The Spaniards, who were the first to “develop” Central America, estimated that there were about 40,000 stone pyramids, some of them reaching a height of 60 m (i.e. the height of a 20-story building). Yes, there were distinctive civilizations on the American continent, after which there remained pyramids topped with temples and platforms for astronomical observations. These civilizations did not know domestic animals, did not know the wheel, iron, copper, bronze. And yet, in their skill, they were not far behind the masters from the banks of the Nile.

Descendants of the people who built the pyramids in Central America, mainly on the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) in the 1st and 2nd millennia AD. e., and now live in Mexico, Guatemala and British Honduras. These are the Mayans, of whom there are 2.6 million people. However, today's Mayans know little about their magnificent past, which began at least 1000 BC. e. and ended in the middle of the 15th century, when the Mayan cities, weakened by internecine struggle, became the prey of their Aztec neighbors.

But most of all, the Spanish conquerors, the conquistadors, who throughout the 16th century are to blame for the death of the Mayan culture. enslaved this freedom-loving people, destroying its architectural monuments, burning manuscripts written in peculiar hieroglyphic signs. The conquistadors were exceptionally cruel. It is known that the governor of Yucatan, who began the conquest of this peninsula in 1526, had the custom of feeding his dogs the meat of killed Indians... Mayan cultural monuments were also destroyed by priests led by the first archbishop of Mexico, Don Juan de Zumaraga. By order of Diego de Landa, who later became the second archbishop of this country, in 1562 all the collected Mayan handwritten books were burned during a solemn auto-da-fé, as Landa himself wrote about it: “We found a large number of books with them in these letters. And since they had nothing that did not contain the superstition and lies of the demon, we burned them all.”

Over time, apparently, Monseigneur da Landa’s conscience awoke and in his book “Reports on Affairs in Yucatan” he provided a lot of information about the culture and history of the Mayans, described the elements of their writing, cited several hieroglyphs and gave their translation.

By chance, only three Mayan manuscripts have survived, apparently donated by the first conquerors to the Spanish king Charles V. One of them is in the Dresden Library, the second in Paris, the third in Madrid. As a result of archaeological excavations, about 150 Mayan cities were discovered. It turned out that the Mayans, on one occasion or another, erected steles - stone pillars covered with hieroglyphs (about 1500 of them were discovered). Hieroglyphic inscriptions were also found on columns, on the walls of buildings, vessels and objects of applied art. More than 5,000 such inscriptions are already known. Only one “staircase of hieroglyphs” in Copan contains over 2000 characters.

Mayan months and years

Like other peoples of the world, the Mayans needed a calendar to establish the timing of their agricultural work, especially sowing, on the timeliness of which the harvest depended. It is known that at first the Mayans divided the year into two parts - the dry season (which was ruled by the Sun God) and the rainy season (which was “ruled” by the Rain God). The Mayans waited for the May (according to our calendar) full moon and, when accumulations of dark clouds foreshadowed rain, they began sowing, mainly corn: a hole was made with a sharpened stick into which several seeds were thrown. Within four years, the soil was depleted, so it was necessary to abandon old plots of land and look for new ones, often at a great distance from the previous place of residence.

The Mayan calendar is based on the Kin day. They were united into “blocks” and there were several such “blocks”:

1) a nine-day week, each day of which had its own name;

2) thirteen days - a “week” of 13 kin; each day of the “week” was designated by its serial number in it;

3) twenty days, or vinal - “month” of 20 kin. The word "vinal" also meant "man". Thus, when the Mayans wanted to say “twenty,” they said “one person” (having 20 fingers and toes). Each day in the month had its own name (Fig.).

In addition, days were designated by numbers from 0 to 19. As will be seen from what follows, when counting days in a year, there was a gap between the serial number of the day (date) in the month and its name. Therefore, we can actually talk about the existence of two 20-day months, i.e., about the independent counting of days in “twenties” (with numbers from 0 to 19) and the continuous change of 20 names when moving from one year to another (similar to how In our calendar there is a continuous change of names of seven days in weeks).

The twenty-day month is apparently the period of time from sowing to weeding the crops. And the names of his days, according to the remark of Yu. V. Knorozov, seem to remind of the most important thing at this time. These names and their meanings are given in table.

