DIY bed with side headboard. Beauty and comfort with your own hands: how to cover a bed with decorative fabric. Upgrading the back of the headboard

The main attribute of any bedroom is a place to sleep. In most cases, people sleep on beds, less often on sofas, etc. It is much more comfortable and pleasant to sleep on beds, so I want to devote a little more time to its arrangement.

Before starting work on making a soft headboard for a bed, you need to: make a drawing of the future design, purchase upholstery material, and prepare tools.

Appearance and decoration of the headboard

The appearance of the bed entirely depends on the preferences of the owner of the bed. Most often, beds are purchased ready-made in a store or made to order. But another popular way is the decorating process, where the headboard is decorated and created with your own hands. This method allows you to become the owner of a unique bed that only you have. And the unusual and unique appearance of the headboard will only be advantageous.

There are many different ways to decorate the head of a bed. The manufacturing process largely depends on the designer’s imagination and the flight of his ideas. There are cases when the most unexpected materials were used, and there were no restrictions on them - be it a metal sheet or an old tree. In good hands, any of them will look their best.

Materials and tools

Foam rubber for a soft headboard is cut out in accordance with the plywood profile.

The process of making a backrest is a very difficult task. But if you start work wisely and do it conscientiously, you can achieve very good results. Of course, it will be better if the operations are performed by a knowledgeable person. But it's never too late to start gaining new experience.

It is important to take care of everything you need before starting work.

So, you will need the following materials:

  1. The headboard is made of plywood with a thickness of approximately 8-12 mm.
  2. Foam rubber (sheet 50 mm thick or more).
  3. Decorative or technical fabric, of appropriate size to cover the entire area of the head of the bed (taking into account allowances for seams and hems).
  4. Decorative elements for decorating the back in the future.

The job won't work without the right tools:

  • electric drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • set of drills;
  • furniture stapler;
  • replacement set of staples for stapler;
  • construction knife;
  • scissors;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • sewing kit to decorate the headboard.

Creation technology

The plywood sheet is cut around the perimeter, giving it a rectangular or curly shape using a stencil.

All work consists of main stages, the sequence of which must be followed in order to obtain a high-quality result.

Stage 1. The preparatory stage at which the bed frame is prepared. You will have to seek help from specialists who will help make the frame of the future bed using special machines. These steps cannot be performed at home. But the prepared parts can be easily assembled at home, since the design is quite simple so that you can handle it yourself using a standard set of tools.

Stage 2. The design development of the entire bed and the headboard as a separate part is carried out. This stage requires very careful exploration of the various options. It is necessary to choose the optimal one, taking into account the general situation in the apartment, the style of the room and other points. A soft backrest can be attributed to the classic style of the room, but this option will not be suitable if the room is decorated in an avant-garde or high-tech style.

Stage 3. This involves making a soft headboard directly with your own hands. The main starting point is the dimensions of the bed frame. It is very important that the width of the bed matches the dimensions of the headboard. The main part of the headboard will be a sheet of plywood. The sheet is cut around the perimeter, giving the parts a rectangular shape, one of which is equal to the width of the bed, the other is equal to the height of the headboard.

Drill 4 holes for fasteners, two on each side.

Stage 4. The process of drilling holes for fasteners is carried out, which are placed in the lower part of the backrest in order to further ensure installation of the structure. Most often, 4 holes are made, placing two on each side to ensure reliable rigidity.

Stage 5. The process of giving the final shape of the back by cutting. Templates and various patterns will help you make a headboard; it won’t hurt to use a pre-created project. You need to draw an outline on the headboard and cut along it with a jigsaw.

After cutting, the surface must be sanded with sandpaper until it is completely smooth.

Stage 6. Indicates the initial stage at which the headboard will be upholstered. Decoration is done in two ways. One method involves creating a completely soft headboard, the other allows you to create a headboard with a retained hard edge. Both are interesting in their own way and have their own distinctive features.

  1. If a hard edge remains on the plywood surface, you need to screw the edging using self-tapping screws. The edging should completely replicate the top profile of the plywood, with a thickness twice as thin as the foam rubber used. The result will be a structure resembling a frame into which the prepared softening material will need to be inserted. This approach is effective if there is a beautiful carved frame. The headboard can be made in the shape of a rectangle.
  2. If the headboard is completely soft, the foam rubber is cut to a size equal to the plywood profile.

Using rubber glue, glue the foam rubber to the plywood.

