A cultivator assembled with your own hands is an indispensable assistant. How to make a cultivator with your own hands - five manufacturing options for homemade ones Do-it-yourself tornado manual cultivator

Cultivator – garden tools of varying degrees of complexity, designed for cultivating and loosening the soil. With its help, you can significantly simplify pre-sowing work and reduce the time you spend in the garden several times. However, even the simplest hand cultivators, despite their primitive design, are not cheap and, lacking extra funds, many summer residents continue to make do with a shovel, turning loosening the soil into slave labor. But it’s quite easy to find a way out of this situation - you need to make a cultivator with your own hands. We will offer at your discretion several ways to manufacture this garden unit, starting with the simplest manual model and ending with a tool with an electric motor.

A homemade cultivator can have a rather complex design - a model based on a chainsaw

There is often a product on the market that is very simple in design - the Tornado cultivator, which is a kind of corkscrew on a vertical stand with a horizontal handle.

"Tornado" - a manual cultivator for easy loosening of soil

Making such a manual cultivator with your own hands is as easy as shelling pears using ordinary pitchforks. To do this, purchase a plastic handle-shaped attachment from a hardware store - they are used for both forks and shovels to make working with the tool easier. Since the handle in the original “Tornado” is made in the form of a long horizontal tube, our nozzle will also have to be improved. To do this we take the segment plastic pipe about 0.5 m long.

Its diameter should be slightly larger than the thickness of the horizontal handle of the plastic handle we purchased. Carefully cut the pipe lengthwise so that you can turn it out and put it on the handle handle. It is advisable to secure the tube so that it does not slip during operation and does not jump out of its designated place. The easiest way is to tape it with electrical tape. At the end of the work, we will get a handle, the edges of which will protrude on both sides of the handle by about 25 cm.

Now it’s time to get to the fun part and give the fork teeth the necessary corkscrew shape. To do this, use a regular hammer, with the help of which the metal will bend in any direction. It is advisable to have a photograph of the original Tornado cultivator on hand and try to repeat all the bends that exist on it.

Bicycle-based cultivator option

The next manual cultivator, which we will present to your attention, is more complex in design and to some extent mechanized. To make it you will need old frame from a bicycle, as well as a bicycle wheel.

A cultivator head is attached to the bicycle frame - this can be a finished product from an old cultivator or made independently from sharp steel rods. If desired, a small plow can also be used in this capacity. The handle for convenient control of the tool is made of steel or aluminum pipes. For the crossbar, take a small piece of pipe with a diameter of 2-2.5 cm. All components are secured with bolts, but so that the connections do not dangle - the entire structure must be rigid.

It is better to take a wheel that is neither small nor large, but of medium diameter. It is secured to the frame with special wing nuts or regular locknuts.

Despite the fact that this cultivator is homemade, it can be used to easily remove weeds and weed the space between the beds.

Toothed manual plower

The next model of a homemade cultivator consists of five steel discs-pancakes, which rotate on an axis 320 mm long and 16 mm in diameter. Three discs contain sharp curved teeth, which will be used as a working tool for loosening the soil. At the ends of the axle there are trunnions with bearings, on which steel brackets are fixed, converging on a wooden handle.

Diagram of a gear cultivator: 1 - disks, 2 - teeth made of rods, 3 - axle, 4 - axle, 5 - bracket, 6 - wooden handle

Steel disks and axles are machined independently or ordered from local craftsmen who are skilled at working at lathe. Five holes are drilled on the side surfaces of the three disks, into which teeth made from a steel rod with a diameter of 10 mm are inserted. The resulting disks with teeth are hung on the axle, then axles with bearings and washers are installed.

When such a cultivator operates, the teeth on the discs stick into the ground and turn over the surface layer. Sharp “claws” cut off the roots of weeds, loosen the soil and help saturate it with air.

Disc rotary cultivator

You can also make a rotary cultivator with your own hands, which can be used to harrow, break up large clods of earth and level the surface of the garden. The diagram of this model is shown in the figure and it is called a disc cultivator.

Homemade disc cultivator: 1 - disk, 2 - axle. 3 - sleeve, 4 - large bracket, 5 - small bracket, 6 - rod, 7 - pipe, 8 - handle

The working body of the cultivator is spherical convex disks. They are welded to bushings, which, in turn, are put on the axles. The axial ends are secured in brackets using cotter pins.

A pipe with handles at the end and a crossbar passes through a special ledge made in a large bracket. A rod 250mm long and 24x2mm in diameter is welded to the small bracket. A 16mm thick rod is screwed into it, part of which protrudes above the crossbar.

Manufacturing steel disks can be a little difficult. They must be spherical, and it is quite difficult to give such a shape to ordinary metal plates 4 mm thick. It is necessary to use a hammer, “knocking out” the bowl in the center of the workpiece with strong blows.

Wing nuts on the crossbar allow you to adjust the installation angle of the spherical discs in relation to the direction of movement of the cultivator. When the nut is rotated clockwise, the rod rises up. At the same time, the large bracket will bend and the angle of the disks will change.

Electric version based on a meat grinder

At home you can make not only hand tool, but also an electric cultivator with your own hands.

The photo shows a cultivator made on the basis of a production meat grinder. This design is quite simple to make. Two corners are screwed to the gearbox housing, to which two pipes are welded, the ends of which are bent to obtain comfortable handles. Another piece of pipe is placed between them for strength. Wheel axles are also welded to the corners. It is advisable to use medium-sized wheels, since too large ones will be inconvenient, and small ones will sink into the soil when moving.

The shaft of the structure is machined from ordinary scrap. The attachment of a production meat grinder is chipped with a sledgehammer and a cast iron bushing remains. A workpiece machined from scrap is placed in it and a grouser screw is welded. The engine switch is located, for user convenience, on the handle.

When moving quickly with such a cultivator, the screw breaks the earth into large clods - the result is rough plowing. If you move slowly, the loosening is more accurate - the soil turns into dust.

Here's another interesting video, which tells you how to make an electric cultivator with your own hands, using a frame, chain and sprocket from a bicycle, and an engine from washing machine.

There are many more ways to make units for plowing land at home, for example, you can make a homemade cultivator from a chainsaw. All you need is the ability to understand technology and a little imagination.

Every gardener cultivates the soil in his dacha. The word “cultivation” came to us from the Latin language. Translated, it means to process, to cultivate. But it is so. During the cultivation process, the soil is processed and cultivated in order to get rid of weeds. But the purpose of cultivation is not only weeding. After cultivation, the soil becomes loose and more saturated with oxygen. A cultivator is used to cultivate the soil before sowing and after the crop is harvested. You also need to use a cultivator to cultivate the row spacing, hill up and replant the plants. A cultivator is a very convenient device; it will make work easier and reduce the time of tillage in the garden, flower bed and any other area.

A modern cultivator can be bought at a specialized store. But such equipment can easily be assembled with your own hands. You just need to find clear instructions, necessary details and tools and get to work.

First, you should know that cultivators are divided according to the type of food:

  • manual;
  • gasoline;
  • electric.

