Making a mini drill for circuit boards with your own hands. How to make a mini drill with your own hands: the most effective way. General information about drilling machines

A mini drill is an indispensable tool when working with printed circuit boards. In the shop wide range of these devices, but they are easy to make yourself, because everything you need for this can be found in any home. You will need:

  1. Motor from the car radio (suitable for a hair dryer or a child's toy);
  2. Chuck or collet (clamp for drills);
  3. Power supply or battery;
  4. Housing made of plastic or metal;
  5. Hot melt or cold welding;
  6. Drill;
  7. Wires.

First of all, it is necessary to attach a cartridge or collet to the motor shaft. To do this, before buying a collet, measure the motor shaft, they come in two sizes - 1.5 and 2.3 mm, and buy the appropriate part. Secure the chuck with hot glue to prevent excessive vibration. When using cold welding, work very quickly, it freezes almost instantly.

In the prepared case (for example, a plastic cylinder with a lid), cut off the bottom, you will need to insert a motor here. Poke holes in the cap for the wires to come out. If this is a case from a lantern, then this perfect option with ready-made output points.

When you put the motor with the cartridge into the housing, check whether it sits tightly there, because during operation the slightest vibration will affect the quality. If necessary, put on glue or cold welding.

Solder the output wires to the power supply or battery, be sure to isolate the connection points. For convenience in work, a button for turning off can be soldered into one of the wires. On this side, the case from the flashlight has another advantage - there is a ready-made hole for the button.

If the drill turns in the wrong direction, reverse the polarity of the wires. In case of strong vibration, check the tightness of the collet or chuck.

Mechanical Mini Drill + (Video)

If you, in addition to electronics, are also fond of fishing, then in your house there will certainly be old fishing rod with spinning reel. It will serve as the basis for a mechanical mini-drill.

First, remove the spool from the reel, it is fastened with a screw on the shaft. Next, measure the length of the shaft and compare it with the length of the chuck bore. If the shaft is longer, cut it to fit the chuck bore. Place the chuck (or collet) onto the shaft using hot melt adhesive or cold welding.

For the convenience of work, it remains to redo the coil handle, it is long enough and will interfere with the speed of drilling. Saw off part of the long knee of the handle, and fasten the handle directly to the remaining segment. It is fastened with a rather easily riveted metal pin.

Your power drill is ready to go.

Another modification of the mini drill

Consider the version of creating a mini-drill with your own hands using an antiperspirant container as a body. To get started, choose a motor that is suitable in size, a cassette from a tape recorder is the best option.

Cut a hole in the body for a button (use the switch from an old carrier as a button), cut off the bottom and make a suitable outlet for a chuck or collet in the lid.

Insert a motor with a fixed cartridge into the body with wires to the cut bottom. If you have chosen the dimensions of the motor for the dimensions of the body, no glue is needed. Put on and screw on the lid.

It remains to connect the button and the power supply. After all the circuits are closed, fix the button in the hole made.

DIY materials for a mini drill

There are many alternative options using your inventive skills to create a mini drill with your own hands. The reasons for creating such tools can be:

  • DVD drive;
  • Motor from an old electric razor;
  • Tooth electric brush;
  • Glue gun handle with suitable motor;
  • Non-working screwdriver;
  • washing machine motor;
  • Old hair dryer;
  • Plastic pipe.

All these seemingly unnecessary little things can do a good job and become the main detail for creating the necessary tool.

Important! When working with a homemade mini drill, try to keep the drill perpendicular working surface. This will protect the drill from breakage and prolong the life of your device.

How to make a mini drill chuck + (Video)

For a homemade cartridge, you will need a piece of metal or textolite pipe, the diameter of which is suitable for the motor shaft. The length of the homemade sleeve should be at least 2 times the length of the shaft and allow the drill to be securely fastened.

You can fix the sleeve with screws or hot glue. As a rule, the motor shaft has a diameter of 2-5 mm, and drills for making boards have a smaller diameter. This means that it is necessary to fill the resulting space with filler and achieve alignment of the drill and shaft.

Take rosin as a filler and pour it into the hole of the sleeve. Melt the rosin with a soldering iron and insert the drill. The rosin will harden and hold it securely.