Stage 7. The prepared piece of foam rubber (depending on the chosen decoration method) is glued to the plywood. It must be strengthened along the edges using a furniture stapler. This type of fixation is very reliable, protects the structure from distortions, and when performing the following actions, the foam rubber will remain in the right place.

Stage 8. At this stage, you can proceed directly to the process of covering the headboard with the decorative fabric chosen for the job. When choosing a fabric, you need to focus not only on its appearance, but also take into account consumer properties, taking into account thickness and wear resistance. The fabric must be fixed from the bottom plane. The work is done very carefully, carefully, maintaining parallelism and aligning the fabric. This procedure is very painstaking and important, because the appearance of the headboard will entirely depend on the thoroughness of the execution. Upholstery of the frame with fabric should be done along the entire perimeter, using natural angles to provide additional fastening of the fabric, as well as cutting through the fabric in those places where it is necessary to ultimately obtain a smooth fabric with medium tension. To ensure that the fabric is firmly attached to the plywood, you need to fold the edge of the fabric to get two layers and only then use the staples.

Decorative elements are attached using various methods, in accordance with the general rules of fastening.

Stage 9. Before proceeding with the decorating process, you need to check the tension of the fabric. Decoration can be done using various methods using all kinds of accessories, these can be furniture nails, buttons wrapped in fabric, various upholstery and other elements that match the style of the created headboard.

It is important to pay attention to the fact that various decorative elements must be fastened using different methods. But regardless of the decorative element used, it is important to follow the general principles of fastening.

  1. Decorative nails are used for nailing along the edges and along the plane in order to obtain an ornament located on the surface. To make nailing easier, the fabric can be attached in advance with a stapler. The type of ornament is chosen depending on personal preferences, the main thing is that it does not overload the surface and is not an unnecessary decoration for the headboard.
  2. The use of buttons is a very private way of decoration. To work, the buttons are wrapped in the fabric used in the work. To attach buttons to the headboard, you need to make small holes in advance with a drill where the hook can fit through. After the holes are ready, the buttons are wrapped in fabric, a nylon thread is inserted, and with a hook (or a long needle) the thread is threaded through the hole, pulling it out from the other side. To ensure more secure fastening, the procedure is repeated several times. The ends of the threads on the other side are secured with staplers.

From the fabric used in the work, cut out circles twice as large as buttons, and pass along the edge with a thread and a needle.

Stage 10. At the final stage, work is carried out on the back side of the head of the bed. It must be covered with technical fabric, secured with a furniture stapler. To give the bed a harmonious look, the bed frame should also be upholstered with fabric. When all the parts are ready, the structure is assembled and bolted into pre-prepared holes.

Stage 11. To make the entire structure reliable, the headboard of the bed is attached not only to the bed frame, but also to the wall (in the place where the bed will be located), fastening is carried out using furniture hinges.

At this point the work is ready. The headboard of the bed is soft and original.

Second installation method

The soft headboard of the bed gives the room coziness and comfort. You can lean on such a back, because it is pleasant and soft to the touch. And if the back also harmoniously fits into the interior of the room, the work was not done in vain.

Another option is offered for consideration, how you can make the headboard of the bed soft with your own hands. So, first you need to prepare the materials needed for work:

  • sheet of plywood or chipboard;
  • padding polyester (or batting), foam rubber;
  • buttons, thread, needle;
  • drill, nails;
  • jigsaw, furniture stapler.

Manufacturing process

On a sheet of chipboard you need to draw the shape of the headboard.

  1. On a sheet of chipboard (or plywood) you need to draw the shape of the headboard. The height of the headboard is calculated based on the material used. If the headboard is made of thin plywood, it can be installed on the surface of the bed. If heavy material is used, it is best to install the headboard directly on the floor.
  2. To give the headboard a symmetrical look, you need to make a blank on a sheet of paper and simply transfer the outline onto a sheet of plywood.
  3. The workpiece is cut using a jigsaw.
  4. In the case of organizing the relief of a soft back, it is necessary to drill holes in the workpiece. They should be located symmetrically. Their number is calculated taking into account the selected pattern, but you shouldn’t do a lot of them.
  5. Round parts are cut out of the sheathing material for sheathing the prepared buttons. The diameter of the fabric should be twice the size of the button so that it is enough to turn up. The button is laid out in the middle of the fabric, wrapped and the edges are sewn with a simple seam and tightened. The result will be dense bags with buttons inside.

Now you need to prepare the foam rubber. Its size must correspond to the plywood blank. The size is outlined with a marker and the foam is cut along the contour with scissors and a knife.

The plywood is covered with foam rubber, the size of which must correspond to the workpiece.

