How to repaint a door. How to prepare interior doors for painting without removing old paint? How to paint over a door

Surely, when building or renovating a house, you installed a high-quality, solid door made of natural wood. But over time, even she will lose her attractive appearance... This is not at all a reason for replacement, because wooden door It is not at all difficult to paint it yourself. The choice of color depends only on your desire, but you need to know the painting technology and the subtleties of the process.

Features of the composition for painting

Whether you need to renovate old doors or give a different look to new ones, right choice paintwork is very important. The quality and service life of a wooden door depends on it. Let's consider the most common tools.

Varnishes - colored, glossy or matte. Their main property is that the structure of the wood will be visible under the layer of substance. If you have completely restored the door, then varnishing is unlikely to work, since all defects and subtleties of processing will be visible. There are several varnish options:

  • oil based;
  • alcohol varnish;
  • polyurethane;
  • solvent-based nitrolacquer.

The latter type is not suitable for use on wood: the composition of such a varnish is bad for wood. But polyurethane varnish is durable and resistant to mechanical damage, therefore it is excellent for our task, although it is quite expensive.

The choice of varnish or paint depends on the type of door and its location in the room.

If painting with varnish is not suitable for you, refer to paints. Their choice on the modern market is huge both in color and composition, and it will not be difficult for you to give the door any look. The paints are matte, glossy or emphasizing the woody structure. The main thing is to pay attention to what basis the product is made - oil or alcohol. Nitro paint is also suitable.

There are also oils containing wax for painting wood surfaces. This product can be transparent or colored, it will give the wood a soft silkiness. The disadvantage of this material is its high cost.

Compositions for doors of different types

When choosing a paint product, pay attention to the condition of the door leaf. As already mentioned, for an old door that had to be restored, a lacquer coating, under which the entire surface is visible, is categorically not suitable. In this case, it is better to use paint. The varnish will look good on a new door.

The modern market offers a large selection paints and varnishes for wooden doors

Most often used in such works are 2 types of paints and varnishes.

  1. Acrylic compositions based on water dispersion. Easy to apply and fit well, as if covering the surface with a thin layer of plastic. When dry, there is no strong smell.
  2. Solvent-based alkyd paints and varnishes. When painting, they penetrate deep into the wood structure, dry quickly. Resistant to temperature fluctuations, have a water-repellent effect. The disadvantages include a pungent smell when drying.

Taking these points into account, we can conclude that acrylic compounds are well suited for interior doors and dry rooms. Alkyd paints are best used on entrance doors or in damp areas.

If you plan to paint the door in one color, then the choice of the coloring material will be based on the above criteria. But if you have a door leaf with a design, take into account the following:

Please note: paint and paint must be applied on a completely dry surface. Otherwise, the paint layer on damp wood will begin to peel off and flake off.

Preparing for the process

Arm yourself first necessary materials and tools so that you have everything at your fingertips during your workflow. You will need:

  • painting trolleys - 2 pcs. or 4 stools;
  • roller and bath for him;
  • putty knife;
  • damp rag;
  • sandpaper;
  • vacuum cleaner;
  • brush;
  • masking tape;
  • putty;
  • primer;
  • solvent;
  • paint or varnish;
  • flashlight for easy search of flaws on the door leaf.

The door structure consists not only of the canvas, and most often it completely needs painting, otherwise the door will be very different in color from the lintel and jambs. Painting work can be carried out in two ways: in a horizontal or vertical position.

  1. In the first case, remove the door leaf from the hinges and lay it on the trestles or stools. If you use an alkyd compound for painting, it is better to sit in the yard, on the balcony or terrace.
  2. In the second method, block the blade without removing it with wedges. Do this so that the brush has easy access to all the elements of the door. The lock will also keep the door open while it dries.

Try to dismantle all the hardware on the door

It will be more convenient to work with the removed canvas, but in some cases the second option is quite applicable. Remember to dismantle all hardware. If the hinges and handles are not removable, they can be wrapped with paper and fixed with tape, or even better, wrapped with foil and ensure it snugly adheres to the details. Cover the lock mechanisms with tape in a fixed position.

Preliminary processing

This process is multi-stage, and it is very important for the subsequent work. It is from proper preparation the surface of the door depends on how smoothly the paint will fall on it and how long it will last. Carry out the preparation according to the standard scheme.

Please note: in order to repair deep dents under an opaque paint, you can use an auto putty, it does not contain fiberglass. And if the natural solid has darkened over time under paint or varnish, you can lighten it with a solution of 1 part chlorine bleach in 3 parts water.