They are also divided by weight and power. There are ultra-light cultivators, mini ones, they weigh no more than thirty kilograms, ideal for small garden plots and cottages.

There are light cultivators. Their weight is more than thirty, but not more than sixty kilograms. Such cultivators are used on large areas, on plowed fields and virgin lands. Average cultivators weigh up to one hundred kilograms. Well, the largest cultivators are heavy. Their weight is more than one hundred kilograms. Such cultivators are used on large fields and lands.

There is another classification of cultivators - by purpose:

  • universal - used for cultivating soil in any area, between rows, they are used for weeding;
  • special - for processing a specific variety or crop;
  • plant feeders - these cultivators are designed to cultivate the soil and gradually add fertilizers;
  • pre-planting, steam – for harrowing any soil before sowing, suitable for summer cottages;
  • row crops - for weeding between rows in fields where crops have already sprouted.

There are cultivators for cultivating one row, mini cultivators for the garden, and cultivators for cultivating several rows at the same time. They differ in size, because for one row the cultivator is much smaller than for cultivating several rows.

But the most suitable for cultivating the garden and flower beds is a standard manual cultivator. It is lightweight and easy to use. It also takes up little space and is light in weight. There are garden cultivators, they are also small in size, ideal for the garden.

Advantages and disadvantages of cultivators

Each type of cultivator has its own pros and cons. Electric cultivators are lightweight and small in size. They don't need to be refueled because they run on electricity. They are also quite simple and easy to use, but are not suitable for a dacha that does not have electricity.

The disadvantages include the fact that they only work in the area where the power cord reaches. Also, electric cultivators do not have high power. With such a cultivator you can cultivate flower beds and greenhouse soil, but in large areas they are completely useless. After all, the length of the cord determines the place where this cultivator can cultivate the soil.

A cultivator that runs on gasoline (gasoline cultivator) has slightly more advantages. It is convenient to cultivate large areas, because such a cultivator has high power and functionality. Disadvantages include difficulties in maintenance, heavy weight and refueling. And the more powerful such a cultivator, the more fuel is needed to refuel it. Gasoline cultivators are often called star cultivators.

Hand cultivator - do it at home

Such a cultivator is the most useful thing on the farm. It has a lot of positive aspects:

  • no stress on the lower back,
  • ease of use,
  • efficiency,
  • availability,
  • compactness.

With such a cultivator you will not spread weeds all over the area, and it loosens the soil very well and does not turn it upside down. But the cultivator is designed for cultivating small areas and only on plowed land. It is ideal for a summer residence.

First, you should understand for what purpose you need a cultivator. After all, the choice of a particular cultivator is influenced by both the set of crops that are planted on the site and the structure of the soil of the site itself. If you have a small plot, then a powerful and voluminous cultivator will take up a lot of space. It will only cause harm, there will be no benefit from it.

It is best to create a cultivator with your own hands, this way you will save your money and find an assistant on the farm. Some cultivators can be created from scrap materials, some require additional parts, but their cost will not exceed the cost of a whole cultivator in a store. Do-it-yourself cultivators are ideal helpers in the garden and are suitable for the garden.

The smallest cultivator

“Nimble Baby” is a small homemade cultivator; it can be called a mini cultivator. It covers only twenty centimeters of territory, but working with such a cultivator is very convenient. All you need to do is attach a few cut metal stars to the axle, and then attach a convenient handle. So the new assistant on the farm is ready. It makes it easy to cultivate between rows when the crop has already sprouted. It is its mini size that will prevent damage necessary plants. Also, if the stars are well sharpened, they cut weeds without any problems. In this case, the weed does not cling to the cultivator and is not spread throughout the area. Suitable for a summer residence, because it is convenient to transport.

Simple cultivator – “Tornado”

Another simple cultivator that you can make yourself is called “Tornado”. This cultivator is ideal for cultivating light soil. And it is made from the most ordinary forks or springy wire; it can also be called a mini cultivator.

  1. In order to make such a cultivator, you will need a wooden handle, which will need to be modified. The wooden handle of your new cultivator should be strengthened. For this purpose, metal or plastic pipe, cut lengthwise. It should not be much larger than a wooden handle. After the pipe is cut, put it on a wooden handle and wind it. This will make the handle much stronger, and it will be easier to work with such a cultivator.
  2. Next, proceed to manufacturing the main part of the cultivator. Take a pitchfork and a hammer, you also need a picture or drawings of the original Tornado cultivator, because you need to exactly repeat all the bends.
  3. From strong blow hammer, the fork teeth will bend in the direction you point them. But don't overdo it.
  4. Once the cultivator base is created, attach it to the handle and you can till the soil with your new cultivator.

You can also make cultivator teeth from thick springy wire. This option will take more time and effort. But the result is worth it.

Cultivators from an old bicycle

For another version of the cultivator, which you can create with your own hands, you need bicycle parts. So, if you have an old and unnecessary bicycle, make your own cultivator and don’t waste money on the purchase. This is an ideal helper in the country.

  1. We attach a cultivator head to the frame of an old bicycle; it can be part of an old cultivator, iron rods, or a small plow or glander.
  2. A comfortable handle for controlling the cultivator is made from sections of iron pipes or other metal. A crossbar is attached between the handles.
  3. All parts of the cultivator are assembled together using bolts, the nuts on which are tightened as tightly as possible so that the entire system is solid, or all parts can be secured by welding. This option is much more reliable than the previous one.
  4. After the base is ready, a wheel is attached to it; it should not be too large so that the plow fits well into the ground. And not too small, so that you have to put more effort into pushing than is required with a medium-sized wheel.

If you still have an old medium-sized wheel, you can make another version of a home cultivator. Simply attach curved metal handles to the wheel, which also holds a small plow behind the wheel, closer to you. And now the homemade hand cultivator is ready.

DIY disc cultivator

There is also an option for a homemade hand cultivator, which is made from steel discs. There should be five discs in total, three of them have teeth attached to them, with the help of which the soil will be loosened. You can make such discs yourself or order them. After all, they are made on a lathe. Two discs will be smooth, and the other three will have special teeth or curved nails attached. When the disks are ready, they are put on the axle one by one, then bearings and washers are installed, and then the entire structure is attached to a wooden handle. The soil is cultivated with the help of these teeth; they alternately stick into the ground and loosen it. These tines also cut the roots of weeds. Due to its weight, this hand cultivator does not require special application strength. The only drawback is that you will have to periodically clean the teeth from weeds. After all, the cut grass clings to the teeth and spreads throughout the entire area.

You can make a rotary cultivator with your own hands; this type of cultivator is intended for harrowing and leveling the soil after plowing. It is somewhat similar to a disk cultivator, but the disks in it are of a different shape - they are hemispherical and convex. Also, there are not five of them, but only four. In this case, each pair is attached to its own axis. Also, the base remains movable, which helps to change the angle of the discs if necessary. The base will be metal, it can be attached to a comfortable wooden or metal handle, which will have screws for adjusting the angle of the discs. An all-metal cultivator of this type will be heavier, so if you do not have the strength, make the handle wooden. This cultivator is convenient because the grass will not cling to the discs.