  1. Foam rubber of the required size is applied to the prepared plywood. The padding polyester (or batting) is stretched on top. All parts are assembled together, bent at the edges and fixed with a furniture stapler on the other side of the head of the bed.
  2. Next, the headboard must be covered with thick fabric. Fabric for upholstery of upholstered furniture (tapestry, corduroy and other high-quality fabric) is suitable for this work.
  3. The edges of the fabric are folded and secured with staples at the bends. Folds and waves should be smooth and symmetrically located in relation to each other. All of them are fixed with a stapler.
  4. Now, using nylon thread and a needle, you need to sew the prepared covered buttons in the places of the holes that were prepared at the initial stage of work. The thread is inserted through all layers of fabric, batting, foam rubber, passing through the hole. When sewing buttons, it is important to monitor the tension. It should be the same on each sewn button.
  5. At the final stage, fabric is cut out to a size slightly larger than the resulting headboard. The fabric is applied on the other side, folded along the edges in such a way as to hide all the folds of the batting, fabric and foam rubber. The edges are fixed using a furniture stapler at a distance of 1 mm from the edge.
  6. The finished headboard is attached to the wall or bed (depending on the size of the headboard) using special brackets or bolts.

Pros of finishing

The headboard for the bed can be made of any shape: rectangular, figured or semicircular.

The appearance of a bed with a soft headboard creates a feeling of not only beauty, but also wealth. It is not necessary to purchase such a bed ready-made in a store. You can easily do it yourself. Of course, this work is not easy, but if you follow the entire sequence of actions, it can be done in a very short period of time.

There are many different designs available to create a comfortable upholstered headboard for your bed. In many ways, it all depends on preferences and imagination. Two ways to create a soft headboard have already been discussed above. Below are two more. One of them is simple, and the second is more complex, it is performed using the carriage tie technique.

Simple option

For work, prepare a sheet of foam rubber, a board of plywood or chipboard and the fabric you like. To connect the parts you will need a construction stapler, which almost everyone has in the house.

The fabric is stretched onto a rectangular sheet of plywood, using a furniture stapler for fastening.

  1. You need to take a piece of rectangular plywood, foam rubber and thick fabric. To make the headboard softer, you can also add padding polyester. But if you use thick soft foam, it will be quite enough.
  2. It won't take much time to work. With active and careful work, 2-3 hours will be enough. And this is when working individually, and when working with assistants, you will cope even faster.
  3. Take a sheet of plywood and lay foam rubber on it in two layers.
  4. Using waste regular fabric, cover the back of the headboard using staples.
  5. A good fabric (thick, of the required color) should be covered with the headboard, securing it at the edges.
  6. This completes the work. The bedroom will immediately be transformed thanks to the unusual appearance and beauty of the colors of the headboard.

This is a fairly simple method, which is the main one for creating a soft headboard on a bed.

Headboard made of patchwork pillows

How to make a patchwork bed headboard

It's beautiful and originalpatchwork bed headboard, in my opinion, would look cool in a guest or children's bedroom.

To make it, you can use colorful patterned or plain fabrics. By choosing the appropriate tones, colors and patterns, such a patchwork bed can be fitted into any existing setting.

And finally, the most important thing is that a patchwork headboard is very easy to make...

I came across a similar recipe and took the time to try it, which I don’t regret.

The example in the photo used green, orange and white fabrics for the patchwork pillows, which goes well with the overall color in the bedroom.

About making a backrest from patchwork pillows

We will need:

— 2 sheets of 19mm plywood
- Saw, hacksaw or something similar (you can ask to cut the squares of your men)
— High density foam rubber.
— Batting
- Glue.
— 1 meter of fabric in each of four colors
- Scissors
— Stapler and 8mm staples
— Adhesive tape
— Screwdriver and approximately 35 screws
— Two fastenings — hangers on the wall.

To begin, we cut one sheet of plywood into pieces 200 x 200 or take ready-made ones.

We cut foam rubber and batting into pieces 200 x 200 mm.

We cut the fabric into pieces 300 x 300 mm.

Now some explanations for the instruction picture:

1 Take a piece of plywood 200 x 200 mm and glue foam rubber onto it so that it does not slip.

2. Add a layer of batting and fabric.

3. We get three layers, laid face down on the work surface.

4. Pull the fabric along the edges, first on one side, tuck in the excess and punch it with a stapler.

Pull the fabric to a stiff, but not too tight surface, first on opposite corners of the pillow. Then we fold the corners and carefully punch them.

We repeat this on all sides and catch the pillow, making sure not to overtighten it too much.