After you have prepared the door for further work, wipe it, removing dust and fine debris, dry it thoroughly and start painting.

Painting technology

When painting the door, you can use either a brush or a roller. The brush can leave streaks and streaks. Therefore, before work, fluff it up properly to get rid of fallen and poorly fixed hairs, and during painting, use a brush along and across the surface to smooth out irregularities.

If you are using a roller, roll out the paint well so that it lies in a thin layer. Do not press down on the roller too hard during the process, and roll it over the surface with light, even movements.

The surface of the door will not be painted evenly the first time, the wood will absorb most of the paint. Re-staining will be required, and possibly more than one.

It is very important to pre-clean the white door from dirt and dust.

This method is great if you want to paint a door in White color... The main thing is to clean the surface with special care so that no dirt or dust remains on it.

Simple door leaf

This is the simplest job, so we'll cover it first. However, you need to be careful not to leave visible stains and smudges on the door.

For such work, you can purchase a special spray: it will greatly facilitate the process. But for painting one or two doors, the purchase of such a device would be financially impractical. Therefore, you can easily get by with a roller and panel brush.

The staining scheme depends on the type of door structure.

  1. The panel door is painted in 3 steps. The easiest way to do this is to use a roller: it will apply the paint evenly and will not leave hairs. Start covering from the upper left corner of the door, moving to the right side. When the canvas is finished to the end, leave it to dry as long as the instructions for the coloring agent require. The second stage of painting is carried out in the longitudinal direction, the third - in the opposite direction from the first method.
  2. For a paneled door, it is better to use a brush. Walk it along the grooves in the canvas, while trying to avoid excess paint. Finish the painting with a roller, using the scheme for the panel door.

Painting with stain

If you decide to paint your door with wood stain, prepare it and lightly dampen it. Thus, moisture will not be absorbed into the wood, and the dye will lie flat, despite the liquid consistency. Everything that is located horizontally, paint first along the fibers, then across, and at the end of the work again in the longitudinal direction.

If you decide to paint the door in an upright position and have not removed it from its hinges, start covering the jambs and the canvas from below so that splashes do not fall on the unpainted surface. This is especially important if you plan to varnish your door.

Wood fibers are straightened by absorbing water-soluble stain. After the first layer has dried, sand the surface with a zero-abrasive paper, clean and coat again with stain.

After drying, the wood surface will become lighter than when stained. Apply the dye several times to make the color more vibrant.

Alcohol stain does not straighten wood fibers, so you don't have to sand the door after applying it. In addition, it dries up in half an hour. But water-soluble stain is more popular because it is considered safer and more non-toxic.

Imitation wood

This method is applicable to any surface. As for wood, on old doors that have been deeply restored, it may also be necessary to apply a pattern as close as possible to a pronounced natural one.

There is another way to imitate a wood pattern on the door. To do this, you need a special brush, which you can buy at hardware store... Soft wood fibers are brushed with a brush-like motion. Due to changes in the structure, curls will spontaneously appear, creating the illusion of wood. After the surface is dry, it needs to be sanded.

How to paint a wooden door - video

Every detail is important in a harmonious interior. This applies not only to furniture and decor, but also to elements such as doors. Without these components, not a single modern dwelling... The door leaf should be not only functional, but also attractive in order to successfully complement the existing ensemble. Often the owners want to renovate their doors, but do not know how to do it correctly. Today we will talk about how best to paint this element of the home to make it even more attractive.

Advantages

It's no secret that over time, all the details in the interior wear out and gradually lose their original appearance. Better, more reliable materials age slightly more slowly, while inexpensive and unnatural materials age much earlier. Noticing that the interior or front door to the dwelling has lost its visual appeal, many owners want to return it to its former attractiveness.

A good solution to this issue is the usual painting. Fortunately, modern manufacturers produce coatings that easily fit not only on wooden canvases, but also on metal or plastic surfaces, so the optimal paint can be selected for any material.

However, often people turn to such an update of the door structure, not because it has worn out and requires restoration, but in order to slightly revive the interior and bring fresh colors into it.

Do not underestimate the role of the door leaf and its colors in the interior, as often such elements radically change the tone of the ensemble and give it a particular style.

Paints and varnishes are good not only for decorating and updating doors, but also for the choice of shades. Today in stores you can find mixtures of not only classic and neutral, but also the most unexpected and even acidic tones. This suggests that the modern consumer is free to shape absolutely any interior, from classics to insane avant-garde.