Convenient chainsaw cultivator

If you have an old chainsaw that you haven't used for a long time, don't rush to throw it away or sell it. From its serviceable parts you can make an excellent hand-held cultivator with your own hands. This option is suitable for those who are technically savvy. You will also need to purchase some materials, lubricants and fuel. After all, this cultivator is gasoline-powered, that is, it runs on gasoline or other fuel.

  1. First you need to make a frame for the walk-behind tractor from the corners. It will be cubic in shape.
  2. Next, the engine is attached to the top of the frame of the future cultivator.
  3. The handles are made of metal pipes; with such handles it is very convenient to work the soil.
  4. You will also need two sprockets, one for the intermediate shaft and the other for the drive shaft. It is because of these details that the cultivator is called a star cultivator.

The disadvantage of this homemade cultivator is that it requires constant refueling.

DIY electric cultivator

If you wish, you can create an electric cultivator at home. But it should be taken into account that it will break the earth into large pieces, this is when working quickly. If you cultivate the soil slowly with such a cultivator, the clods will be smaller, and the soil will become softer and plowed. It should also be remembered that the work area will be limited by the length of the electrical cord.

  1. In order to make such a cultivator, you need two metal corners that are attached to the gearbox. Curved handles are attached to them for greater convenience.
  2. The axle for the wheels is also attached to the same corners. The wheels for this cultivator are of medium size. After all, it won’t be very convenient to work with big ones, and small ones will fail.
  3. Next, you need to connect the shaft to a conventional electric meat grinder. You will need to break off the standard nozzle and insert the prepared screw into the resulting hole.
  4. Next, for greater convenience, you can move the power button from the meat grinder itself to the handle of the cultivator, and you’re done.
  5. You should replace the power cord on the meat grinder, because the standard cord is usually very short and will not work.

There are many more options for making cultivators with your own hands. You just need to show a little imagination and ingenuity. After all, having an old but working motor from a washing machine, you can also create a well-functioning electric cultivator. You just need to find the parts of an old bicycle and connect them together. You can also add batteries, and you will have a homemade battery cultivator.

After all, not always all the work can be done with a large and professional cultivator. Sometimes it is much easier to cultivate the row spacing with a hand cultivator without harming the plants.

As soon as spring comes and the snow melts, everyone begins to wait for warm weather. Many people want to quickly start cultivating their plots to prepare the ground for abundant harvests. And here every summer resident and gardener will need a manual cultivator. After all, if you loosen the soil before planting, then plants will germinate much faster in oxygenated soil. And when working with a cultivator, no special effort is required, and the work is completed much faster. Both adults and children can work with the cultivator that you made yourself. It takes a little time to learn. The main thing is to follow all the instructions when making a hand cultivator.

With a hand cultivator, you not only fluff up the soil before planting, but it also creates convenient harrows for planting seeds. The cultivator can also be used to control weeds when everything has already sprouted. After all, you don’t always want to pull out the grass by hand. And you need to cultivate your garden often.

Any of the hand-made, home-made cultivators are ideal for a dacha. After all, they are quite small in size and very convenient to work with. In one mini cultivator you will find an excellent assistant in the country.

It is not always profitable to buy vegetables and fruits. After all, there is no guarantee that store-bought vegetables are grown in compliance with all technologies. And it’s much more pleasant to eat vegetables that you grew in your own garden or dacha. Moreover, if you do gardening correctly and wisely, it even lifts your mood. Your physical health also improves due to constant physical activity. To make gardening and gardening more convenient, you should buy or make some tools yourself. If you are technically savvy, then there is nothing complicated, you can easily assemble homemade instrument for cultivating land and removing weeds. If you are not particularly knowledgeable, choose a type of manual cultivator with a simple design. If you want to create a complex cultivator yourself, ask your friends to help you. Together with friends it will be much more interesting and fun to create such useful equipment for the household.

Cultivation is loosening the soil, which has already been previously processed, with pruning of weeds and other plants harmful to the crop.

Cultivation helps improve water and air modes soil, thereby increasing its fertility and the possibility of planting complex and demanding plants on it, such as sunflowers.

In the fields, cultivation is carried out using special equipment with necessary equipment, but as for small farms and plots, for their cultivation you can use light motorized equipment, such cultivators as: electric for the garden, mini cultivator, Loplosh or manual cultivators.

If we talk about a homemade manual cultivator for the garden with your own hands, it is quite possible to do it.

It can be made without the use of any special materials or tools, and this can be done in a day or a couple of hours, depending on what exactly the future product will be - simple hedgehog with a handle, or a modification of an old bicycle.

But you will definitely get benefits from such a product. It will be a well-kept garden, where a variety of crops bear fruit equally well, free of weeds, with soil that is easy to cultivate.

Such products operate exclusively with the help of muscular strength, so there will be no costs for electricity and fuel, especially engine maintenance and replacement of parts.

All mechanical parts are extremely reliable due to their simplicity, and if they break down, it will be very easy to replace anything - you just need to make a new part from existing materials.

Also, making homemade hand cultivators requires virtually no experience in design or engineering, since they consist mainly of only a few movable joints.

Necessary materials

In order to be able to independently produce various types of products useful for cultivating the garden, it is advisable to have the most necessary and frequently used materials on hand. Materials that should be in any workshop are, first of all, steel.

The more profiles, strips, rods and steel pipes there are on the farm, the easier it will be to carry out various works, carry out repairs and produce useful equipment.

Also, definitely needed welding machine, with which you can quickly and reliably connect all metal parts.

This can also be done using metal screws, but their scope of application and reliability are not comparable to welding.

The drawings will tell you no more about how to make a manual cultivator with your own hands than understandable words, therefore, in order to follow the assembly order and not miss a few useful tips, you should carefully read all the information below on how to make a manual weeding cultivator with your own hands.

To masters with big amount experience, it may not seem new, but for those who have just started farming, vegetable gardening, such instructions will be more than useful.

Here you will find several options for solving the problem of quick, cheap and effective weeding and cultivating the site, bringing it to ideal condition, with fertile, well-breathing soil, free from weeds and pests.

Weeding cultivator

Weeding between rows is a very important process in gardening. It helps loosen the soil, remove weeds and allows useful plants develop a good root system.

And in order to constantly monitor the cleanliness of the garden and the good condition of the soil, you need a manual cultivator for the garden to weed weeds with your own hands.

The best choice, in terms of inventory model, is perfect manual hedgehog cultivator It’s very easy to do it yourself, and the benefits will be no less than from a walk-behind tractor.

But before you use it, you should remember that this is a device that requires some effort to work properly.

Also, when making such equipment, it is necessary to take into account what is in it, due to its small size, in some parts there will be large stresses - they should be strengthened before these parts break.

The main point of risk is the connection between the handle holder and the rest of the structure.

In order to make the main working part of the product, you will need a steel, non-rusty pipe of small diameter, about 22 centimeters long, a steel rod, approximately the same diameter as the hole in the pipe, and a little longer - 23-24 centimeters, and also strong steel pins or fittings.

