for 6 hours.
  3. To implement this idea, take a decorative braid and two colors of acrylic outline - white mother-of-pearl and white with gold glitter, a suitable pattern, a sponge and a simple white candle. The principle of drawing a picture remains the same. Create a background using a sponge and glitter outline and let it dry for 20 minutes. Decorate the top of the candle with white mother-of-pearl stars and outline the stars with a gold outline. Set the piece aside for 2 hours to allow it to dry completely. Decorate it with decorative braid along the bottom of the picture, gluing it with special glue.

Often, in search of an unusual and memorable gift, we resort to non-standard solutions, trying our hand at needlework. The result of our labor is beautiful and functional products that remain in the memory of loved ones for a long time. In the article we will consider one of the interesting areas of applied creativity - decoupage of candles.

The essence of decor

Decoupage involves the technology of decorating a surface using a design cut out of paper and pasted with a special glue. Essentially, this is an improvement in the aesthetic appeal of a product or some kind of applique made of thin paper with a beautiful design in the form of a specific composition. The drawing can be thematic or abstract; its size depends on the shape of the work item. A prerequisite for the process is varnishing the picture.

Candle selection

Not every candle is suitable for decoupage. Preferred choice for work white wax blanks. They will not distort the colors of the picture, due to which it will be possible to maintain its brightness and expressiveness of the contours of the picture.

It is advisable that the surface of the candle be smooth (this makes it easier to glue the paper with the image).

It is more convenient to use candles with dense top layer and maximum smooth surface. The denser and smoother they are, the better, and the risk of fire of the glued fragment is reduced. If you can’t find a white candle, you can buy a light one; it also won’t distort the colors of the picture. When it comes to candle thickness and size, thin and small candles can be dangerous if lit. They warm up quickly, and therefore can only carry a decorative load.

Execution Rules

Regardless of the theme and material used for decoupage It is necessary to pay attention to every step of the technology.

  • Sand the surface of the uneven candle and apply a primer to it (2-3 layers). For smooth ones, only priming is enough.
  • Prepare the drawing by removing the top layer with the image from the napkin and cutting out the desired fragment.
  • Small elements are not cut out, but drawn with special paints directly on the work surface.
  • When gluing a paper picture to the working base, take a brush and straighten out all the air bubbles, leveling the picture.
  • The straightening of the pattern begins from the center to the edges. After fixing it, it must be dried.
  • After drying, they begin to decorate the candle, painting on the missing elements with a brush and paints.
  • If necessary, the product is decorated with rhinestones, beads, and beautiful packaging.

Types of equipment

Today you can decoupage candles at home in three ways:

  • cold method;
  • using a spoon;
  • using a hairdryer.

Each type has its own nuances. Let's look at three master classes based on different types of execution.

Cold way

This technique is good for beginner craftswomen and allows you to get acquainted with the basics of decoupage. If you can’t find thick candles to work with, you can use those with relatively loose walls.

To transform them you will need decoupage napkins, sharp nail scissors and a stick with a smooth surface.

First, prepare the design by cutting it out with an allowance along the contour of 1 cm on all sides. The picture is coated with glue, applied to the candle and leveled, pressing it to the wax surface.

If you want to cover the candle completely, cut out a rectangular blank with allowances for one edge to overlap the other.

The seams must be neat.

Hot method

To make such beauty, a spoon, a candle for heating the spoon, a beautiful napkin or a decoupage card are prepared in advance for the work. First, prepare the drawing by cutting out the required fragment. According to the rules of decoupage, it is necessary to separate the two lower layers from the napkin, leaving only the one on which the print is applied. Next, the spoon is heated over the second auxiliary candle and, applying the picture to the candle to be decorated, the drawing is glued with its help. Glue the napkin with the convex side of the spoon, trying not to move it over one place for too long so that the paraffin does not drip. After the paper is imprinted into the paraffin base, you can go over the base with a sponge.

With hairdryer

This master class is somewhat different from the previous two. To create such a gift, you should prepare in advance the candles themselves, napkins for decoupage, a hairdryer and decor, and the necessary accessories for cutting and painting. After the picture is cut out, it must be attached as close as possible to the candle to be decorated in the selected place with the pattern facing up. The hairdryer is turned on at full power, and a piece of paper is glued with it.