To achieve perfect alignment, melt the rosin again and turn on the power. While the rosin is not frozen, try using tweezers to correct the position of the drill. If necessary, repeat the operation again.

Compact homemade mini drill can be used for drilling printed circuit boards, if you suddenly decide to collect some . In addition, it is useful for ordinary household purposes, if there is a need to drill a small hole in wooden board or plastic. It is much more convenient to work with such a tool than with a large drill or screwdriver, since the mini version is much lighter and more compact, which allows you to do small work faster and better. Next, we will tell you how to make a mini drill from a motor with your own hands, providing photo instructions and visual video examples.

Method number 1 - Second life to an old tape recorder

As you understand, the first version of a home-made mini drill will be made from a time-forgotten CD recorder. All you need from the former hit of sales is a motor that will rotate the chuck with the tool. Since the device is powered by 6 volts, you will additionally have to find an appropriate power supply or several batteries. You can use a usb adapter, but the power will be slightly reduced in this case. In addition, you need to buy a collet yourself (sold in any radio store or on the market, on the Internet on AliExpress, the price is low) and find a suitable case for homemade work, although this is not necessary, you can hold the tool directly by the motor.

So, in order to independently make a mini drill from a motor at home, you must follow these steps:

That's the whole technology of assembling the device with your own hands. As you can see, making a microdrill out of a motor is not at all difficult, even for a novice electrician. The only drawback of such a device is the low strength of a thin drill. If you drill holes that are not at right angles, it will break immediately, so be careful and buy a few spare drills for practice.

Very important point, which you should know about - to make the drill spin in the opposite direction, just swap the wires! interesting video instructions on how to make a simple drill, you can see below:

A simple drill from improvised means

Method number 2 - Coil in motion!

One more original way make a mini drill at home - using a reel from a fishing rod. In this case, the assembly technology is quite simple, but the principle of operation itself will already be based on mechanical rotation, you will get a mini hand drill

To make a device with your own hands, you will need:

  • spinning coil;
  • cartridge from old drill or a collet clamp of a suitable size;
  • hot melt or cold welding;
  • drill.

The assembly process is quite simple and consists of only two steps. First of all, you need to dismantle the spool with fishing line and cut off the remaining excess axis.
After that, the cartridge is glued to the remaining stem. You can do without a cartridge and install a collet instead. When the glue hardens, you can check the finished mini drill. You can see all the assembly details in this video example:

How to make a micro drill from a coil yourself

Method #3 - The Antiperspirant Idea

Well, the last version of a homemade mini drill that we would like to provide to readers is using a cassette motor and an antiperspirant container. The advantage of this model is that it is controlled by a separate on / off button and has a convenient case. Such a homemade product will be powered by a conventional power supply, which must be selected based on the characteristics of the motor.

So, first you will need to prepare the following materials:

  • a motor from a tape recorder;
  • suitable collet with a drill;
  • used antiperspirant;
  • RCA jack for power supply and a counterpart for it;
  • power unit;
  • switch from an old carrier.

First of all, you need to make a mini drill according to the instructions provided at the very beginning: put the collet on the shaft and fasten it with bolts. Next, the motor housing is installed in an antiperspirant. As you can see from the photo, the dimensions are ideal for installing the part. If the motor has free play inside the housing, secure it with duct tape and hot melt adhesive.

After that, in the top cover you need to drill a hole for the exit of the collet or the drill itself. At the same time, you need to make a hole in the bottom for the power connector. Using a clerical knife, you must also cut out a window for the switch, then solder all the elements of the circuit in series and install them in a place convenient for you.

The advantage of this version of a homemade mini drill is easy operation, small size and stylish design. appearance. We recommend doing this option at home, because it is the most convenient, safe and at the same time affordable.

An overview of various creation ideas

Examples for inspiration

Above, we have provided 3 of the most popular options for a homemade micro drill for drilling printed circuit boards. We found a few more on the forums original ideas, which may inspire you to make your own, unique homemade.

So, to your attention a photo of the idea of \u200b\u200bparts for creating a mini drill with your own hands at home:

  1. Glue gun handle for easy operation. The motor is taken from an old Canon printer. Power is supplied from a conventional charger.