Strictly perpendicular to the pipe several pins are welded on along the circumference, in rows with a distance of several centimeters. Just don't make them too long unless you have ground them to a cone shape - then it will be more difficult to work with such a product.

Next, you need to make a bracket from a metal strip in such a way that it has some reserve for bending. Holes are made at its edges, and a mount for the handle is welded to the end, on the other side. Next, you just need to insert the axle, with the hedgehog on it, into the holes and secure it with welding or cotter pins.

The product is now ready for use. If necessary, you can add another bracket to it, directed end down, thus adding loosening of the soil to the weeding.

Tornado

One of the simplest products of agricultural implements is DIY manual tornado cultivator. It is very simple to make, just like a cultivator for a vegetable garden. In order to start making it, you first need to become familiar with how it functions.

“Tornado” is a simple device that consists of three components - a handle, a handle and a working part, which is the main part of this device.

The handle, perpendicular to the cutting, is long and serves as a lever that facilitates the work of “twisting” weeds from the ground, using the lower part of the product - long steel rods twisted in a spiral around the central axis.

The principle of its operation is similar to a corkscrew, but much larger.

With light pressure, the “Tornado” is driven into the ground where the weed is located, scrolls in place, and has no direction of rotation special significance, and rises up.

In this case, the weed, along with the entire root system is removed, “unscrewed” from the ground. You can make this product yourself and it is not at all difficult. There are two ways to make it.

Using spring steel, you will make a completely new, very easy-to-use “Tornado”. To do this, you need a strip of similar steel, with the following dimensions: length 0.5 meters, thickness 0.15 centimeters, width 2 centimeters. Next, you need to make a loop out of it, a downward spiral.

If there is only one loop in the product, then it needs to be given several turns, but if there are several of them, then a large number of turns can complicate the work - they should be short. The loops are welded to the base of the pipe into which the handle will be inserted.

By introducing advanced milking technologies, labor productivity increases, comfort for pets is ensured and production costs are reduced. Milking machines for cows are a significant saving of your financial costs and time.

Motoblocks have long become a common thing for many rural farmers. The Luch walk-behind tractor is easy to operate and quite affordable.

With the help of snow blowers, you can easily clear the area of fallen snow without wasting effort and large quantity time. Here's all about the great Champion snow blower.

The ends of the curved tape need to be sharpened, giving them the shape of a long, stretched cone with a sharp end. Also, you can attach a long perpendicular handle to the handle, similar to the handle of factory models.

Also, "Tornado" can make from old pitchforks. This will require, oddly enough, a pitchfork, a hammer and patience. Using a hammer, you need to give the desired shape to the fork teeth, bending them with gentle blows.

Tornado made from old pitchforks

Work must be carried out simultaneously in three planes, since if you immediately bend the teeth in one direction, it may be difficult to continue working.

Also, in order to make your task easier, you can heat up the metal by welding, but it should not become too soft - the steel that is used for such equipment loses its properties when overheated and can simply break under hammer blows.

For the lever, in this case, you can use a metal or plastic pipe, which is attached using self-tapping screws. The optimal length of such a handle is approximately 50 centimeters.

This length is needed in order to work with any, even heavy soil, and cope with weeds that may have a branched and persistent root.

Flat cutter

Another useful inventory item is a manual cultivator flat cutter It’s quite possible to make it with your own hands, although its design is different from the “Tornado” - it is somewhat more complicated. First of all, you need a bicycle, an old one that no one uses anymore and one bicycle wheel will be ideal.

It should not be too large, since such a wheel is inconvenient to use, it is better to take a medium and small one. Also, the cutting part from a two-handed saw is perfect for the main working part of the flat cutter. Although, if you can find a head from a cultivator, this will be a simpler and more reliable option.

In order to make the frame of the product, you can only take a bicycle fork with an attached wheel, to which you will need to attach handles using welding or bolts. A crossbar is installed between the handles, to which the cultivator head or a flat cutter made from a saw is attached.

Flat cutter

But this option, although easier to manufacture, is still not as reliable as a cultivator made from the main part of the bicycle frame.

In order to get stronger and more reliable equipment, you need to turn the frame over with the rear wheel attached, and weld to it: handles on top, at an angle convenient for you, cultivator knives on the bottom, similar to the previous product. This design will be heavier, more stable and stronger.

Also, this design can be made more universal, adapted to the use of various attachments, by mounting the cultivator with bolts. Such equipment will be much more convenient in work.

In addition, its use is the most productive of all the variations of cultivators presented here - it is extremely simple to use, it moves continuously and almost independently, all you need to do is press your hands slightly, so that the blade penetrates the ground to the required depth.

When carrying out any work in the workshop, it is necessary observe all safety measures. First of all, it is necessary to protect your eyes, especially when working with welding, regardless of its type.

In arc welding, it is not only the intensity of light resulting from the burning of the arc that is dangerous, but also the scale that appears at the site of the frozen weld. Moreover, it can break off spontaneously while the metal is cooling, flying to a great height.

Hitting hot viburnum with a hammer towards you is also a bad idea, since it can get not only into your eyes, but also into exposed skin, behind your collar, and into your hair. Therefore, they must be closed first.

When working with gas welding, heating the metal with it for processing or cutting, it is necessary use gloves and face shields– work is carried out at high temperatures. Also, remember that oxygen creates an explosive mixture when it comes into contact with oil - a spark is not needed to detonate this mixture.

Conclusion

By making your own agricultural implements, you save money, and the amounts are more significant when the product is motorized or has complex parts in its design.

In the same case, if you are making a simple mechanical product, then in addition to the money saved, you also get the opportunity to make it only for yourself, your personal needs.

Therefore, even such a simple product as a hedgehog for inter-row weeding, or a cultivator based on a bicycle will be unique and as convenient as possible, because in this case it will simply take into account all the ideas and nuances that came to your mind during its assembly, or even after her.

DIY cultivator: homemade manual, electric, rotary options

Sometimes it is really more profitable to buy vegetables and fruits in the store. But in the quality of products grown with my own hands, always more confidence. In addition, working on the land increases vitality if done wisely.

But it's heavy physical work not always useful, especially for those who are used to working only in the office. To make spring chores enjoyable and not too burdensome, you need to acquire small-scale mechanization tools.

Modern equipment can, of course, be bought, but it turned out that making, for example, a cultivator with your own hands is quite simple. Make sure of this.

Option #1: manual tornado - death to weeds

Tornado is the name of a manual cultivator, which you can and should make with your own hands. Having such a device, which resembles a curved pitchfork, you can forget about endless battles with weeds.

The teeth of the tool are driven into the ground at an angle, after which the Tornado must be turned and lifted. To do this, you don’t have to exert excessive effort, because instead of a regular handle, the Tornado has a lever.

The Tornado cultivator is attractive because it is quite easy to use and working with it does not require any significant effort

Everyone loves this wonderful root remover, but familiarity with its store price can completely discourage the desire to become its owner. However, there is nothing complicated about this device. The Tornado cultivator can be made independently and even in several different ways.

