Buryats have been living from time immemorial. These are representatives of the Mongolian race, representing one of the strongholds of traditional Buddhist and shamanic culture in our state. Traditional Buryat names, which we will talk about in the article, also very vividly reflect this.

About Buryat names

To begin with, the traditional Buryat onomasticon experienced a very strong influence of the Tibetan, and through the Tibetan and Indian cultures. This happened more than three hundred years ago, thanks to the preaching of Buddhism. That is why Buryat names contain in their list a huge variety of Sanskrit and Tibetan forms and roots. However, they have so organically come into use that today they are not perceived as foreign language.

Traditional Buryat names are most often complex, consisting of two roots. At the same time, religious significance is very, very strongly manifested in them. In addition, many of them do not differ in genus - this feature began to penetrate more and more into the onomasticon of the Buryats under the influence of Russification. Traditionally, many Buryat names were equally suitable for both girls and boys.

Over time, foreign-language names began to prevail, and only during the years of Soviet power, when religious persecutions began, did the ancient Buryat names that did not have a vivid religious meaning begin to come to the fore. Most often they are associated with plants (for example, Sesegma - "flower") or abstract qualities, concepts (Jargal - "happiness"). Sometimes names are associated with colors and shades (for example, Ulaan Baatar - "red hero"). Another feature of this onomasticon is that the Buryats, especially in the past, had a popular tradition of giving a person a double name.

Further Russification led to the fact that many original forms acquired a Slavic sound. This process is especially typical for the second half of the last century. At present, the Buryats mostly use the original Buryat female names, as well as the original male names. However, both are now divided by gender, are most often monosyllabic and often have a Russified form of pronunciation.

The percentage of Tibetan and Sanskrit names, although an order of magnitude less, is still quite high among the Buryat population. Especially in recent years, as more and more people are turning to their cultural and religious traditions, the Buddhist influence on the onomasticon begins to increase. Many parents do not even choose a name themselves, but ask for a name to be given to a cult servant - a lama, who determines the child's name based on certain astrological premises.

Below we give a list of some Buryat names. It will contain both Buryat names of boys and girls' names. Of course, this is not a complete list, a simple listing of which without explanation would take an entire book. We will restrict ourselves to the most beautiful and colorful forms.

Why men's and women's lists of names (names) have such a limited volume is explained simply: the age of the considered group of persons is 25-65 years old, they were born in 1950-1990, that is, in the Soviet period, when uniformity was firmly imposed in all spheres of life, and it wasn't very common to stand out (including baby names). Everyone followed unspoken standards and rules, including young parents. And especially the city dwellers.

For more than three hundred years, the names borrowed from the Tibetan and Sanskrit languages have become so firmly and organically included in the lexical composition of the Buryat language that they are no longer recognized as foreign languages and are perceived as Buryat proper.

Until 1936, the composition of Buryat names was represented by traditional Tibetan and Sanskrit. For example, most residents of the older generation have complex or dual names: Garmazhap "protected by a star", Dansaran-Geleg "saint, sage, happiness", Dashi-Dorzho "happy diamond", Dimid-Tsyren "epithet of Buddha", Dashi-Dondog "creative happiness ", Tsyren-Zhalma" an epithet of the goddess of Mind ", which testifies to the influence of religious beliefs. It should be noted that due to grammatical traditions, there was no such thing as a gender indicator between names. Both girls and boys were named after Buda-Khanda, Tsybik-Dorzho, Radna.

1936-1940 characterized as a time of repression, destruction of churches and datsans, persecution of the ministers of religion. During this period, the first native Buryat names appeared: Bato-Zhargal "strong happiness", Zorigto "brave, brave", Sesegma "flower".

It should be noted that there are also color names, although isolated cases are presented: Ulaan-Tuyaa "red ray", Ulaan Seseg "red flower", Ulaan Baatar "red hero".

Meanwhile, the most common are names of Tibetan origin: Balzhid, Danzan, Dasha-Nima, Dulma, Tsybik-Dorzho, Tsyrelma, Tsyren-Khanda, etc.

The period from 1946 to 1970 characterized by an abundance of double names borrowed from the Tibetan and Sanskrit languages: Badma-Jap "protected by a lotus", Radnazhap "precious shelter", Tsyden-Damba "holy, strong life", Genin-Dorzho "diamond friend", Tsyren-Khanda "walking along sky, long life "and so on.

The names of the Atsagat people are also replenished with the Buryat names Bator "hero", Bato "strong, strong", Bayarma "joy", Erdem "knowledge", Tuyana "ray", Erzhena "mother of pearl", Erdeni "jewel", Bulad "steel", Tumen " ten thousand". A large number of names appear on a Slavonic basis, the choice of which, first of all, paid attention to the euphony and ease of pronunciation.

The appearance of foreign names among the Buryats indicates that they follow fashion. In the 60s and 70s, there was a fascination with Western European fashion and names. This tendency testifies to the active introduction of the Buryats not only to the culture of the Russian, but also to other peoples.

The last decade of the last century was marked by major social transformations, the return to traditional spiritual values and the conversion of the Buryats to their original Buryat names. It can be noted that a peculiar tradition of naming has developed: the head of the family asks to determine the name of the child from the lama, who, according to the stars, determines the most favorable and suitable name.

Names appear, emphasizing the difference by sex, defining the category of the genus. There is a suffix way of forming names (-а; -maa;): Balzhid - Balzhida, Suren - Surena, Salmeg - Salmega. A new model of education appears from male and female names that have consonant endings. But still the model with the Tibetan element - maa remains productive: Bair - Bairma, Zhargal - Zhargalma, Soel - Soelma.