  2. The second life of the hair dryer. According to the inventor, this homemade product is assembled on the basis of a motor from a conventional household hair dryer, which means it does not require special power supplies and has high power. However, do not forget about the danger of mains voltage, so you need a reliable case and isolation of all connections. Similarly, you can make a device from an old blender, leaving the handle intact.

  3. Toothbrush for drilling circuit boards. The next idea is to use a toothbrush as a mini drill. There are already batteries and a motor, you just need to cut off the upper part and install a collet nozzle.

  4. A plastic bottle can also be successfully used as a container for homemade drill, and the collet chuck perfectly replaces a special sleeve, an analogue of which is in the terminal blocks for wires.

  5. Another option with a toggle switch for easy control. In this case, to drill holes on the seals, you will not need to constantly connect the power plug to the outlet. In addition, a comfortable handle will make the drilling process more comfortable.

That's all I wanted to tell you about how to make a mini drill from a motor with your own hands. As you can see, there is nothing complicated, and there are an unlimited number of ideas for assembling. We hope that our photo examples and video instructions were useful and interesting for you. In addition, you can assemble a microdrill on your own using an old DVD drive, a screwdriver, an electric razor, and even a motor from a washing machine!

In today's video, I will show you a great idea on how to make a mini drill for drilling circuit boards or small parts with your own hands. You can make a mini drill at home almost from improvised materials, and to simplify the design, we will not use a collet chuck that is not so easy to get, and will replace it with just one clamp. In the role of the so-called body, you can use waste pvc pipes or metal plastic. Otherwise, you can come up with an alternative way to create a case from what is lying around at your fingertips. Make a mini drill with your own hands and even use a drill for polishing or drilling small parts from soft material. And if available, opportunities and funds, it will be possible to purchase a collet chuck and a more powerful engine.

PCB Drilling Machine (ATtiny13, C)

Tell in:

We have already learned how to etch boards, now we need to drill holes. You can use a hand drill, you can use an electric drill, you can use a machine tool ... An electric drill is inconvenient - drills often break. The machine is good, but very expensive. Therefore, it was decided to bungled himself.

Bed. For a long time I was looking for what to make a bed. On the Internet, I found the idea to use a tripod from a microscope as a bed. The case for small - to find a broken microscope. This turned out to be the most difficult… But after a long search, I found a microscope stand (without a tube, etc.) for $20.

Engine. I had to think no less than about the bed - ready-made engines with a cartridge cost from $ 40 ... To disassemble a screwdriver is also a little expensive, and it's a pity. But the engine from a 12-volt screwdriver is just right! It costs $ 9 and the availability is simple - on the market, where power tools are repaired.

Cartridge. There are collet cartridges on the radio market (pictured below), but after trying 2 pieces I realized - garbage. Strong beating of the drill, which cannot be eliminated in any way. I found a wonderful dremel 4486 cartridge, like this:

but you need to grind an additional adapter to it, and it costs decently - about $ 20. So far I have settled on a collet chuck, but I am looking for a replacement for it.

Patron (2 series).

I got hold of a Dremel cartridge and bought it. It cost 80 hryvnia ($16). And he carved an adapter for it. The drawer is here:

There is a very tricky thread in the cartridge, but knowledgeable people told me its parameters. Diameter 7.05mm 40 threads per inch. The shaft is screwed onto the finished adapter tightly, but without any effort!

Photo of the finished design with a cartridge:

The adapter is mounted on the shaft quite tightly, so there is no need for fastening with screws. Test drilling showed excellent results! There is no beating at all!

speed controller.

DIY mini drill.Package

If I dismantled a screwdriver with a regulator, then I could use it, but I didn’t have a regulator. So I had to come up with. It turned out to be quite simple. I took the attiny13 controller, on which I implemented a PWM controlled by the voltage at pin 3. Pin 2 is used to turn on the engine. A pedal and a switch are connected to it, in case there is no pedal. I used an irf540 transistor as a key.

Printed circuit board.

Firmware.

The firmware exists in two versions - with a smooth start, and a normal start. who likes it and what engine is worth. My engine draws up to 20A during a normal start, which is a bit too much ...

fuses are exposed in the project, but if someone sews not from codevisionavr, then I will repeat them here:

On the left is the power connector and the regulator, on the right is the switch and the pedal connector. At the bottom of the transistor (uses the frame as a heat sink).