Spring steel tornado

We will need a steel strip 50 cm long, 1-1.5 mm thick and 2 cm wide. For our purpose, it is best to use spring steel. We bend the tape into a loop and attach it to the wooden handle of the instrument.

The length of the handle is determined depending on the height of the owner: it should be comfortable to work with the tool. You can also make a lever, the same as that of a store-bought root remover. A working steel loop should have a diameter of 20 cm, which is not much less width row spacing.

The edges of the loop are sharpened with a file on both sides.

For weeds - pitchfork to the side

If the Tornado looks like a pitchfork, then why not make a hand-held cultivator with your own hands from this tool familiar to all gardeners? Let's buy a regular fork at a hardware store and give the teeth of this tool the desired bend using a hammer. In general, the tool should resemble a kind of corkscrew. It is important to take your time and proceed carefully.

For the lever you will need a half-meter piece of plastic pipe. We also buy in the store a plastic handle attachment for the handle, which is used for forks or shovels. We cut the tube lengthwise, put it on the handle and secure it with electrical tape so that it does not slip. Now the resulting lever protrudes approximately 25 cm from the handle on both sides.

It is logical to make the fork-shaped part of the Tornado from a fork - a tool well known to all gardeners, which everyone has

An important part for the Tornado cultivator is its upper lever part: thanks to the lever, you can, by applying minimal effort, do hard work

Option #2: flat cutter on a bicycle base

A flat-cut cultivator will help you cope with weeds and make the life of any gardener much easier. Structurally, it is more complicated than Tornado, but not by much.

To create a flat cutter you need:

  • an old bicycle that no one uses anymore for its intended purpose;
  • a head from a cultivator that has become unusable or the working surface of a two-handed saw;
  • drill, grinder, keys, drills, bolts and so on.

A bicycle frame and one wheel will be useful. The cultivator head is attached to the frame.

The cutting part of a two-handed saw, a small plow, or sharp steel rods made independently can be used for the same purpose.

The handles for controlling the mechanism are made of aluminum or steel pipes. A piece of pipe approximately 2.5 cm in diameter will be useful as a cross bridge.

A flat cutter can be made based on an old bicycle, using it as a cutting part work surface two-handed saw, ironically called "Friendship"

There is no particular complexity in the design of this convenient tool no, it can be made if you have the right material at hand

The structure must be rigid, so the nodes are tightened with bolts. A medium-sized wheel should be secured to the frame with locknuts. The result is a homemade cultivator that is very functional and easy to use.

Option #3: disc rotary cultivator

Making a rotary cultivator with your own hands is not at all easy. This requires special skills and good physical preparation. If you have all the listed qualities, you can try to build this tool, which will be much more effective than all the previous ones. With its help, you can not only cultivate, but also harrow the soil, deftly breaking large clods.

The rotary disk cultivator consists of: 1 - disk, 2 - axis. 3 - bushing, 4 - large bracket, 5 - small bracket, 6 - rod, 7 - pipe, 8 - handle

The working parts of this cultivator are convex disks, which must be welded to bushings placed on the axle. The axial ends are secured with cotter pins, which are secured in a large bracket.

After which a hole is cut in the upper part of this bracket. Handles with a crossbar are attached to it. A rod 25 cm long and 24 mm in diameter will have to be welded to a small bracket. A rod of 16 mm diameter is screwed into it.

Part of the rod protrudes above the crossbar.

It is not so easy to give a 4 mm thick disk the desired spherical shape. To do this, you need to be able to deftly handle a hammer. A strong and precise blow to the center of the disc transforms it into a bowl.

This is the work that will require the main physical effort.

Special wing nuts located on the crossbar regulate the angle of inclination of the spherical disks relative to the direction of movement of the cultivator itself.

Option #4: a production meat grinder to help us

All of the above equipment is quite simple. But in your own workshop you can make a homemade electric cultivator. This once again proves that the possibilities of home craftsmen are almost limitless. To implement this idea, you will need an old industrial meat grinder. On its basis, an effective electric gardener’s assistant will be built.

An electric cultivator can be made on the basis of a meat grinder for industrial purposes: you get a fairly powerful unit that will last for several years

Everything is not as difficult as it seems if you have a welding machine and a master who knows how to use it for its intended purpose. Two corners should be attached to the gearbox housing. Bent pipes are welded to the corners, which will be used as handles. Another piece of pipe is welded between the resulting handles - a spacer, which gives the structure the required strength.

The axles for the cultivator wheels will also need to be welded to the corners. The wheels are selected to be of medium size so that they are easy to use and do not sink into the soil.

The main structural part is the shaft. It will have to be turned out of ordinary scrap. The connection is carried out as in the original: in a slot. The meat grinder attachment is chipped off with a sledgehammer, after which a bushing with thick walls made of cast iron remains.

A blank machined from scrap is placed into it, to which lugs in the form of a screw are welded. They are cut from car springs. Other lug material options were used, but these proved to be unviable.

The lugs are located at an angle of 120 degrees. They need to be screwed out as they rotate, then it will be easier for them to enter the ground, and the cultivator itself will be easier to control.

The engine of the device is connected according to the “triangle” circuit, the start is capacitor. For ease of operation, the engine switch is installed on the cultivator handle.

The device will last a long time if you lubricate the interface before starting work. homemade shaft in a cast iron bushing with any used oil.

Take a good look at what the lugs should be and how they should be positioned: the efficiency of the device and its durability depend on this

The quality of tillage depends on the speed of movement of such a cultivator. Fast plowing will be rough, but slow plowing can literally turn the earth into dust.

Option #5: child of a bicycle and a washing machine

Don’t rush to throw away your old bike and used washing machine. These things may also come in handy if you want to make a cultivator with your own hands, spending a minimum of money on it.

Now you know how to make a cultivator yourself. All that remains is to apply your knowledge in practice.

DIY hand cultivators

The dream of any summer resident is to get large harvests with a minimum of physical input. From the world of fantasy? Not at all.

Cultivators greatly facilitate the work of a summer resident, with the help of which you can dig up the soil and fight weeds. However, many refuse to buy them due to the high price of industrial hand cultivators.

In this article we will tell you how you can make hand cultivators yourself from scrap material.

Hand garden cultivators

First, let's define which cultivators are manual and what function they perform.

All cultivators, depending on the type of mechanical device, are divided into manual, gasoline and electric. Manual ones are also called mechanical. The most effective of them are gasoline ones. But mechanical ones are distinguished by their low price and therefore greater availability.

If we consider the operations that cultivators can perform, the following can be identified as the main ones:

  • loosening the soil;
  • cutting furrows of various depths;
  • ridding the area of weeds;
  • harrowing;
  • soil cultivation.

Some types of cultivators can even provide all possible assistance in harvesting.
We'll talk about how to make hand cultivators with your own hands below.

Manual cultivator root remover

Industrial cultivators for weed control are called “Tornado”. They are a lever at the end of which there is a mechanism reminiscent of a fork with curved teeth. When you press (not intensely) on the lever, the forks are screwed into the ground, and when you lift the cultivator by the handle, the weeds, along with the roots, are pulled out of the ground.