What is surprising is that the Mayans used not one, but several calendars at once, closely intertwining their dates. They had a year of 260 days (its conventional name is “tzol-kin”), a year of 360 days (“tun”) and a year of 365 days (“haab”). According to Mayan scholars, the 260-day period was originally the period from sowing to harvest. It consisted of thirteen 20-day “months” and... twenty 13-day “weeks”. Therefore, in such a year, the numbers of the week and the names of the days are repeated in a certain pattern, forming a complete cycle. In the distant past in the spring, Day 1 Imish (this designation says: on the first day of a 13-day week, on the first named day of a 20-day month) was a holiday that marked the beginning of the agricultural season. Later, after the reform of the calendar, the counting of days in a 260-day cycle began to be carried out continuously, and the holidays associated with it lost their correspondence with the seasonal change of field work.

The Tun year consisted of eighteen 20-day months (360 = 18*20). It is possible that this is how the ancient Mayans imagined the duration of the solar year. And even if over time they had to make sure that this was not so, the Mayans could no longer refuse the tun as a unit of time, because of its exceptional convenience. On the contrary, as we will see later, this year became the basis for counting days from the original date, the basic unit of Mayan chronology.

Almost every name of the Mayan months contains some allusion to a specific agricultural season, to one or another work that should be done in this season. So, in the Mayan calendar there were the months Pop - “ruler’s mat”, Vo - “frog”, Sip - “sin (shed blood while hunting)”, Sots - “bat”, Sec - “bending the cobs (corn)”, Shul - “end”, yashkin - “new sun”, Mol - “harvest”, Chen - “well”, Nash - “new (preparation for new crops?)”, Sak - “white (field after harvest?)” , Kekh - “deer (hunting season?)”, Mak - “cessation (of burning trees in new areas?)”, Kankin - “yellow sun (through the smoke of forest fires?)”, Muan - “cloudy”, Pash - “drum” ", Kayyab - "big rain", Kumhu - "the sound of a thunderstorm."

Unfortunately, it is difficult to establish when, according to our calendar, in this or that century began New Year Maya - zero Pop. Diego de Landa, citing in his book the names of the months and their images in hieroglyphic signs, reports that at the time of the conquest of Yucatan by the Spaniards, the beginning of the Mayan year fell on July 16.

Of course, the solar year is longer than the 360-day tun. Consequently, the names of the months could correctly reflect seasonal changes in nature if they were used in a 365-day year rather than a 360-day year. It was precisely this year - haab - that the Mayans used in their Everyday life. For this purpose, at the end of the year, in 18 months of 20 days each, they added 5 days, which were called “Vaayeb haab”, i.e. “spirit [sign] of the year”, or “Ishma kaba kin” - “days without a name”. In these holidays there was a change of ruler and, according to Mayan beliefs, power in heaven also passed to another god for a whole year.

Every four years haab (i.e. every 365X4 = 1460 days) the days of the month were repeated again, i.e. they fell on the same days of the month. Therefore, the Haab New Year began on one of four days: Kan, Muluk, Ish or Kavak, after which the four-year cycle began again.

There was another very important cycle in the Mayan calendar - 52 years. In fact, 365 X 52 = = 18,980 days. 73 Tzolkin also fit into this period of time, since 73X260 = 18,980. Thus, after 52 years of Haab, both the days and numbers of the month and the numbers of the 13-day week are completely repeated. This allows you to build a kind of perpetual calendar Maya, which is called the “calendar circle” (table).

In it, the numbers of the 13-day week are counted from top to bottom, columns from 1 to 13 correspond to the thirteen 20-day months of the Tzolkin cycle. To count the days in the Haab year, use the first five columns (1 to 5) again. By the way, in order for the New Year to actually begin on one of the four days mentioned above (Kan, Muluk, Ish and Kavak), the numbers in the “Years” columns of the table are moved compared to their position in the table from S.I. Seleshnikov’s book “History of the Calendar and chronology".

Let's check the effectiveness of this kind of timesheet calendar. Let the 0 (date) of the month Pop (i.e., New Year) fall on the day of Kan (the beginning of the 4-year cycle) and on the 4th of the 13-day week. According to Mayan tradition, this date was written as follows: 4 Can 0 Pop. The “Years I” column can be used to date all 18 months of the year, since they all have 20 days. However, the day designation in a 13-day week changes all the time from month to month. Therefore, for the second month of Vo we use the second column “numbers of the 13-day week”, etc., for the 14th month (Kan-kin) - again the first and for the 18th month of Kumhu - the fifth. This month ends with the 19th day in the “Years I” column, and in the sixth column with the 12th day of the week, Akbal, which will be written like this: 12 Akbal 19 Kumhu. Next in the Haab year is the five-day Waayeb. We count these five days, moving further down, but in the “Years II” column, to the number 0, corresponding to the day of Muluk and date 5 in the same column of numbers of the 13-day week. Thus, the New Year (0 Pop) will begin on the date 5 Muluk 0 Pop. The third New Year is found in the column “Years III” - 6 Ish 0 Pop; the fourth - in the column “Years IV” - 7 Kavak 0 Pop, the fifth - 8 Kan 0 Pop. As you can see, the name of the day was repeated, but the day of the week completely coincides with the name of the day and the day of the month only 52 years later.