5 Follow steps 1-4 and get 40 patchwork pillows.

I want to say that it is easier to work according to a template, it turns out faster and more convenient.

6. Place all pillows face down. We twist them around the perimeter so that they do not fall apart. Then we take the second uncut piece of plywood, align it and secure each pillow through it with screws. You need to mark the places where you should tighten the screws and choose a screw number so that you don’t pierce the plywood on the cushions, otherwise you might get hurt later.

And finally, we attach hanging loops to the back wall of the headboard and everything is ready for installation.

If you don’t want to hang the patchwork headboard on the wall, you can do it differently. We attach two legs to it that are slightly lower than the bed. And then we simply install it between the wall and the standard headboard...

The original appearance of your bedroom is guaranteed!

The background to the creation of the headboard was as follows. On the one hand, I didn’t want to pay several thousand euros for an Italian or French bed, but on the other hand, I really wanted to create something special. And then it was decided that we would make the bed ourselves. So, I’ll show you how the process of creating this beautiful bed went.

I formulated the problem like this. We need to make a bed with a fairly wide base, a removable cover and a shaped headboard.
First, a whole collection of headboards was assembled. After reviewing it, a shortlist was formed, which was analyzed for the complexity of implementation on site. As a result of weighing all the pros and cons, a prototype of the future headboard was chosen.

So now everything is in order.

1. We ordered a prefabricated MDF bed frame. Previously, two orthopedic bases were transferred to the workshop, purchased from IKEA, the dimensions of which became the starting point for calculating the sizes.

2. Cut out the shape of the headboard.

3. Dismantle the headboard and start upholstering it. Foam rubber 5 cm thick was pre-cut in the workshop according to a pattern taken from the headboard shape. We apply foam rubber to the headboard and fix it with glue (special glue for foam rubber) in several places.

4. Use a furniture stapler to nail the edges of the foam rubber to the plywood.

5. We proceed directly to stretching the fabric. We start from the bottom to fix the fabric evenly, then place the headboard vertically and stretch the fabric. To go around the corners, we cut the fabric.

6. Place the headboard vertically and check the symmetry and uniform tension of the fabric.
7. Let's start working with furniture nails. First we upholster the outer edge.

8. Make chalk markings for the second line of furniture nails. To mark this line, we first punch it with a furniture stapler.

9. Along the lines marked with a stapler, we nail the nails of the furniture tape.

10. On the reverse side we cover everything with technical fabric.

11. Let's start with the frame. We cover the outer perimeter and the upper surface of the frame with foam rubber.

12. We make a pattern for technical fabric, which will be fixed under the finishing removable cover.

13. Using a furniture stapler, we nail the technical fabric on the top and bottom sides of the frame.

14. Making a pattern for a removable cover.

15. Nail one part of the Velcro to the frame. The second half will be sewn directly to the cover.

16. Check how the cover fits and adjust if necessary.

The quilted headboard cover can be made from the same fabric from which you made the bedspread and draperies, or try combining several different fabrics. If you want the cover to emphasize the strict shape of the headboard, take a non-bright, plain satin. The cover will look better if you make a lining from metcal, specially treated against shrinkage, which, however, can be replaced with an old sheet.

To find out what size your headboard is, take a cellophane film and apply it to the headboard, circle the front and back of the headboard with a marker. Then cut out both pieces and get the desired size and shape, which can be adjusted depending on what you want. We pin the parts to the fabric with needles, but remember that this is a natural size and you need to make a seam allowance of 1.5-2 cm.

If your bed is close to the wall, then the back part does not have to be made of the main fabric; you can replace it with a cheaper one. Then the front part of the case can be decorated as follows: draw out the part with squares or diamonds. Then, cut out the lining (you can use padding polyester) and the bottom piece, chop off all three parts and stitch along the lines you drew. You can also sew buttons at the intersection of lines, after stitching, cover them with the main fabric and sew them on, you can sew on rhinestones or beads, as you like.

Next, measure the thickness and length along the top and sides of your headboard. Now cut a straight strip width = thickness + seam allowance, length = length along the top and side edges + seam allowance. We sew this strip with one side to the main fabric, the other to the fabric that will be your back.

On the front and back halves of the headboard, don’t forget to add 5 cm to each piece below.

That’s it, turn it inside out and put it on, the bottom of the fabric can be carefully stapled or hemmed by hand. Your headboard is ready, truly beautiful!!!