Many users prefer painting doors also due to the fact that everyone can cope with this process. It is not too difficult and does not require special knowledge and skills. It is enough to know only the basic basics of painting door leaves.

Product materials

Almost all types of modern interior doors are suitable for painting. High-quality wood or veneer canvases are ideal.

There are many attractive and durable hardwood models on the furniture market today, which include:

  • Beech. Otherwise, this breed is called the "tree of kings" because of its unsurpassed quality and solid appearance.
  • Oak. Oak doors boast enviable durability, reliability and a unique shade. This is especially true of the luxurious bog oak.
  • Nut. This attractive wood has an interesting moire pattern and rich dark shade.
  • Ash. In terms of strength, this material is comparable to oak, but it costs much less.
  • Linden. This wood has a light shade and is inexpensive.

No less popular canvases from coniferous tree species, such as:

  • Spruce. This material is not very durable, but it is ideal for an interior door.
  • Pine. Pine canvases have a pleasant and calm color. In addition, these doors are inexpensive and attractive.
  • Cedar. Cedar doors are highly reliable and resistant to mold.
  • Alder. Alder doors in their characteristics are in many ways similar to pine models, but they are more resistant to temperature extremes and exposure to humid air.

Hybrid products are also suitable for painting, which include a frame made of veneered or solid pine wood or an inexpensive canvas made of materials such as MDF, fiberboard or chipboard. Often such products are covered with veneer.

In addition, attractive veneered specimens can be shielded or paneled. Paneled structures are ideal for installation as a traditional piece of furniture. Conventional shield options can be used in a slightly different way.

Due to their smooth surface, they are often used to create hidden interior paintings... Otherwise, such elements are called "invisible" doors.

You can paint not only wooden, but also plastic door... But if you want to achieve the most persistent and attractive result, then you will have to stock up on special spray paint in cans. For example, this could be the popular Amphibolin 2000 formulation.

How to paint in the apartment with your own hands?

The choice of a suitable paint and varnish coating mainly depends on what kind of appearance of the door leaf you plan to get as a result, on the experience in such matters and, of course, on the conditions in which the painting will be carried out. If you are going to process a door outside the walls of a dwelling, then you must choose an odorless finish so as not to harm the health of the people around.

There are several types of enamel paints on the market that can be used to treat the door and its constituent components:

  • Acrylic. Such paint perfectly hides any defects on the painted surface. It also protects the material from dampness and moisture, and the formation of mold. It can also be used for glass. Today, many companies produce high-quality acrylic compounds that are environmentally friendly.
  • Alkyd. Such a composition is very similar to traditional oil paint, but has more significant protective characteristics that can last up to 4 years.
  • Polyurethane. This paint is highly durable and durable. It perfectly fills the pores of natural wood, which protects it from moisture and pollution.

  • Water-dispersive and water-based. These paints are quick-drying and do not contain substances harmful to health. In addition, they do not emit a pungent odor and are durable.
  • Powder and hammer. These options have appeared on the market relatively recently. They are not designed for wood finishes. As a rule, metal canvases are covered with them.
  • Wax and oils. These specific finishes are more commonly purchased for wood finishes. They allow the material to "breathe" and have a restorative effect on damaged surfaces. However, wax coatings are not quick-drying, therefore it will be possible to use the treated door only after 3-4 days.

For patination, which is fashionable today, the following compositions are used:

  • Acrylic paint in a wide range of colors.
  • Bituminous, giving a dark brown tint.
  • A waxy patina that can have both natural and blue-green tones.
  • Shellac patina available in golden to red colors.
  • An oil patina that is rarely used in modern interiors.

Required tools

To paint a door leaf, you must have the following materials and items:

  • "Trestles" or other similar structures for laying the door in a suspended position;
  • brush;
  • dry brush;
  • fine fleece roller;
  • special pallet for paint;

  • hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • sandpaper;
  • spray gun;
  • craquelure for door decoration.

Which color should you choose?

Modern manufacturers produce paintwork in a variety of colors. Thanks to such a rich assortment, homeowners will be able to easily implement even the most non-trivial design ideas.

Nowadays, there are several leading trends in the color of interior door structures:

  • soft and delicate shades, light notes of blue, peach, grassy, pink or lavender;
  • dark dense shades of brown, cherry, blue and chocolate;
  • rich and juicy shades (red, orange and yellow);
  • noble tones imitating natural wood such as wenge, oak, walnut or cedar.