We suggest making an analogue of the “Tornado” with your own hands, especially since it is not at all difficult to do. There are even two ways to make this type of cultivator.

  1. Using spring steel.
    In this case, you need to stock up on a spring steel tape of the following sizes: length - 0.5 m, thickness - 0.15 cm, width - 2 cm. A tape of this size is bent in the shape of a loop. A steel loop is attached to a handle, which is used as an ordinary wooden handle for a tool. If desired, you can also build a lever similar to purchased models. The ends of the steel strip must be carefully sharpened, which will make working with the cultivator easier.
  2. Using a pitchfork
    This type of cultivator is similar in appearance to a pitchfork, and therefore you can use this equipment to make a “Tornado”. To do this, take a purchased fork and give the necessary bend to its teeth. A regular hammer will help you deform the fork teeth. It is important to work carefully and monitor the bending angle so that the teeth do not break off and the tool is not damaged.

A piece of plastic tube is used as a lever, which is threaded into the handle of the handle and firmly fixed there with electrical tape. The lever should protrude 20-25 centimeters from both sides of the handle.

Cultivator - flat cutter

This type of hand cultivator has a more complex design, but it is also possible to make it yourself.

To do this, you need to have a bicycle that is no longer able to ride, a cutting surface from a saw (two-handed) or a head from an old, broken cultivator, an angle grinder, screws, a drill, etc.

Of the entire bicycle structure, only a fork and a single wheel are needed.

The head of an old cultivator, or the surface of a saw, or small curved steel rods with a sharp edge, or a small plow is attached to the frame. Here you are free to choose for yourself.

Next, a control lever, which can be made of a durable metal tube of small diameter, must be attached to the frame-wheel-harrow system. The entire structure is given rigidity using a connecting cross member. The cultivator is ready for use.

DIY rotary cultivator

Making this type of cultivator yourself is not at all easy.

Difficulty of manufacturing manual option rotary cultivator consists mainly of arranging disks, which should have a convex shape, and not the usual flat one. Convexity is usually achieved using a regular hammer.
The stages of manufacturing a rotary cultivator are as follows.

First, you need to weld the discs to the bushings mounted on the axle. The ends of the disks must be secured in brackets. Secondly, a protrusion is formed in the largest of the brackets, through which the pipe with the crossbar will subsequently pass. Thirdly, a rod is welded to the smallest of the brackets, into which a rod is screwed, partially protruding above the crossbar.

Do-it-yourself hand cultivator - a variety of designs and materials for manufacturing

To provide good harvest in your garden beds, it’s not enough to plow the ground and sow it. During the growth, and especially the ripening of crops, the land must be constantly cultivated. Hilling is carried out, weeds are removed, the hardened surface is loosened between the rows.

All this can be done with a hoe or shovel. However, labor efficiency increases by an order of magnitude if the soil cultivator is mechanized.

Any owner can make such a device with his own hands. You don't need any special tools, except a welding machine.

I must say that this idea is not new. Many decades ago, when the population of one sixth of the Earth was experiencing a gardening boom, such tools were popular. They were bought at hardware stores and, if possible, made independently.

Let's consider options on how to make a homemade manual cultivator

Main types of tools:

Flat cutter. It is a mechanized version of a regular hoe.

Rotary star. The principle of operation is to alternately cut the soil with flat knife-shaped elements.

Manual hedgehog cultivator. The design is similar to a star, but the ground is pierced not by knives, but by sharp steel rods, similar to porcupine quills.

Tornado. It is a pitchfork with teeth twisted into a small spiral. It cannot be mechanized; it simply needs to be stuck into the ground.

How to make a hand-held cultivator for a summer cottage from scrap materials?

Materials and tools used:

  • Steel strips, pieces of reinforcement, or other metal blanks, depending on the selected model;
  • A wheel with fastening, or a finished frame (for example, from a bicycle);
  • Pen. Can be used metal pipe or a shovel shaft;
  • Welding machine (preferably);
  • Drill, grinder.

Cultivator "Tornado"

It's very easy to make. The base is made from steel pipe. We weld steel rods to the end to form a square.

Then the rods are bent in a screw manner, and the ends are sharpened. You can use a shovel shaft as a handle, or use a bicycle handlebar as a lever. Then it will be easier to perform turning movements.

This cultivator is used to loosen the soil to a great depth, dig up the roots of shrubs and prepare holes for planting trees.

Cultivator flat cutter

The frame is made of square-section corrugated pipe. One welding point at an angle of 30°. We weld a fork for the wheel from a steel strip 3 mm thick to the frame. The type of wheel does not matter; it can be ready-made or homemade iron.

The steering wheel stop consists of two pipes mounted on the frame. With its help, the operator adjusts the immersion depth of the knife.

The horizontal part of the frame serves as an adapter for the cutting attachment. The knife is made of steel strip 3-4 mm thick, the front lower edge is sharpened. The angle of attack can be changed by installing an adjusting screw.

If you have old bicycle parts, the design can be made from them. Large diameter wheels make it easier to control the cultivator and make its movement easier.

The shape of the cutter can be an inverted “U” or “T” shape. Important! When working with a “T” shaped knife, you must strictly follow the row. Otherwise, you can trim the roots of cultivated plants.

A type of flat cutter is a fork-type cultivator. In this design there are several knives, and they are attached to the so-called “fork” - a structure made of specially bent steel rods.

Drawings of such devices are found in gardening magazines USSR times.

The main advantage of such an assistant is ease of movement. Both a fragile girl and a child can cope with it. Loosening of the soil occurs very efficiently, but the roots of weed plants are practically not cut off.

You can choose what is more important – deep loosening or clearing the area of weeds.

Hand plow

Despite the name, the device is not a classic plow. To plow virgin soil, two human forces are not enough. This is a typical heavy cultivator. The design is similar to a regular flat cutter, but with the addition of a traction handle.

The second operator takes hold of it and drags the plow behind him like a horse. The first worker controls the direction and depth of plowing. It is impossible to use it alone.

Rotary sprocket
The design is quite simple to manufacture. It is necessary to make several identical stars - knives, and string them at a certain interval on the axle.

Knives can be straight or curved in different directions. After passing through the stars, you can immediately trim the roots with a flat cutter. For this purpose, a combined structure is made, as in the illustration.

Since the rotors - stars act as support wheels - an additional axle is not needed. A physically trained person can handle such a cultivator; the movement of the device is quite heavy.

If instead of rotors - stars, you install spherical disks - you will get a hiller.

Cultivator type "Hedgehogs"

The base is a durable fork made of steel strip. On the working side there is an axis for attachments. The nozzles are made from sections of pipe with welded pins - needles with sharply sharpened tips (hence the name - “hedgehogs”).

Loosening occurs by piercing the top layer of soil and lightly shaking the surface. The weed roots remain in place. The main advantage of the tool is its amazing ease of movement. The earth is loosened almost effortlessly.

Similar to the previous design, the rear part of the frame can be equipped with a flat cutter, which will not give rest to the weeds in the row-spacing.