The bed is the main piece of furniture in the bedroom. Installing or updating a headboard will help transform the overall arrangement of the room and give the room more coziness and comfort. Despite the numerous varieties of these products in the store, you can make a soft headboard for a bed with your own hands; there are many ways, and the costs are minimal.

Types of products

The structures will help not only improve the quality of rest, but also protect the wall from rubbing, which will allow you to preserve the freshness and beauty of the finish for a long time. You can make a soft headboard for a bed with your own hands in several types:

  • soft;
  • figured;
  • carriage tie;
  • using shreds;
  • from pillows.

Upholstered headboard for bed

This option is very simple to implement and anyone can do it without much difficulty. In order to make a soft headboard, you need to prepare:

  • a piece of plywood (the shape can be rectangular, round and other options);
  • thick fabric;
  • foam;
  • construction stapler.

At the first stage, you need to take a plywood sheet and apply 2 layers of foam rubber on it. Then we put thick fabric on the plywood and foam rubber so that the material extends 10-15 cm beyond the edges, then secure it with a stapler. It is preferable to select shades and patterns based on the arrangement of the bedroom. Thus, in 2-3 hours you can transform your bedroom with a rather original and elegant element.

Curly headboard for bed

This type of construction will also be soft, but have a special relief. To make it you need to prepare:

  • plywood sheet;
  • soap or chalk - for marking the fabric;
  • foam;
  • construction adhesive, mostly universal;
  • stapler;
  • furniture nails;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • unnecessary material.

First, we make a sketch on which drawings and markings will be made. Afterwards, blanks are cut out of plywood, fabric and foam rubber. The foam rubber is glued to the plywood; for greater reliability, the edges are secured with a stapler. The same manipulations are done with the fabric.

The head of the bed is placed in a horizontal position, and the fabric is carefully stretched using staples on the back side. On the back side of the fabric you need to make cuts so that it perfectly follows the relief of the headboard.

If you don’t know how to decorate the upholstery, you need to take furniture nails, which are fixed at a distance of 1 cm from the edge of the headboard. In order to make the second line of decor, markings are made with chalk or soap with an indentation of approximately 10 cm from the first line. Carnations are nailed along the marked line. The reverse side is closed with unnecessary material using a stapler. The headboard is completely ready.

The element can be attached to a wall or bed. You can also simply place it on the floor against the wall near the bed.

Product using the carriage tie technique

This design looks quite interesting and stylish. For work you will need materials:

  • plywood sheet;
  • stapler;
  • foam rubber - at least 5 cm;
  • pneumatic gun;
  • padding polyester;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • cord;
  • buttons with a fabric surface of medium or large size.

A layer of glue is spread on the plywood sheet and foam rubber is fixed. Next, a sheet of cardboard or thick paper is placed on the surface, holes for the buttons are drawn, then they are cut out. A sheet with cut holes is applied to the foam rubber and the places for the buttons are outlined with a marker.

Making holes for buttons

To transfer the holes to the foam rubber, use a drill with an attachment. You can glue padding polyester on top, which will make the surface softer, but this is not necessary. The upholstery material is stretched, after which through holes are made with a drill. A cord is pulled through the buttons and made into the holes. For convenience, you can use a hook.

Thread the buttons through the holes

The cords must be tightened so that the buttons fit snugly against the upholstery. The ropes are secured with a stapler. The bed with a beautiful headboard is ready.

Headboard using scraps

You can make a soft headboard with your own hands from soft materials or fabric. For significant savings, it is better to take not a whole piece of material, but use many scraps. The material can be old jeans, dresses, etc. The work will be carried out using the following materials:

  • plywood sheet – 2 pcs.;
  • foam;
  • pieces of fabric;
  • saw or hacksaw;
  • scissors;
  • glue and adhesive tape;
  • stapler;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver

The plywood sheet must be divided into square or rectangular pieces. Using a saw or hacksaw, cut out the shapes. The number and sizes can be very diverse. Similar figures are cut out of foam rubber; the fabric needs to be 8-10 cm larger.

The materials are glued together as follows: plywood + foam rubber + fabric. To avoid wrinkles, the fabric should be taut. For reliability, the fabric is additionally secured with a stapler. The finished elements are glued together with adhesive tape. Next, take a second plywood, onto which each figure is attached using glue or self-tapping screws and a screwdriver. The product is ready and looks quite original.

Pillow headboard

This backrest is made from a large number of small pillows. It all depends on the desired size of the headboard. Pillows should be the same shape, but may differ in color. The pads are sewn to each other at the corners. They can be secured with glue or nails. The first option is more practical and will not spoil the headboard. You can also use a cornice for these purposes.