In addition, many designers recommend that owners adhere to the following guidelines when choosing the right color.

  • Deep and dark shades such as cherry, red walnut or dark chocolate bring luxurious and elegant notes to the living room interior.
  • As for discreet light colors, they are best suited for cozy bedrooms or children's rooms, as they create a peaceful and calm atmosphere.
  • If the room has a beautiful white bedroom set, then it is better to choose the door in a similar color scheme. It can also be supplemented with gilded panels.

  • V wooden house canvases made of solid wood treated with transparent oil impregnation will look ideal.
  • For a classic ensemble with antique interior items, you can purchase an interesting artificially aged model made of wood.
  • As for the door frame, it should be slightly lighter or darker than the main wall decoration.

Painting technology of a new canvas

Previously untreated wood intensively absorbs moisture. If, for example, you put such a cloth in a bath without treating it with special impregnations, then it will swell pretty soon and simply stop closing reliably. This suggests that before directly installing and painting a wooden door, it must be properly prepared.

All work must be carried out in a closed room so that dust and dirt do not get on the treated canvas.

First, the door without any fittings is laid on a flat and stable surface. As a rule, at the stage of production, the canvases undergo preliminary grinding, but often they still have minor roughness or protrusions, so it is worth going through again grinder or sandpaper.

Before painting, the canvas must be primed. First, all the grooves of the canvas are covered with it, and then even surfaces.

Since the structures will be in a horizontal position, drips and drops will not appear on them, and the primer will be absorbed as evenly as possible. After that, you need to let the product dry to the end and carry out a second processing.

Now you can go directly to painting the canvas. It is better to cover panel models with a roller, and paneled ones - with a narrow brush. Make sure the paint is not too thick. If its consistency is that, then it should be diluted with a solvent.

Do not decorate the door with a too thick layer of paint, since the product can only deteriorate from such actions. Depending on the coverage characteristics, 2-4 coats of paint may be required. Keep in mind that each of them must dry completely before applying the next. While the door leaf itself dries, you need to process the opening.

If a stain is chosen to finish the new canvas, then the primer does not need to be used.

Drastic color change

A previously primed and painted door can be repainted on its own at home. First you need to spend all the necessary training... First of all, the old paint layer is removed. With the complete removal of the previous layers, the door can be repainted in any color, be it classic brown, white or black, as well as brighter and more colorful tones. However, in the second case, you should check how appropriate the paint will look in the room. To do this, you need to apply it on a couple of boards and attach it to the door leaf.

After these procedures have been carried out, you can start repainting the door according to the algorithm:

  • The canvas needs to be putty. You can purchase a special compound for wooden doors.
  • Then the putty is dried.

  • After that, you need to sand the surface with sandpaper.
  • Now we apply a layer of primer, oil or wax (you can choose fireproof materials).
  • Doors need to be painted from the top corner.
  • Small elements are painted with a brush.
  • The paint should only be applied in the direction of the wood grain.

Now you need to let the canvas dry completely. It is desirable that it be in a horizontal position.

How to remove old paint?

To soften previous paint layers, you can apply a chemical wash coat and let it soak into the surface. This job can take about 2 hours. After a while, the old paint will begin to bubble and move away from the door. It can be qualitatively removed with a spatula until the canvas is completely cleaned.

Also, to remove the old paint, it can be warmed up with a building hair dryer and removed with a spatula. As long as the finish is well heated, it remains as soft as possible and much easier to remove.

Both of these methods can be used. Especially often this method is used in order to clean oil paint applied in many layers.

You can degrease a wooden door with a metal brush and fine or coarse sandpaper. In especially difficult cases, a plane or aggressive chemical compositions... Plastic models are degreased with acetone and white spirit.

How to quickly putty?

Putty is the final stage of preparing the door for painting and does not take much time. Depending on the condition of the canvas, it can be filled in whole or in part. After that, you need to wait until the composition is completely dry and you should go over the door with sandpaper (over the entire surface or in separate areas). There is no need to rush here so as not to harm the canvas.

Two-color staining

If you want to paint a door using two different colors, such as contrasting black and white, then you first need to apply a base coat. In this case, white. After that, you should wait for it to dry completely and process those areas that will be painted in a different shade. Also, as you work, you can glue certain surfaces with adhesive tape so that paint of a different color does not get on them.

After drying and processing the base layer, you can re-stick the tapes on it and start painting the previously closed areas in black.

Making a semi-antique door

If you like vintage style and an antique look, then the door can be decorated with patina.