Either a shovel shaft or the same bicycle handlebar is used as a handle.

Advice! The rotary cultivator, or “hedgehogs,” can be used both in front of you and behind the operator.

In the first case, you drive working attachment with its own weight, the work goes on with effort. The second option requires loading (weighting) the working part. However, it is easier to work this way, despite the extra weight.

We figured out how to make a cultivator yourself, and what types of them are the most popular. Do not neglect the advice of your parents - their generation is familiar with this type of instrument firsthand!

Everything is! Everything is. And I bought carrot and cabbage seeds, and found a plot of 6 acres. There is a desire to grow your own agricultural products! Even health, while there is! All that remains is to plant and care for the seedlings. But the land for the beds is not prepared. Need to dig up. Use a shovel for a long time - I asked my neighbor. He turned up layers of earth with a walk-behind tractor and left. And what to do now with these even rows of hillocks that were left after the plow? You can't really break them up with a rake. Eureka! You need your own mini tractor. Or can you get by with a cultivator?!

Beginning summer residents find themselves in roughly these situations. But in order not to waste your energy, you must first “understand the topic.”

Homemade cultivator: manual, tornado, mechanical

The soil must be ready for planting all plants. This means it needs to be loosened, weeds removed, the necessary fertilizers applied, acidity checked and, if necessary, normalize it .

Why do you need to loosen?

It is clear that we cannot do without this. But how to do this with the least physical effort? You can buy a mini tractor or walk-behind tractor. And in order to do without material costs, energy costs. This is what cultivators are for. These are agricultural implements or mechanized units with various working parts (claws, discs, hedgehogs). The type, size, and operating principle of cultivators depend on the area of application. The design of some options is very simple. Therefore, lovers of homemade products often ask the question: “how to make a cultivator with your own hands.” It's doable, but first we need to figure it out how they work and what tasks they perform.

What can you do with a cultivator?

  • Produce pre-sowing treatment plot. These are steam cultivators.
  • Row-crop. He will cultivate the soil inside the rows.
  • There are universal units for continuous and inter-row cultivation.
  • Specialized, developed for the characteristics of growing individual plant crops.
  • Cultivators are feeders. They simultaneously loosen the soil between the rows and apply fertilizers to nourish the plants.

Principle of operation based on the movement of scraping or rotating working elements through the soil. These are curved rods of various shapes, paws, sharpened plates, concave disks often with slots, disk hedgehogs.

What types of cultivators are there?

Manual. They can be operated with one hand. Serve for processing small beds or hard-to-reach places. The working elements are made in the form of curved claws up to 15 cm long. Another variety is mini-discs with slots or hedgehogs. These elements rotate on an axis, which is rigidly fixed in the fork. Homemade cultivator of this type easy to make.

How to make it?

The process of making a hand-held cultivator with your own hands will take few hours. To do this you will need:

  1. Sheet metal 3-3.5 mm thick. It will be easier to cook
  2. Four “closed” bearings (for example, No. 202). They are sometimes used in the bottom bracket of road bicycles.
  3. Metal axle matching the diameter of the bearings. Which will be tightly seated on it.
  4. A strip of metal 5mm thick, for making a fork
  5. A piece of metal tube. Inner diameter 15 - 25 mm. Depends on the size of the future cultivator. 100-200 mm long.
  6. Wooden handle. Length from 350mm to 1000mm.
  7. Tools: Drill, drill with a diameter the same as the axle, angle grinder, welding machine.

Sequencing

  • It is necessary to cut 4 metal discs with a grinder. Diameter from 100 to 200mm. This variation in size is due to the fact that each tiller has his own ambitions and size of the beds. Make radial cuts to a depth equal to ¼ of the radius. This can also be done with a grinder cutting wheel.
  • In the center of each disk, use a drill to make holes with a diameter equal to the mounting diameter of the bearings.
  • Bend the discs so that they take a spherical shape. To do this, place the disc on a wooden block made of soft wood. For example, linden, raw aspen, poplar. You can use pine. Then use a hammer to give the disk a concave shape.
  • Then we weld bearings to the centers of each disk and place the disks on the axle at the same distance. For reliability, they can also be “grabbed” in several places by welding. Just be careful so as not to damage the bearing.
  • We bend the metal strip into the letter “P”. From the side of the crossbar, in the center, we weld a tube for the handle. And the axle with disks is welded to the “legs” of the letter.
  • All! The homemade disc cultivator is ready. Attach a pen and enjoy your work.

Tornado

Another type of hand ripper gets its name from its shape. Making a tornado cultivator with your own hands is as easy as making a disk cultivator. It has several varieties, depending on the work item. These can be pointed, curved steel rods. Or curved plates, which are also sharpened along the plane.

What is required to make it?

  • Four metal strips measuring 2.5mm x 20mm x 230mm. Or 4 steel rods with a diameter of 8mm.
  • Metal tube.
  • Wooden handle for making a handle.
  • Welding machine, emery, grinder.
  • A few hours of free time.

How to do?

  • Sharpen rods or strips with sandpaper
  • Give them the shape of part of an elongated spiral.
  • Weld it to a piece of pipe 20cm long.
  • Weld a tee from the same pipe.
  • Connect the working part to the tee with a wooden handle.
  • Insert handles from the same cutting into the tee on both sides.

There are no rigid dimensions for the height and length of the handles of the product, since for each person they are individual. They depend on the height of the summer resident, the length of his arms, the width of his shoulders and his manner of working.

There are also mechanical cultivators. These are more powerful cars. They do more work, better quality and faster. They are driven by electric motors or motors internal combustion. Do-it-yourself high-quality motor cultivator quite difficult to make. This requires accurate calculations, drawing, fitting of parts, experimentation and good tools. If you do not have sufficient skills, then it is better to purchase a factory-made walk-behind tractor or cultivator. They can significantly reduce the physical effort when processing the area. These machines are additionally equipped with a weeder, plow, discs, and flat cutters.

However, there is also a “golden mean”. To cultivate the soil, you can make a cultivator from parts old bicycle. When working with it, only muscular strength is required.

Raw material

  • Rear and front fork of a bicycle.
  • The medium diameter wheel is from him. The wider the better.
  • Steering wheel.
  • Bicycle frame parts.
  • "Bulgarian", welding machine.

I don’t provide an exact drawing, since everyone will still have their own dimensions of the original parts. And for those who like to do everything with their own hands, main value– this is an idea.

So, you need to fix the wheel on two forks at once. We combine their lugs and insert the wheel axle. We connect the opposite ends of the forks with part of the frame. The result is a triangle with a wheel in one corner. We attach the steering wheel to the other corner using the remaining frame parts. The third corner is used for attaching “attachments”. This work items cultivator You can make a fork with discs or weld a strip with curved legs. A flat cutter or even a small plow will work well.

Another option for a homemade electric cultivator. This, of course, is not a walk-behind tractor or a mini-tractor, but it does not require large expenses. For its manufacture, an electric motor from a meat grinder is used, mounted on a welded frame made of corners. The gearbox is selected. Through it, rotation is transmitted to the working mechanism of the baking powder.