In my “microscope” the microfeed did not work, but I don’t need it, and half a turn of the feed knob (black knob) leads to the drill moving 15-20mm, which is quite enough for comfortable drilling.

How and from what to assemble a mini-drill with your own hands

Everyone knows that a drill in the household is a very useful and versatile tool.

DIY mini drill video

If you have a drill at home, you can hang a picture on the wall, fix furniture, fix a number of necessary items. But what if there is no drill at home, and constantly asking neighbors is already somehow inconvenient?

You can buy it in the store, but the device is very expensive. And you can assemble a mini-drill with your own hands based on improvised materials that are in almost every home. How to do this, we will tell in this material, presenting to your attention several simple ways assembling a mini-drill with your own hands at home.

Mini drill from electric chuck

The first version of assembling this device with your own hands is based on the use of an electric cartridge. which can be purchased separately, or taken from the light bulb. If you buy it, then it is very inexpensive, but this cost will be justified.

Also, to assemble a mini-drill with your own hands from a cartridge, you will need the following things:

  • motor;
  • a jar of soap bubbles;
  • construction knife;
  • insulating tape;
  • hot glue;
  • soldering lamp;
  • household switch.

Body and core of mini drill

Work must begin with the preparation of the body of the mini-drill, which will serve as a jar of soap bubbles. This is done like this:

  • Get the lid off the jar. For this purpose, we heat the soldering iron and use it to make a small hole in the lid of the jar.
  • The diameter of this hole should be slightly larger than the diameter of the drill base.
  • The bottom of the jar must be completely cut out.

Let's start working with the core:

  1. We connect the cartridge with the motor. Most often, motors are taken from already used different tools.
  2. Before the bonding process, the motor must be completely degreased with acetone.
  3. The cartridge can also be degreased, but it is not necessary to water it like a motor with acetone. A normal wipe will suffice.

The method of fastening occurs by cold welding. If this method does not suit you, you can also use hot glue. Remember that the more complex your future mini-drill is, the more seriously you will need materials to assemble it yourself.

During landing for welding or glue, you need to work very carefully so that everything turns out as smooth as possible. Redoing the work later will not work, keep this in mind.

You also need to consider the following:

  • at the attachment point on the cartridge there is a hole that must be covered before connecting the parts;
  • putty is carried out using simple plasticine;
  • only holes need to be filled with plasticine; it should not remain on top of the cartridge.

Manufacturing process

When you have prepared the body and core, you can proceed directly to assembling the drill with your own hands:

A ready-made mini-drill is good in that it can work both on batteries and on electric power. We considered the option of assembling a universal model.

Naturally, without having the skills to work with electricity, it will be extremely difficult to assemble such a drill with your own hands. Below we suggest that you consider assembly options for simpler drills for small household needs.

How to assemble a drill based on the handle body with your own hands

One of the options for the simplest drill is makeshift fixture based on a regular ballpoint pen.

To make it, you will need the following materials: ballpoint pen; drill with the required diameter; hot glue; a strong stick with handles on the end, with which it can be rotated.

Pay special attention to the choice of a handle for the manufacture of a future drill, and specifically, its body, since during operation the main load will fall on the body.

The requirements for the body of the pen are as follows:

  • it must be as strong as possible to withstand the load;
  • the best option is a case based on high-quality metals;
  • if you don't have a pen with a metal body, choose a pen based on thick plastic.

The build process looks like this:

  • Dismantle the handle until only one body remains of it.
  • The lower part of the case, where the writing rod usually sticks out, needs to be unscrewed.
  • Instead of this part, insert the drill into the body in such a way that its working part sticks out from under the bottom part, and the second part is inserted into the hole that is in the stick.
  • The stick is inserted into the body at the same time as the drill.
  • In order for the drill to be integral, it is fixed to the body wall with hot glue.
  • When you turn the mechanism for special handles, the drill will rotate, providing the desired work by pressing the handle body.

Making a drill based on a toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes are very convenient to use, but impractical in the sense that the bristles cannot be changed after use, this expensive device, like a simple brush, has to be thrown away.

But you can not do this, using the body of an electric brush to make a drill with your own hands.

We take an old electric brush and cut everything on it to the body. Next, you need to connect the motor shaft to the drill using a collet clamp, which must be purchased separately.