This procedure takes place in several stages:

  • first, the surface of the door is processed with an iron brush;
  • then a white primer is applied;
  • after it dries, a gray patina is applied;
  • its top layer will need to be removed with a sanding bar;
  • at the end, you need to apply at least two layers of enamel.

Repainting an old door is a quick and inexpensive way to freshen up the look of your home and add new ones. bright colours into the setting. To make a high-quality, durable coating, you need to go through several stages of work. It doesn't matter if you repaint here interior doors or input, the technology is the same. Although it should be borne in mind that the adverse effects on external doors are much more serious, and it is necessary to choose a paint specifically for external doors.

  • In most cases, the door is removed from its hinges before painting and laid horizontally on the trestle. It is much more convenient to work in this way and a more uniform paint application is achieved. You can, of course, paint the door without removing it from the hinges, only in this case you need to tape the hinges and lock handles with tape, and paint the door open.

  • We put the door removed from the hinges on the trestle and remove the hinges and locks. Now it is necessary to determine the strength of the old coating, further actions depend on this, whether it is necessary to remove old paint completely or limited cosmetic repairs... If the paint peels off and falls off in pieces, then you will have to clean the entire surface. This can be done in two ways: Heat the coating with a building hair dryer and cut off with a spatula; in another version, the old layer is soaked with a special wash and is also removed with a spatula.
  • Next, you need to seal the cracks with putty and vyshkurit. If the door is in good condition, then we just sand the old paint to get a rough surface, otherwise the new paint may lie poorly and peel off quickly. After skhkurivaniya carefully sweep the dust, it is better to blow it out with a compressor.

  • Apply a primer as the first layer, it can be a special composition, or a liquid diluted base paint. The primer must be thinner in order to penetrate the inside of the door leaf and provide a more durable coating with the base paint. The primer is the same type as the paint of your choice. The paint can be oil, latex or acrylic. For exterior doors, oil paints are more often used, as they are more reliable.

  • We start painting with a brush along the recesses of the panels, it is best to roll flat door parts with a roller, so the layer is more uniform. Do not forget to dry each layer of primer and paint for the time indicated on the can and only then apply the next layer.

The minimum number of layers: primer + paint, more often primer + 2 layers of paint are used, in some cases three coats of paint will be needed, this is if the paint is liquid and does not paint over the old coating. What else to do with your own hands, look.

  • When the last coat of paint is dry, you can apply a clear polyurethane varnish on top. The varnish will give a good glossy shine and additional protection surface. After the first layer of varnish has dried, it is necessary to go through the entire surface with a fine micron sandpaper and then apply a second finishing layer. You can also do it yourself.

Suppose you have good-quality doors, but you can clearly see from them that the canvas is no longer new or, on the contrary, you have acquired a new, unfinished, wooden canvas and want to give it a luxurious look. In both cases, painting the doors will save the situation, and further, we will tell you in detail how to paint the door with your own hands in the two above-mentioned options, plus we will analyze what paint to paint the doors with in a given situation.

In order to paint a door with your own hands, you do not need high qualifications.

In this case, door paint is not the only option, you can just as well cover the door with a good varnish or wax. The technique of applying these compositions is almost the same, while the visual effect can differ dramatically.

Varnish or paint

The use of door varnish is fully justified when the door leaf is new. Old canvases can also be varnished, but they should not have large (visible) traces of putty or stains not typical for wood. Plus, preparing old doors for varnishing is much more difficult, we will dwell on this issue in more detail a little later.

As for gloss, there are matte, semi-gloss and glossy varnishes. In terms of color, these compounds are divided into colored and transparent, and the color group is also partly transparent, it just has a peculiar shade. In addition, no one bothers you to varnish the pre-painted door, this option is possible, only the compositions must be compatible with each other.

There is important nuance- if you do not have a good spray gun at home, then we do not recommend you to take up the application of glossy varnish with your own hands, in artisanal conditions it is often not realistic to achieve high-quality gloss.

Door paint is almost a win-win option, especially if you are far from painting tricks. Here you can choose the color, what paint to paint the doors, which means that it is possible to adapt to a certain type of design. It takes the same amount of time for the paint to dry as for the varnish, in this case it all depends on the type of composition.

Modern paints are good for painting any, especially old doors with your own hands.

If varnish, then what?

The choice here is quite wide, it all depends on the ambitions of the owner, the place of installation of the doors and the size of the budget.