Thus, it is clear that the cultivator in the country house is irreplaceable, functional and varied in design. Without a walk-behind tractor, a farmer is like without hands. But who doesn't need to process large area It’s quite possible to make an electric cultivator with your own hands or a small manual one. Anyone can do this. We're ready to start!

Making a manual cultivator with your own hands is quite simple - it does not require a lot of time, no specific skills, or rarely available mechanical components. Pluses homemade design weight: during operation there is no need for fuel or electricity, since it is driven by physical force, and if it breaks (which happens extremely rarely), repairing it will not be difficult. The materials required for the home production of a hand-held cultivator will probably be found in every workshop or even garage (during assembly you will need a welding machine and, mainly, steel elements), but the garden will always be well-groomed with a minimum of effort.

There are three types of cultivator based on the operating characteristics:

  • gasoline;
  • electrical;
  • driven by physical force (it is this type of cultivator that is easiest to make with your own hands).

Cultivator Tornado

Depending on the functions performed and design features, there are rotary cultivators, rippers and even miniature hand cultivators for indoor plants.

Star/rotary cultivator

This unit has the following design: star-shaped disks (which is why it is also called a disk cultivator) are put on a metal shaft, which, when the shaft is rotated, are pierced into the ground. The consequence is loosening the soil and uprooting harmful weeds (that is, it performs a double function). The scope of operation of a rotary cultivator is extensive - it can be useful in cultivating lawns or flower beds, potato beds or the root zone of young trees.

Ripper

A classic example of a cultivator-ripper is the Tornado. The device is surprisingly simple: a working part in the form of spiral-shaped pointed teeth is attached to a handle with a long perpendicular hand. The structure is put into operation by turning the handle, thanks to which the teeth stick into the ground and are removed, loosening it. The cultivator can even handle soil that is compacted or overgrown with weeds.. Unlike the star cultivator, it is used primarily for processing small problem areas. Compared to other designs of this type, making a manual soil cultivator with your own hands is the easiest.

Root remover

Both a Tornado-type cultivator and a hedgehog cultivator can be used as a root remover. The working part of the hedgehog is represented by steel rods rotating when moving on an axis. This part is attached to the handle (with or without a perpendicular hand attached). Like the Tornado, the hedgehog is used not only for extracting weed roots, but also for inter-row loosening, which is accompanied by the compact dimensions of the working part.

Potato digger

The domestic market for agricultural implements offers a lot of potato diggers that are structurally different (mainly vibrating, working like a walk-behind tractor attachment). A special niche is occupied by manual potato diggers, used for moderately spacious areas. The work is carried out thanks to two axes with teeth (one of which is motionless and serves to establish support, and the other, when pressed, turns out intact tubers). You can make such a simple design yourself using a pitchfork.

Tooth cultivator

For indoor plants

The cultivator for indoor plants is a small trident with pointed curved teeth. You can easily make this device yourself using strong wire. The handle can be made from decorative materials or decorate to suit your taste.

How to make a homemade hand cultivator

Absolutely anyone can make a “homemade product”: you don’t need any special skills or tools for this. However, each design has its own characteristics that must be taken into account during assembly.

Flat cutter

To make a flat cutter, you will need a professional pipe (preferably with a square cross-section), a steel strip (0.3 cm thick), and a wheel (ready-made bicycle or specially made). The assembly diagram is as follows:

  • we make a fork from a steel strip, attach a wheel to the fork;
  • we make a V-shaped frame from corrugated pipe (welding angle – 300);
  • We weld the fork to the frame and the handles on top. To make it easier to set the structure in motion, a jumper is welded between the handles (in the upper part).

A knife made from the tip of a double-sided saw or a steel strip (3-4 mm) is attached to the wheel. The angle of the knife can be varied by placing it on the adjusting screw. Particularly popular are flat cutters whose base is made from a bicycle fork or frame.

"Tornado"

A manual cultivator of the “Tornado” type is a simple unit, which is equipped with a handle, a handle perpendicular to it and a working part. In appearance and principle of operation, it resembles a large corkscrew: it is screwed into the soil and reliably removes weeds with their root system. You can make such a simple device in two ways: using a steel strip or using an old fork.

A “Tornado” of steel tape is made according to the following instructions:

  • We take a metal pipe with a diameter corresponding to the handle that will be inserted into it;
  • we give pieces of springy steel tape (length up to half a meter, thickness - 0.15 cm, width up to 2 cm) a spiral shape of a pair of turns, the ends of the turns need to be sharpened;
  • Using welding, we attach the spirals to the pipe.

It is also advisable to make the handle metal so that you can weld the handle (about 0.5 m long) without any problems, or use durable plastic.

The pitchfork tornado is even easier to perform: Use a hammer to give the teeth a spiral shape. Heating the metal by welding will simplify the work. The cutting is made in the same way.

Making a star cultivator

For this design, the required number (depending on the desired width of the working part) of identical knives in the form of stars is made. You can assemble the cultivator according to the following scheme:

  • knives are welded to the axle at intervals of 5-7 cm;
  • the axis is attached to the metal fork in such a way that its free rotation is possible (in the arms of the fork you need to drill holes into which a rod with knives already on is inserted, bend the rod at both ends);
  • the fork is welded to the pipe to which the handle will be attached.

The diameter of the stars can vary depending on the intensity of weeding or loosening, as well as the type of soil. The most effective modification is considered to be one in which a flat cutter is attached to the back of the fork with knives (a sharp steel strip is bent into a triangle and attached at the joint to the pipe). If you use smooth disks instead of sprockets, you will have a hiller.

Bicycle cultivator

An unnecessary bicycle is the optimal basis for making a manual cultivator with your own hands. There are two options, differing in complexity: using a bicycle fork with a wheel or using a frame base.

To complete the first option, you will need:

  • a bicycle fork with a non-removed wheel (it is best to use a children’s bicycle, since a cultivator with a large wheel is not so comfortable to use);
  • flat cutter (you can use the cutting part of a two-handed saw or use a ready-made cultivator head);
  • handles (it is advisable to use metal ones).

Two handles must be attached to a bicycle fork with a wheel. A cross member is attached between the handles (by welding or bolts). A cultivator head lying around or a flat cutter made from a saw blade is welded to the crossbar.

For the second option (based on a bicycle frame), you will need a bicycle frame with a rear wheel. The assembly instructions are as follows:

  • turn the frame over without removing the rear wheel;
  • We attach (by welding) the handles on top, and a flat cutter on the bottom.

This option has advantages: firstly, it is more reliable, and secondly, you can use any attachment if you attach it with bolts.

A homemade manual cultivator will become an indispensable assistant in any agricultural activity. Knowing how to make a homemade cultivator, you can save significantly (of course, if we are not talking about hectares of cultivated soil) both on fuel and on repairs. You can show your imagination and modify the design in every possible way or initially make it “for yourself” - with a comfortable tilt of the handles, the necessary attachments, and a suitable size. There are no limits to design improvement.