In addition

The bed can be decorated with elements from other materials. Wooden headboards are absolutely environmentally friendly and will bring elegance and simplicity to the interior. The wooden element will look especially useful in rustic and natural styles.

The headboard with a built-in mirror looks quite original. Due to this, it is possible to create different visual effects in the bedroom. Upholstered headboards always look beautiful and highlight the overall style of the bedroom. An element decorated with various decor will add wealth and chic; in addition, made with your own hands, it will always be a unique and original interior detail.

There are various bed headboards on the Internet, photos of which will help you choose the option that is ideal for the design of the room. Create your own unique option, in which the bed will be complemented with a beautiful and functional detail.

Textile decoration of the house makes its interior more cozy, soft and comfortable. But it is these qualities that are especially important for the furnishings of a bedroom. Beds are most often decorated with fabric and leather. Such products are beautiful, cozy, but expensive. The decision to cover the bed with fabric yourself will help not only save money, but also create original furniture: a delicate crib for your princess, a solid family bed decorated with a carriage frame, or something else very special.

When choosing the most suitable material for bed upholstery, consider not only the interior of the room (the decor used, its color, shape, texture). Be sure to pay attention to the properties of the fabric. To keep its shape, it must be dense; so that in a year or two you don’t have to think about repairs - durable; Of course, it should not collect too much dust and be easy to clean with the means available to you.

To decorate your beds with your own hands, you can:

  • take old furniture, then, taking into account the initial data and your capabilities, improve its appearance;
  • use a ready-made product of simple design;
  • according to your measurements, make a frame with an orthopedic base yourself or in a workshop.

Bright bed in art deco style

It is not worth saying that creating a beautiful, stylish and at the same time high-quality product yourself is absolutely easy. But a little effort, care, good materials and a description of the process will undoubtedly help in the work.

Such a bright bed is perfect for almost any interior and will decorate it. The bed will fit especially well into a spacious room that is not overloaded with decorations and furniture, since it itself is an attention-grabbing decor. The only thing you need to pay attention to is to think over an individual color scheme.

Preparing to decorate the bed

So, first of all, you need to take care of the base of the bed. Having carefully thought through the size of the bed, choosing a ready-made appropriate orthopedic base, drawing the desired headboard shape that suits your interior, you can make the bed itself from MDF. To do this, use the instructions and description of assembling the bed on the Internet or order the work from professionals. The last option is the simplest and most reliable.

To decorate a finished structure with fabric, prepare:

  • Decorative textiles.
  • Textiles for covering the back parts of the bed.
  • Foam rubber about 5 cm thick.
  • Furniture glue.
  • Scissors.
  • Sharp carpenter's knife with replaceable blades.
  • Decor for the headboard - finishing furniture nails.
  • Hammer.
  • Furniture stapler with staples.
  • Tape measure, chalk for marking.
  • Sandpaper or sander.
  • Adhesive tape if you also plan to make the structure's trim (except the headboard) removable.

Before applying decor to the MDF parts, sand the cut areas of the bed base parts and the ends with sandpaper. Having a sanding machine will greatly speed up this process. This way you will be able to avoid damaging the fabric while working.

Description of work

  1. We start covering the bed with decorative material from the headboard. We dismantle the required part of the frame.
  2. We cut out a piece from foam rubber that should repeat the outline of the sheathed MDF headboard. We cut it out using a carpenter's knife. The task is not easy. If, as in our project, the headboard has a complex shape with roundness, the cutting of the foam can be ordered at the place of purchase or in a furniture workshop using a prepared pattern.
  3. Apply glue to the front surface of the headboard, then lay the foam rubber tightly on it so that the curved edges match as much as possible.
  4. Attach the edge of the foam to the MDF base using a furniture stapler, placing the staples a short distance from each other.
  5. Cut out decorative material for the headboard. On the right, left and at the bottom, leave an allowance for fastening of about 10 cm. At the top of the figured headboard, make the allowance larger by 5-7 cm, so that it is convenient to carefully lay out the corners, or leave a rectangle so that you can cut off the excess later.
  6. To ensure that the fabric lies flat, align its bottom edge and begin fastening it with a furniture stapler.
  7. Then place the headboard in a vertical position and stretch the fabric.
  8. To properly drape the corners of the figured top, cut the fabric. Fix the laid out fragments with a stapler to the back of the headboard.
  9. Stretch the fabric in the same way and attach the textiles to the sides of the headboard. Check the correct tension of the fabric and start decorating the surface with furniture nails.
  10. Using a hammer, carefully attach nails along the top edge of the headboard, laying a strip evenly along the visible outer edge (except for the bottom).
  11. Then, using chalk and a tape measure, mark with a line the location for the second finishing row of furniture nails at a distance of 15-20 cm from the edge.
  12. Using a stapler, we fix the decor along the line to the MDF base.
  13. We lay furniture tape over the staples exactly along the line and secure it with a hammer and nails. Decoration of the headboard is completed.
  14. To give this part of the bed a finished look, we cut out a blank from technical fabric prepared in advance, making an allowance of 1.5-2 cm for the hem. We fasten the fabric with a stapler.