  • The most affordable option in terms of cost is considered to be oil varnishes. Such compositions are made on the basis of drying oil with the addition of a film-forming hardener. Varnishes are quite stable and harmless from an environmental point of view, but they can dry up to 3 days;

The main advantage of oil varnishes is their low price.

  • The next contender in the budget niche is alkyd varnish. The basis is alkyd resins mixed with an organic solvent. In terms of performance, alkyd compounds are better than oil ones, but they also dry for a long time, plus the organic solvent "smells harsh";

Alkyd varnishes are more suitable for internal works.

  • We do not recommend nitro varnishes for home doors, of all the advantages there are only a short drying period (up to 2 hours) and a luxurious shine. But the doors will not shine under nitro lacquer for a long time, because such compositions are not resistant to ultraviolet light and mechanical damage. And most importantly, nitro lacquers during drying are very toxic and "stink wildly";

Nitrolac is considered the fastest drying.

  • Urethane-alkyd or as they are also called "Yacht" varnishes will be an excellent choice if required painting the front door... They do not fade in the sun, are indifferent to humidity and are resistant to mechanical damage, but the price is high;

Yacht varnish is considered universal.

  • A good alternative to yacht varnish would be a polyurethane compound. Considering that neither the entrance, let alone the interior doors will be constantly "watered" with sea water, then the polyurethane varnish is close to ideal, especially for the entrance doors. Plus it costs much less than a yacht;

Polyurethane varnish is one of the most durable.

  • At the moment, acrylic varnishes are almost ideal for both interior and entrance doors. These compositions are water-dispersed, in other words, water acts as a solvent, respectively, they do not smell when dried. Acrylic compounds cannot be called cheap, but there are absolutely no environmental claims to them, plus they are breathable.

Acrylic compounds are considered completely harmless.

Choosing paint

The range of paints that are suitable for doors is slightly poorer, but in general, the list and performance characteristics are similar.

Oil paint for full painting of doors is now practically not used. True, if we are talking about old doors in the utility room, which need repainting to repaint the old canvas oil paint would be an acceptable solution. Firstly, before the doors were mainly painted with oil paint, which means that there will be no problem of rejection of the compositions. Secondly, such an "update" will cost a penny.

Alkyd wood enamel is an excellent low budget choice. It is suitable for both entrance and interior doors, and it feels equally well in wet and dry rooms. There are only 2 problems here - smell and a long drying period from 1 to 3 days.

Alkyd enamel is considered one of the most acceptable options for painting doors.

If there are small children in the apartment and they cannot be taken out for several days while the renovation is underway, then the most the best solution there will be an acrylic coating. The fact is that acrylic paint for wood is perfect. In residential premises, it looks luxurious, does not burn, is harmless and dries in about a day.

If you plan to paint your door first, and then varnish the canvas, keep in mind that the base of the paint and the base of the varnish must be the same. For example, for acrylic paint you need to take acrylic varnish, etc. Otherwise, there is a high probability of rejection, the doors will simply peel off.

Acrylic paint for doors is perfect.

Can I use impregnation

In the wake of the enthusiasm for all natural things, some owners are trying to completely abandon synthetic dyes and treat wood with oil and wax impregnations. A good option, but if you make a completely natural impregnation of beeswax and linseed oil, it will be very expensive.

  • Linseed oil - 40%;
  • Turpentine - 30%;
  • Beeswax - 30%;
  • Rosin - 5% of the total mass.

For doors, you can make the composition cheaper, it contains 55% of ordinary paraffin and 40% of gasoline, plus the same 5% of rosin. And for those who do not want to mess with self-manufacturing impregnation for doors, ready-made compositions are sold, but the level of naturalness of these compositions depends on the decency of the manufacturer, because there are no GOSTs for such products.

Not everyone wax impregnation for wood are made from natural ingredients.

Door staining technology

Do-it-yourself painting of new and old doors is approximately similar, but there are still small differences, so we will consider these 2 options separately. Let's start with the tool.

Tool

To paint a wooden door correctly, one brush and desire is not enough, you need at least a minimum set of high-quality tools.

  • Brushes - wide for large sectors of the canvas and narrow for hard-to-reach places;
  • Roller - it is not advisable to take foam rubber, it leaves small bubbles on the canvas, it is better to take a roller with a pile of 5 mm;
  • The sander is perfect option if it is not there, then you will have to be content with a block with an emery stretched over it;
  • Spatulas - rubber and metal;
  • Screwdriver or screwdriver set.

The final result largely depends on the quality of the tool.