Mayan chronology

Here, first of all, it is necessary to note that the Mayans used three signs to depict numbers: a dot for one, a dash for five, and an image of a shell for zero. Like the Europeans, the Mayans used a positional system for representing numbers, but on a base-20 basis, and wrote them from bottom to top. On the first bottom “shelf” of such a “shelf”, units (from 1 to 19) were written, on the second - twenties (numbers from 20 to 359), on the third - numbers from 360 to 360 * 19, the number 360 * 20 = 7200 takes its place place on the fourth “shelf” as an initial number of the 4th order, etc. In accordance with this, a tun year of 360 days and higher order cycles were used to count large periods of time:

The very names “baktun”, “pictun” (as well as the subsequent units - kalabtun, quinchiltun and alautun) were created artificially by researchers of Mayan culture.

Mayan inscriptions on steles, columns and walls of buildings usually begin with a date. According to Yu. V. Knorozov, the classical Mayan date includes the following components:

1. Introductory block, the meaning of which is still unknown.

2. A block inscribed in the middle of the introductory block (the so-called “patron of the month”). Each of the 18 months corresponds to one block.

3. The number of 360-day years (tuns) and days that have passed from the starting date.

4. Date of the 260-day cycle: the number of the 13th day and the name of the day of the 20th day.

5. The name of the day of the 9-day and the “nine-day” block.

6. Lunar date: the number of the lunar month, the number and name of the lunar month, the number of days in the lunar month (29 or 30).

7. Date of a 365-day year: the number and name of one of 18 twenty-day months or five additional days.

Here is one example - the inscription on lintel 21 in Yaxchilan. After the introductory block and the “patron of the month Iash” there is a date, when recording which higher order cycles in counting days are usually separated by a dot: 9.0.19.2.4 2 Kan - II day of a 9-day period - 27th day of the 3rd lunar month of such and such, consisting of 29 days - 2 Yasha. This means that from the start date 0.0.0.0.0. 9 baktuns 0 katuns 19 tuns 2 vinals and 4 days passed or 9 * 144,000 + 0 * 7200 + 19 * 360 + 2 * 20 + 4 = 1,302,884 days.

The Mayans accepted as the starting date: according to a 260-day cycle - 4 Ahab, according to a nine-day year - 1, according to a 365-day year - 8 Kumhu. So this start date is written as 0.0.0.0.0. 4 Ahab 8 Kumhu, which corresponds to 3113 BC. e.

Let's check whether the original date is written correctly in the 52-year cycle. To do this, first divide the found number of days by 260: 1,302,884:260=5011, remainder 24; 24 days after 4 Ahau, as can be seen from column 10 of table 21, there will be 2 Kan. Dividing 1,302,884 by 365, we find 3569 and the remainder is 199 = 9*20+ 19 - that’s 9 full months and another 19 days. To this balance it is necessary to add 12 days to complete the month of Kumhu, then 5 days for the five-day Waayeb, therefore, for subsequent months

There are 9 full months and 2 days left in the year. From the table we find that the 10th month is Yash.

If the resulting number of days, 1,302,884, is divided by 9 and the remainder is added to 1, we also obtain a day of 9 days. It is almost impossible to establish the lunar date, since each Mayan city had its own lunar calendar.

By the way, after dividing the number 1,302,884 by 365.25, we get 3567. Therefore, the inscription discussed above was made in 3567 - 3112 = 455 AD. e.

As for the question of the accuracy of the Mayan calendar, here is what Yu. V. Knorozov says about it: “Mayan astronomers knew that the actual length of the solar year is approximately a quarter of a day longer (and therefore in the modern Gregorian calendar an extra day is added every four of the year). However, the calendar did not provide for additional days. Without adjustments, the 365-day year would have been ahead of the actual solar year and would have gradually shifted with the seasons. Thus, from the Mayan date we know exactly how many days have passed, but we do not know how many actual solar years have passed.”

But if this was the case, then for every 40 years the beginning of the New Year shifted back by 10 days, for 400 years - by 97 days in relation to a certain astronomical moment (for example, the spring equinox).