Now you can start working on decorating the frame.

  1. We prepare blanks of foam rubber for gluing the base.
  2. Apply glue to the surface, glue foam rubber along the entire perimeter of the end of the frame (except for the part where the headboard is attached), then along the top part.

In this project, the soft frame of the case is covered with technical fabric, and the decorative cover will be removable and attached with adhesive tape.

  1. Cut strips of technical material to the size of the surface of the sidewalls, make allowances on all sides by 2-3 cm.
  2. Fastening with a stapler to the top and then to the bottom of the frame, sew the foam rubber with prepared strips of technical fabric.
  3. Use a stapler to attach the Velcro tape to the frame.
  4. Make a pattern for a removable cover. Before cutting out the fabric, try it on again to ensure the item fits correctly.
  5. After adjustments, the parts can be cut out. Sew the cover. Do not forget to attach adhesive tape to it at the attachment points.
  6. Place the cover on the frame. Place the headboard in place.

The bed is ready. It will not only decorate the interior of any bedroom, but will also become an excellent place for a complete, comfortable rest.

Other ways to upholster a bed with textiles

When decorating a bed with fabric, the main role is played by the choice of material and the method of designing the headboard. For example, a product in cotton with a small pattern will differ from a similar piece of furniture upholstered in velvet or leather-like textiles. But this will have virtually no effect on the work of the master.

One of the most popular methods of upholstering upholstered furniture all over the world is the carriage tie. Often this method of decorating a bed is used not only on the headboard, but also decorates the entire rigid external structure.

How to make a carriage tie

For work you will need:

  • plywood or MDF for the base;
  • foam rubber 5 cm thick;
  • furniture glue;
  • basic and technical fabrics;
  • strong threads;
  • decorative buttons;
  • long needles;
  • furniture stapler;
  • drill with drill and attachment for large holes in foam rubber.

To decorate the head of the bed with a carriage screed, you need:

  1. Mark the screeds on the base (in squares or diamonds).
  2. Drill through holes at the marked points with a drill.
  3. Transfer the markings to the foam rubber.
  4. Using a special device, make holes in the foam rubber with a diameter of up to 1 cm.
  5. Glue the foam rubber onto the base so that all the holes match.
  6. Having covered the surface with decorative textiles, begin to sew holes, tightening them with special buttons and forming folds between the ties;
  7. After this, drape the edges with the same folds and attach them to the back using a furniture stapler.
  8. To cover the frame of the stock with fabric, use the description from the first project.

Such an elegant decorated element of the bed as a headboard can become the main idea for decorating the entire room. Use your imagination to create your own cozy corner.

Headboard with soft squares

A slightly similar to the previous, but easier to implement finishing option is to decorate the headboard with individual soft squares/rectangles glued to the base and covered with textiles. Thus, you can decorate a bed for a nursery, make a product in patchwork style or for any other style by choosing the appropriate material or a combination of them.

Tools and materials for work

  • plywood sheet 150x75 cm for the base;
  • 18 small plywood squares 25x25 cm;
  • decorative fabric with a symmetrical pattern (you can alternate different colors and patterns);
  • padding polyester or other similar artificial filler;
  • stapler for working on furniture;
  • scissors;
  • wood glue or liquid nails.

Before starting work, prepare the wooden parts - sand them, level their ends with sandpaper. According to the size of the squares, making allowances on all sides of 5-8 cm, cut 18 pieces of decorative fabric accordingly.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Place the plywood square in the middle of the fabric square. Using a furniture stapler, attach the fabric to the back of the wooden piece only on one side and slightly on the sides.
  2. Fill the resulting pocket with padding polyester. Distribute the filling evenly.
  3. Secure the remaining edges by closing the square.
  1. Make the remaining 17 blanks in the same way. Make sure they have the same amount of filler.
  2. Using wood glue or liquid nails, firmly glue the squares onto the base of the headboard.

All that remains is to use padding polyester (or foam rubber) and the same textiles to decorate the base. The bed is ready. Good night!