Painting an old canvas

From the type of coloring agent how to paint old door, it does not depend especially strongly, it does not matter what kind of paint you took, the main thing is not to make mistakes in the preparation and coloring itself.

Before painting the old doors, they need to be properly prepared, but first, it is highly desirable to remove the canvas from its hinges and lay it on the trestle or on the table. The point here is not so much the convenience of work, but rather the fact that there will be no drips in the horizontal position when painting.

The doors must first be removed and laid horizontally.

The next number is the dismantling of all fittings, that is, handles, awnings, lock pads and so on. If something does not come off or you just do not want to take it off, then this part must be sealed with masking tape or wrapped in foil.

It is advisable to dismantle the fittings before painting.

  • Most safe way cleaning is the use of a sander. You can, of course, try to clean off the old paint with emery by hand, but very few people can do such a labor feat;
  • If you warm up the old paint with a building hair dryer, then it can be easily and efficiently removed with a steel spatula, although this method requires a building hair dryer;

Usage construction hair dryer gives one of the best results.

  • There is an option to clean off the paint with a steel scraper, but after that you will have to grind the canvas well, because there will be a lot of scratches;
  • On the market, paint removers are sold, you apply the composition to the canvas and after a while you clean everything off with a spatula. The option is acceptable, but such washes are very harmful, plus they are toxic and smell harsh, so the expediency of using them for home doors is a big question.

Some masters advise using drill bits with metal cord brushes to remove paint. Indeed, such a method exists, but it is used for artificial aging of wood. The cord brush selects soft fibers from the solid, leaving only the veins on top. If this decor suits you, you can try, but your doors will definitely not look newer.

The processing of an array with a cord-brush is used only for artificial aging of wood.

When the paint is removed, take the wood putty in the color of the solid wood and seal up all the small cracks with a rubber spatula, and then grind it again with fine emery.

You can bleach old wood with chlorine bleach, 1 part of whiteness is 3 parts of water.

Chlorine bleach (whiteness) can be used to bleach wood.

If the door is paneled (prefabricated canvas), then first paint over the grooves and shaped parts with a small brush, and then you need to "walk" along all the planes with a roller or a wide brush. Only the brush must be combed out before use so that all the hairs that do not hold well will fall out.

When painting well with a roller, it is better to work on planes.

Important: after the first staining, the pile rises on the tree, visually it is almost imperceptible, and the plane becomes rough to the touch. The pile is removed with a couple of strokes with a thin emery, but this must be done.

The doors are painted 2 - 3 times, each next time it is applied only after the previous one has dried, and in order for the composition to lie exactly, the direction of movement of the brush must be alternated, that is, the first time we paint along the canvas, the second across and the third again along.

Painting new doors

If the door is not painted, then the stage of removing the old paint disappears. But it is in any case necessary to grind the doors before finishing, believe me, there are enough chips and a burr there.

Most often, new wooden doors are varnished, because it is simply a pity to hide such beauty behind a layer of colored paint. Before processing, pine doors must be well wiped with acetone, so you will remove the resin from the canvas. If the color of the wood suits you, then you can start applying the first coat of varnish.

For those who wish to emphasize the texture of the wood and change the shade, there are stains. You just need to choose a shade and apply the stain with a brush to the canvas. After the canvas is dry, you can start applying wax or varnish.

The stain gives the wood a brighter look.

When waxing, 2 layers are enough, and after a couple of days, when the composition is absorbed, you will need to polish the canvas with felt by hand. The varnish can be applied up to 7 layers, here, the more layers, the better the door will look, but there should be at least 3 such layers. And do not forget to remove the pile with emery after the stain or the first layer of the composition.

It is realistic to paint or paint the doors with your own hands, but you should take into account all those small nuances that were described above. In the video in this article, experienced masters give their recommendations, do not hesitate, you will definitely succeed.

If desired, the old door can be completely reanimated.

With long-term use door leaves and frames lose their attractiveness as a result of wear or expiration of the decorative cover.

Types of paints

Currently, there is a huge selection of paints for painting wood. They are qualitatively subdivided into transparent and opaque. The first option is used when it is necessary to preserve the natural color of the wood and the visibility of the fiber structure. These include stains and impregnations that protect wood from insects and fungi.

Note!

They can add a little tonality to the natural color, making the look more presentable.

The second option - opaque paint is more in demand, since it allows you to achieve maximum compliance with the interior design of the room. These can be enamels and compositions based on acrylic, polyurethane, alkyds and oils.

Which paint to choose?