Here is one example of how myths are created about the accuracy of the Mayan calendar. On the walls of the royal tomb in the Palenque pyramid it is written: “81 Moons make 2392 days.” The famous Norwegian ethnographer and archaeologist Thor Heyerdahl, dividing 2392 by 81, obtained a result that “gives them (the Mayans) a month of 29.53086 days, differing only by 24 seconds from its actual length.” But does this really indicate high level Mayan astronomical knowledge? Not at all. After all, as J. Hawkins noted, as a result of division it is impossible to obtain more significant digits than are contained in the most accurate number involved in the calculations, and therefore in the calculated duration of the lunar month only four digits can be considered accurate (i.e. 29.53 days).

Almost exactly the same calendar system was used by the Mayans' neighbors, the Aztecs. Interestingly, at the end of a cycle of 52 years, the Aztecs expected the “end of the world.” As M. Stingle tells in his book “Indians without Tomahawks” (M.: Progress, 1971), in the last five days of the cycle the Aztecs kept children and pregnant women locked up, all lights were extinguished, all household dishes without exception were supposed to be broken, all residents gathered on the hills. The Mayans used two calendars. In the first, the year always consisted of 260 days and was called “tzolkin,” and in the second, the “odd year” consisted of 365 days. The presence of two cycles resulted in the fact that each day had two names, for example, 3 akbal, 4 kumu. Because the two cycles were of different lengths, no specific double combination of day names was repeated during the 52 "odd" years and the 73 "Tzolkin" years. This period of time was commonly referred to as the "Aztec Age" or the "Calendar Circle". This calendar system was quite adequate for its purposes; it also had limitations. To cope with these difficulties, the Mayans developed another time counting system called Long Counting. With slight variations, they counted time in “kinas”, “uinals”, “tunas”, etc... Its principle looked like this: 20 kin days = 1 uinalu (20-day month), 18 uinals = 1 tuna (360-day year), 20 tuns = 1 katun (7200 days), 20 katuns = 1 baktun (144,000 days). Using the Long Count, the Mayans also kept a special account of the day. On stelae and other monuments, Mayan dates were written in two columns of hieroglyphs, read from left to right and top to bottom. The entire series began with an introductory hieroglyph and often ended with a date related to the lunar cycle and a mention of whichever of the Nine Night Lords reigned at that time. And between them there were dates expressed in baktuns, katuns, tuns, etc., plus the corresponding dates for “Tzolkin” (260 days) and “Haab” (365 days).
"Tzolkin" is a very ancient calendar and dates back to time immemorial. Some Mayan tribes in remote areas of the country still use it for ritual and magical purposes. And even more important role he played earlier. The tables of the Dresden Codex were supposed to give the priests not only information about future eclipses, but also how to relate them to the 260-day Tzolkin calendar. They compiled their tables based on 11,958 days, which almost exactly corresponds to the 46 year of Tzolkin (11,960 days). This fully corresponds to 405 lunar months (also 11960 days). The authors of the tables also compiled additions that corrected their basic data, which ensured their accuracy to one day for 4500 years. "Tzolkin" is based on a combination of 20 names of months with numbers from 1 to 13. But the counting is not carried out sequentially, as in our Gregorian calendar with months of 30 and 31 days. A cycle of 260 days does not have any practical meaning in earthly conditions, just as the calendar itself has no practical meaning with 13 days and 20 months, indicated by names and symbols that have nothing to do with the reality around us. Everything “falls into place” only in one case: the calendar was given to the Mayans from the outside by certain “gods” who were familiar with the wheel, and for whom the cycle of 260 days had some practical significance. “Gods” who were so educated that they were able not only to very accurately calculate the earthly year, but also to adapt its “inconvenient” duration to the integer counting system without loss of accuracy.

Three Mayan calendars
Mayans enjoyed the whole system from three calendars. The Tzolkin calendar cycle has only 260 days, or 20 months of 13 days. It had a domestic purpose. The Mayans calculated the almost exact length of the solar year - 365.242 days. Life after the Mayans

In only four Mayan manuscripts (so-called codices) found so far, information about the astronomical, cosmogonic and cosmological knowledge and ideas of this people dating back to different eras BC was discovered. Some of the confusion in the surviving astronomical and astrological information can be explained by the fact that the surviving manuscripts are incomplete, and most importantly, they are mostly simplified rural priestly “reference books.” A number of texts were also found on stone slabs-steles.

The astronomical basis of the classical Mayan calendar was complex. Firstly, it was a sunny tropical year (haab).