To do this, a stream of hot air is directed at the picture pressed against the candle. As it heats up, make sure that the picture does not gather in folds; it is leveled and smoothed with a flat brush. Using this principle, you can cover the entire candle with a napkin, bending its upper and lower edges and sealing them with a paraffin base for reliable fixation.

You will learn more about how to decoupage a candle with a hairdryer below.

Solutions for different holidays

Decoupage candles are a great idea for any holiday. If you approach the choice of pictures creatively and tastefully, you can create a unique product that will be appreciated by those for whom it is intended. Today, decoupage napkins can convey the atmosphere of any holiday. For example,

  • for the New Year you can purchase decorative material depicting Santa Claus, Christmas sketches, all kinds of plot pictures with fluffy bunnies, Christmas trees, animals and snowmen against the background of fir branches, kids with gifts and other New Year's paraphernalia;
  • by March 8 it is not difficult to choose napkins with birds, colorful flowers and various inscriptions, floral patterns located at the bottom, or completely covering the entire surface of the napkins;
  • for Valentine's Day you can find decorative napkins with a variety of hearts, bears, bunnies or even butterflies, letters and inscriptions about love;
  • for a birthday you can choose any pictures, which will depend on the time of year (for example, flowers, cakes, gifts);
  • on your wedding day you can give beautiful candles decorated with napkins with a picture of the bride and groom, be they babies, bears or angels dressed in matching outfits;
  • for Halloween you can find decoupage paper with bats, pumpkins, witch hats;
  • for angel day You can give a candle decorated with a picture of angels and decorated with silver acrylic paint.

Decor options

You can decorate a handmade candle with various decorative elements. For example, it could be a transparent package with a satin ribbon and a tiny card on which you can write the name of the giver and a wish to the hero of the occasion.

There are several ways. I offer two methods in one master class. Both methods are hot, but there are some differences in their execution. But keep in mind that you should only use wide candles to avoid fire. The paper is impregnated with wax and should not catch fire; usually the candle burns out in a “cup”. Still, it is better to place such candles in a tall glass candlestick, for example, made from. Never forget about safety precautions when dealing with open fire!

So, the first method is an example decoupage candle “Snowman”.

For it I needed:

  • A white (preferably) candle from IKEA
  • single-layer paper napkin with New Year's pattern
  • tablespoon
  • candle in a metal sleeve and saucer
  • scissors
  • lighter
  • pearl contour (optional)

At the very first stage, I prepared a napkin. I cut out the design so that it could cover the volume and cover the height of the candle. And a small seam allowance.

The prepared fragment of the napkin was applied to the surface of the candle.

She lit a small candle and heated a tablespoon. So that there is no soot on the napkin, I heat the spoon with the inside.

Using the outer side of the spoon, I make even movements across the napkin. The wax melts and saturates the napkin. Thus, gluing occurs.

Advice: the spoon must be in continuous motion, otherwise smudges or depressed pits will form.

When the napkin is glued around the candle, I overlap the joint of the napkin and glue it in the same way with a hot spoon.

I leave the candle to cool. She's almost ready.

I give the candle a finished look by adding an outline.

For example New Year's candle "Bears in the North" Let's consider the second method.

I have prepared for this method:

  • a white or yellow candle, preferably from IKEA
  • decoupage paper napkin with a New Year's pattern
  • wax paper
  • scissors

I cut out the motif from a napkin in the same way as in the first case, according to the size of the candle in terms of volume and height.

I separate the napkin layer from the lower layers and smooth it over the surface. I wrap it around the candle and press it with wax paper on top.

I turn on the hairdryer and direct hot air to the place where the drawing is located. After some time, the wax begins to melt.

The picture is saturated with wax, the napkin is tightly glued to the candle. As in the first case, you need to carefully direct the hot air dryer to the same place to avoid the formation of smudges and dents, because the wax becomes soft. I remove the wax paper.

There was some space left between the edges of the candle and the napkin, so I decided to decorate it with dots using acrylic paint.

Both candles are ready. Dear craftswomen, try it, choose which method you like.

Happy new creative year!