For interior work, acrylic enamels are most often used. They allow you to obtain optimal viscosity for ease of use with a brush: it spreads well, forming a thin uniform layer and is able to maintain rich color throughout the entire service life. It does not have a pungent odor and therefore even allergy sufferers can paint. The paint for external doors is selected based on the temperature characteristics of the climate, air humidity and the amount of precipitation. In such cases, alkyd paint is simply irreplaceable, as it increases resistance to temperature extremes, moisture and sunlight. The paint can dry much faster than other compounds. However, when working with it, you should use individual means protection respiratory tract because it is toxic.

Remove the hardware before painting.

Preparatory work

Before painting, it is advisable to remove the door from its hinges and place it on a horizontal stable surface. It is advisable to cover it with paper or oilcloth so that dirt and dust do not fall on the canvas. Then, using an industrial hair dryer with a wide nozzle, peel off the old paint to the wood. The old paint is heated with a hot stream of air until it swells, after which it is easily brushed off. In hard-to-reach places, the nozzle is removed and the site is heated, after which a layer of paint is removed with a knife or small. Upon completion of work, sanding is carried out or.

To shoot the door or not?

It is convenient to paint the doors in the removed position, since the paint does not run off, drips do not form, there is access to all cracks and inconvenient places. It is possible to assess the condition of the canvas more objectively and, if necessary, replace the problematic parts. In addition, there will be no acrid smell of solvent, paint composition and varnish in the room. The time spent on dismantling is fully justified, since financial resources are saved for painting doors that are obviously unsuitable for operation, and it will also become possible to carry out work in any convenient place. However, if the canvas is new, and painting is carried out only in order to change the color shade, then it can be painted right on the spot, having previously fixed the open position of the door.

Irregularities need to be putty

Close up small defects in the canvas

Hide before painting a wooden door possible defects, such as cracks, chips and places, damage by pests. A putty is taken and applied to problem areas with a spatula in small quantities... Then it is carefully leveled. After drying, sanding is carried out with "zero". The surface is cleaned with a dry soft cloth to remove dust and then washed out. It should be noted that only small defects can be hidden this way. In the event of rotten areas or severe cracks, it is recommended that a suitable part be made of the same type of wood and replaced.

What primer should I use?

Wood is imperatively necessary to improve water resistance, increase adhesion, especially of dense wood species, impregnate the outer layer to reduce paint costs. Before painting an old wooden door with an opaque paint, apply alkyd primers and alkyd-based compounds diluted with water.

Note!

The color of the primer should differ from the base color by a tone or a semitone in the light side, so as not to affect the outer coating.

Under the transparent layer, use primers on oil and water based possessing disinfectants, insecticidal, etc. In color and type, they should have a high affinity for the decorative coating.

Performing monochromatic painting

The most simple option painting the canvas and the box in one color. The brush must be fluffed before use in order to remove excess hairs and give softness. After that, painting is carried out in three stages. At the first stage, the ends of the door are covered with a layer of paint, starting from the upper corners and ending with the lower, longitudinal movements of the brush. At the second stage, the plane of the canvas is painted from left to right. Then the paint should dry according to the instructions for use. After drying, a second layer of paint is applied in the longitudinal direction from top to bottom. If the paint is partially absorbed, then a third layer can be applied to obtain a rich color.

Multi-tone application

For interiors with complex elements decor may require application of several layers of different colors. Take scotch tape and glue the entire surface, which should not be covered by the main color. After drying, glue the painted parts and apply paint to the remaining places. Paint front door in the nursery, it is not enough in several colors and you have to create complex drawings. First, stencils are made, with an adhesive applied on the back. Staining is carried out in the main color, and when the paint dries, a stencil is set and painted in additional tones. The disadvantage of this method is the outward manifestation of the color of the substrate. Therefore, such patterns are selected so that the background is lighter, and the subsequent layers are darker. This option is non-standard for painting wooden canvases, since they have a natural pattern, but is the simplest implementation of a complex pattern for doing it yourself. The sequence of work is as follows:

  1. The canvas is painted completely in yellow by the method of one-color painting in one or two layers.
  2. The liquid soap is evenly applied to all surfaces with a brush.
  3. A layer of dark paint is applied, imitating wood fibers.
  4. Soap is washed off.

Conclusion

Before painting an interior wooden door, it is necessary to determine the operating conditions, requirements for surface quality and colors. But before that, the front part of the canvas and the box should be processed accordingly. This will be a guarantee of successful work and will significantly increase the service life of the door.