It seems that the names of Adis from adis "blessing", Amarsana from the greeting amar sayin "well-meaning", as well as the name of the national hero of western Mongolia, Altan from altan "gold", Saran from saran "moon", Bair, Dulsan are among the newfangled ones. "Liberator, immortal." These names are formed by attaching the derivational suffix -а to the stem, as an indicator of the female name.

For every people, the magical function of the name, which affects the fate of the betrothed, is considered an important enough feature. For example, Buddhists claim that the bearer of the name Geser, an epic hero of remarkable power of divine origin, possessed a powerful energy that was transmitted to his name. The name Geser can be worn by a physically and spiritually strong person, therefore this name is characterized as "difficult", and parents rarely call their children that name. Among the Buryats, there are quite a few people with two names, for example, Geser and Zhambal, Bayaskhalan and Shoyzhonima, Darima and Dolgorma, where the former are official names that did not fit the subject for one reason or another and were named differently. Consequently, the choice of a name is an extremely responsible and important step of a person. So, lamas are not advised to give children the names of early deceased or perished relatives.

Thus, the Buryat name-list has been formed since the penetration of Buddhism into Russia and since then has undergone few changes. These are mainly borrowings from the Tibetan-Sanskrit language. Buryat names proper appeared in the 30s, and now they occupy a leading place.

I'm ready to help you, - said the hunter.
“Then let’s go to the valley where the battle will take place,” said the variegated serpent.
They came to a wide valley.
“Our fight will be long,” said the variegated serpent. - We will rise to the sky three times and descend to the ground three times. When we rise for the fourth time, my enemy will overcome me, take over; when we go down, he will be at the top, and I will be at the bottom. At this time, do not yawn: I will turn his yellow head towards you, and you shoot his only eye. This eye is in his forehead, in the very middle of his forehead. Now hide in this pit, soon the yellow-winged serpent will rush from the sky right at me.
The hunter hid in a hole.
Soon a yellow-winged serpent rushed from the sky. The battle began. The snakes, grappling, rose three times to the sky, three times sank to the ground. The forces were equal. But then they ascended to the sky for the fourth time, and the yellow-winged serpent overpowered the variegated one. When they descended, the yellow-winged was at the top, and the variegated at the bottom. But here the motley-winged one quickly turned the head of his enemy to the hunter. A well-aimed shooter was just waiting for that. The string of his bow was drawn. A blink was enough for him to shoot an arrow and pierce the yellow eye of the yellow-winged serpent. And then a yellow poisonous fog fell to the ground, from which all the trees in the forest dried up, and all the animals died. The hunter was saved by a variegated serpent. He covered his friend with mighty dense wings and kept him under them for three days and three nights, until the yellow poisonous fog dissipated.
And when the sun shone again, the variegated serpent said:
- We have defeated a formidable enemy. Thank you, hunter. The yellow-winged serpent did a lot of harm. Every day he swallowed three beasts and devoured fire serpents, my subjects. If not for you, he would have killed me and devoured all the fire serpents. Come visit me. You will see my palace, my subjects, my old parents.
The hunter agreed, and he and the serpent went down into a deep pit, and from there, along an underground passage, they found themselves in a palace sparkling with gold and precious stones. On the floor lay fiery serpents, coiled into rings. One hall was followed by another, even richer. And so they came to the largest hall. In it, near the hearth, sat two old variegated snakes.
“These are my parents,” said the snake. The hunter greeted them.
“This hunter saved me and my entire khanate,” said the snake. “He killed our longtime enemy.
“Thank you,” said the snake's old parents. - For this you will receive a reward. If you want, we will give you gold and precious stones, as much as you can carry. If you want, we will teach seven and ten languages, so that you can understand the conversations of birds, animals and fish. Take your pick!
“Teach me seventy languages,” said the hunter.
- Take better gold and jewelry, - said the old parents of the snake. “Life is not easy for someone who knows seventy languages.
“No, I don’t want gold, teach the languages,” the hunter asked.
“Well, be it your way,” said the old motley-winged serpent. - From now on you know seventy languages, from now on you hear the conversations of birds, fish and animals. But this is a secret. You must keep it from people. If you let it out, you will die on the same day.
The hunter left the khanate of the variegated serpent and went home. He walks through the forest and rejoices: after all, he understands everything that animals and birds say among themselves. A hunter came out of the forest. Here is the yurt. "I'll go into it," he thinks. And the dog barks:
- Don't come in here. Although this is a rich yurt, our owner is stingy. Here you will not only be given meat - they will not give you milk.
The hunter moved on. A dog barks near another yurt:
- Come here, traveler. Even though this is a poor man's yurt, but our master is kind, he will treat you. We have only one cow, but the owner will give you milk, we have only one black ram, but the owner will prick the last ram for the guest.
The hunter entered the poor man's yurt. The owner greeted him politely and sat him down in a place of honor. The host's wife served the guest a bowl of milk. The poor man invited the hunter to spend the night, and in the evening he killed a black ram for him. As they ate, the dog whined:
- Good guest, drop the lamb shoulder, I will grab it and run out, the owner will not be angry with you.
The hunter dropped his shovel. The dog grabbed her and ran away. And then she barked:
- The good guest treated me to a tasty scoop. I will not sleep all night, I will guard the yurt.
The wolves came at night. We stopped near the poor man's yurt and howl:
- Now we will pull up the horse!
- My master has only one horse, you can't eat it. If you come closer, I will make a loud barking. The owner will wake up, his guest-hunter will wake up, and then you will be in trouble. Better go there, to the rich man, pick up his fat gray mare, he has a lot of horses, and his dogs are hungry, they won't bark at you.