No one will argue that sleeping on a bed with a soft headboard is comfortable and cozy, since there is always the opportunity to lean on the back, which is pleasant to the touch and harmonizes perfectly with the entire interior.

A soft headboard will make the bed even softer and the interior richer.

This bed is good for everyone, but many are confused by such a nuance as the relatively high cost of such furniture. However, if you don’t have enough finances, don’t despair: you can make a soft headboard with your own hands, there’s nothing particularly difficult about it. In order to make a soft headboard, you will need the following:

In order to make a soft headboard for a bed, you will need batting or padding polyester.

  • Chipboard or plywood. As for plywood, you should not buy it at a hardware store, since it is not sold there of the highest quality; it becomes distorted during use. It is recommended to purchase such material from companies that manufacture furniture;
  • batting or padding polyester. As for the batting, it is easy to work with, but you should not stretch it too much, as it may unravel. Instead of batting, you can use a knitted lining fabric;
  • foam;
  • buttons;
  • nails;
  • strong threads with lavsan or nylon (you can use nylon threads). Whatever threads are used, the main condition is: they should not tear, they can only be cut;
  • drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • stapler for furniture (it is better to buy a metal one, you should immediately take spare staples for it).

How to make a soft back: the first stage of work

Before you start work, you need to develop a design project for the bed in general and the headboard in particular. This process should be carried out only after many options have been studied, the most acceptable one should be chosen, and one should be guided not only by one’s tastes, but also by the features of the rest of the interior. It should be taken into account that a soft headboard is more suitable for a classic style, but it will not be suitable for a bedroom designed in a high-tech or avant-garde style.

First, the outline of the future head of the bed is drawn on the chipboard. Then the canvas is attached to the outline using a stapler.

On a sheet of plywood or chipboard you need to draw the shape of the future soft headboard of the bed. The height is calculated from the surface of the bed (if the back is made of plywood) or from the floor (if it is made of a heavier material). The upper part should be symmetrical. In order to achieve this, you need to draw an outline on a piece of paper and trace both sides in turn. This blank is then carefully cut out with a jigsaw.

If you plan to make a soft back relief using buttons or other accessories, then you need to mark and drill holes in the workpiece. If buttons are used, then you need to take into account the fact that all tight-fitting buttons are produced with a plastic leg; such a leg cannot withstand loads and immediately bounces off.

It is difficult to find metal buttons on the stem in regular stores, so it is recommended to purchase them in military stores. It is not recommended to use too many such elements, and you must ensure that their arrangement is symmetrical. Now, from the fabric with which the headboard will be covered, you need to cut out large round pieces (their diameter should be twice the size of the buttons themselves). You need to sew a strong seam around the perimeter, then place a button in the center and tighten the thread. Thus, the button ends up in a tight bag. In order for everything to be secure, it is recommended to secure it with a few additional stitches.

How to make a soft back: the second stage of work

To make a soft back, the base of chipboard and foam rubber is sheathed with soft material.

The workpiece is placed on a foam sheet, and then you need to draw the contours of the soft part with a marker. Then, with an ordinary, sharply sharpened knife, you need to cut the foam along the contour, pushing its parts apart. If soft material is used for these purposes, then instead of a knife you should use simple scissors. Now you need to assemble the future soft headboard of the bed - foam rubber and plywood, then batting or padding polyester is stretched on top. All parts need to be connected together, bending the edges. On the reverse side you need to fix the batting, for this you use a furniture stapler.

Then the headboard is similarly finished with thick fabric; you can use tapestry, corduroy and high-quality fabric, which is used for upholstery. As a fabric, you can use leatherette, chinilla or slightly fleecy fabric. When purchasing fabric, you need to take into account that its width is 150 cm, which means that it may not fit along the length.

The trim around the edges of the headboard is carefully secured with strong threads.

In order to avoid this, it is recommended to use fabric without a pronounced pattern. We must take into account that foam rubber is sold in standard sheets, so you need to cut it out yourself. It is good to cut it with a regular knife, but you should not be afraid that the edge will not be perfectly smooth, since it will still be pressed by the fabric.

The edges of the fabric need to be folded, first of all at the bends, they should be fixed with a stapler. All waves are fixed, even sections too, but you need to try to keep the folds even. Now you need to take strong threads with lavsan or nylon and a large needle. The thread is threaded through the hole, the fabric and foam are pierced through. The needle should be longer than the thickness of the back. It is necessary to take into account that needles tend to break during work, so you need to stock up on several at once.