When buying a collet clamp (or chuck), be sure to find out in advance what shaft the motor has in the brush in diameter. Motors differ from each other in the diameter of the mounted shaft.

The collet clamp is inexpensive and can be purchased at the radio market or in a specialized online store. It includes a chuck and interchangeable drill bits with different diameters that are inserted into the chuck.

The most difficult thing in this case is to put a collet clamp on the brush engine. The cartridge is designed for a shaft of 2 mm, and the motor here has less. To do this, each fastener screw must first be turned to give it a conical shape. so that you can adjust the minimum diameter of the chuck mount to the diameter of the motor shaft.

Of course, a mini-drill with your own hands can be assembled not only on the basis of brushes or old pens. but also other devices, folk craftsmen daily come up with new ways to homemade assembly. However, the options discussed above are suitable even for those who have never encountered this and are assembling such devices for the first time in their lives.

How to make a mini drill with your own hands

Making a mini drill

This article explains how himselfcreate a mini drillfor board drilling This method is the simplest and cheapest.

1. We need an engine, which one you take, see for yourself. An engine from toys that runs on one battery will not work. For example, the following will do.

The engine from the tape recorder is also suitable, as in the main picture.

2. We go to the radio store and ask for a collet clamp. Yes, in this article I will tell you how to make a mini drill from a collet clamp (chuck) with my own hands.

In the picture, the clamp itself is located in the center, and interchangeable insides are lined up around it for different drill diameters.

When buying a collet clamp, take the motor with you, or measure the diameter of the motor shaft, since the collet clamps for different diameters of motor shafts

3. We put a collet clamp on our motor and get a mini drill. Attach a switch next to the motor, or a micro switch. What would work when pressed when you need to drill a hole.

In this picture, you can see both the engine and our collet clamp dressed on it. Use the power supply for work. Not from a battery. You can simply take a transformer at the output of 12 volts, connect a diode bridge to it and use it. Good luck in creating a mini drill

PCB drilling machine belongs to the category of mini equipment special purpose. If desired, such a machine can be made with your own hands, using available components for this. Any specialist will confirm that it is difficult to do without the use of such an apparatus in the production of electrical products, the circuit elements of which are mounted on special printed circuit boards.

General information about drilling machines

Any drilling machine necessary in order to enable efficient and accurate machining of parts made from various materials. Where high precision machining is required (and this also applies to the process of drilling holes), from technological process should be excluded as much as possible. manual labor. Similar tasks can be solved by anyone, including home-made ones. It is practically impossible to do without machine equipment when processing hard materials, for drilling holes in which the efforts of the operator himself may not be enough.

The design of a bench drill with a belt drive (click to enlarge)

Any drilling machine is a structure assembled from many components that are securely and accurately fixed relative to each other on the supporting element. Some of these nodes are attached to load-bearing structure rigidly, and some can move and be fixed in one or more spatial positions.

The basic functions of any drilling machine, due to which the processing process is ensured, is the rotation and movement in the vertical direction of the cutting tool - the drill. On many modern models of such machines, the working head with the cutting tool can also move in a horizontal plane, which makes it possible to use this equipment for drilling several holes without moving the part. In addition, automation systems are being actively introduced into modern drilling machines, which significantly increases their productivity and improves processing accuracy.

Below, for example, several design options for boards are presented. Any of these schemes can serve as a model for your machine.

Drawings of machine parts (click to enlarge)

Let's figure out what all these nodes are for and how to assemble a home-made mini-machine from them.

Structural elements of a drilling mini-machine

Self-assembled mini-drilling machines can be seriously different from each other: it all depends on what components and materials were used to make them. However, both factory and homemade models of such equipment work on the same principle and are designed to perform similar functions.

The supporting element of the structure is the base frame, which also ensures the stability of the equipment during the drilling process. Based on the purpose of this structural element, it is desirable to make a frame from metal frame, the weight of which should significantly exceed the total mass of all other components of the equipment. If you neglect this requirement, you will not be able to ensure the stability of your home-made machine, which means you will not achieve the required drilling accuracy.

The role of the element on which the drilling head is attached is performed by a transitional stabilizing frame. It is best made from a metal rail or corners.

The bar and shock-absorbing device are designed to ensure vertical movement of the drilling head and its springing. As such a bar (it is better to fix it with a shock absorber), you can use any design (it is only important that it performs the functions assigned to it). In this case, a powerful hydraulic shock absorber may come in handy. If you don’t have such a shock absorber, you can make the bar yourself or use spring structures taken from old office furniture.

The vertical movement of the drilling head is controlled using a special handle, one end of which is connected to the body of the mini-drilling machine, its shock absorber or stabilizing frame.

The engine mount is mounted on a stabilizing frame. The design of such a device, which can be wooden block, clamp, etc., will depend on the configuration and design features other components of the drilling machine for printed circuit boards. The use of such a mount is due not only to the need for its reliable fixation, but also to the fact that you must bring the motor shaft to the required distance from the travel bar.

The choice of an electric motor that can be equipped with a do-it-yourself mini-drilling machine should not cause any problems. As such a drive unit, you can use electric motors from a compact drill, cassette recorder, computer drive, printer, and other devices that you no longer use.

Depending on which electric motor you found, clamping mechanisms for fixing drills are selected. The most convenient and versatile of these mechanisms are cartridges from a compact drill. If a suitable cartridge could not be found, a collet mechanism can also be used. Choose parameters clamping device so that very small drills (or even "micro" drills) can be fixed in it. To connect the clamping device to the motor shaft, it is necessary to use adapters, the dimensions and design of which will be determined by the type of the selected motor.

Depending on which electric motor you installed on your mini drilling machine, you need to choose a power supply. With this choice, attention should be paid to ensure that the characteristics of the power supply fully correspond to the voltage and current parameters for which the electric motor is designed.

How to assemble a homemade device

As practice shows, it is most convenient to assemble a home-made machine for drilling holes in printed circuit boards in certain sequence. It is necessary to act in accordance with the following algorithm.

  • The bed is being mounted, and legs are attached to its underside, if they are provided for in the design.
  • Attached to the assembled bed is a travel bar and a holder frame on which the drilling head will be mounted.
  • The holder frame is connected to a shock absorber, which is also fixed on the equipment frame.
  • A handle for controlling the movement of the drilling head is installed, connected to a shock absorber or holder frame.
  • An electric motor is mounted, the position of which is carefully regulated.
  • A collet or universal chuck from a drill is attached to the drive motor shaft by means of adapters.
  • The power supply is being installed, connected to the electric motor by means of electrical wires.
  • A drill is installed in the chuck and securely fixed in it.
  • The assembled home-made machine is tested by trying to drill a hole in a sheet dielectric with it.

In order to ensure that your homemade mini-drilling machine can always be disassembled and modified, it is best to use bolts and nuts to connect its structural elements.

Because my self-made mini-drill has already worked out its work and, to be honest, I was tortured by the constant search and replacement of the desired collet for each drill size.
Somehow, while climbing DX, I stumbled upon this drill. What immediately bribed me was, of course, a real cartridge! In appearance, everything is done quite conveniently and the power supply is included. Generally ordered.
Got it three weeks later. All in a small suitcase. The set includes a drill itself, a power supply with voltage regulation 24-36V, 5 drills, 5 discs and a shank for them.

And so, first impressions. The suitcase is of acceptable quality, traces of molding are visible, but overall it is quite durable.
The drill is half metal, half plastic. It lies comfortably in the hand, the switch hook seemed to me a little long, but not critical.

There is a switch for the direction of rotation

The wire is about 120cm long, very soft. Plus, the power supply has a wire about a meter.
The power supply, as stated, produces from 24V to 36V. True, the adjustment is not very linear, the first half of the regulator stroke does not affect the output voltage in any way.

A 220V 10A limit switch is used as a switch in the drill, which is very good.
It is stated that the cartridge is designed for drills 0.3-4mm. In fact, you can clamp a drill with a smaller diameter, but this is probably still a new cartridge.
The speed range of the drill by ear is from 10 to 15 thousand rpm. More than enough power for drilling textolite. For use with discs, a little less, but this is not its main function.
What I really liked is the brake when the switch is released. It looks like the motor is shorting out when it's off. Never thought about it. Very convenient, no need to wait until it stops to aim for the next hole.

In general, the purchase is satisfied. The drill is definitely worth the money. I looked at other stores and couldn't find it cheaper anywhere.
